Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave

Hill, L. C., & Collier, B. (2010). Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave. New York: Little, Brown and Company.

LS5360: Coretta Scott King

First, it's embarrassing to have such a lousy cover picture for such a spectacular book.  I just had a problem finding on the 'net a good one which was big enough to post.  Should have taken a picture of the cover myself!

Wow – this book’s illustrations are breathtaking and engaging.  By using the style of realism – or perhaps expressionism - to create these illustrations, readers truly feel like they are watching the whole process of creating pottery.  The illustrations are colorful and expressive and readers not only see Dave’s focus and his joy, but they feel it through the painterly media of watercolors. Just gorgeous.  The story is also gorgeous, with the power of the human spirit, despite adversity (here, slavery) as it’s central theme.
