Devil and the Deep: Ceruleans IV

Tayte, M. (2015). Devil and the Deep: Ceruleans IV. Heaven Afire Publishing.

YA / Supernatural / Romance

I gave this book 5 out of 5 Stars

Author's Blurb: STORM CLOUDS ARE GATHERING, AND THEY WILL RAIN BLOOD.
Scarlett is living her happy-ever-after, back in the real world. Only the ‘happy’ part is proving problematic.

For starters, there’s the isolation. Being a Cerulean among humans is fraught with risk, so her time with people can only be fleeting. Which means being with Luke but not being with Luke.

Then there’s her Cerulean light, her power over life and death. Less awesome talent, as it turns out, and more overwhelming responsibility. And it comes with rules – rules that are increasingly difficult to obey.

But what’s really pushing Scarlett to the precipice is something much bigger than herself, than her life in the cove. A force to be reckoned with:
Blood.

When long-buried truths are exposed, will Scarlett keep her head above water – or will she drown in the blood-dimmed tide that is unleashed?
======================================================
Just when it seems Scarlett has made peace with the choices she's made for her life as a Cerulean, she begins to see time and again that what she believed as truths were lies. As Scarlett's very foundations seem to be crumbling and her decision to be with Luke is draining her energy, will Scarlett have the strength to save herself from new temptations and promising rewards?

As the fourth book in a series of five, Devil and the Deep begins where Wild Blue Yonder ended, and Scarlett's and Luke's relationship has taken yet another twist. The beginning of the book moves slowly but then just as Scarlett becomes restless with her life, the book's pace really picks up and becomes packed with action, revelations, and secrets revealed. Scarlett finds out that there is much more to being a Cerulean than she has been told and that breaking some rules results in very real and physical consequences. There are plot twists and turns, mostly revolving around a new character who is introduced (but whom sharp readers will anticipate due to some excellent foreshadowing in books past and present).

Author Megan Tayte continues to write beautifully descriptive scenes painting not only landscapes and settings but also people and their temperaments. Readers still enjoy a solid story line that connects its pieces perfectly. Yes, there are still questions to be answered, (for me one in particular from book two), but I haven't given up hope that they'll be answered. Tayte even promises full disclosure in the final book, in an author's note at the end of Devil and the Deep! There were a few minor typos, which surprised me given they are first I've noticed in the series -- an impressive feat. The author is British, so American readers will notice and enjoy some differences in punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary. (I now understand the difference between a "mate" and a "bloke," thank you very much.)

The main character of this book, Scarlett, is approaching twenty years old by the time we're at the end of book four, and she's in a relationship and living with a slightly older guy. The books have these and other young adults having consensual sex (not descriptive and book four has less described/more implied than prior books) and alcohol and partying is a pretty regular part of life. So it's realistic! As such, I'd recommend it for mature or older young adults -- or anyone who enjoys/remembers young love and being passionate about life and love.

Thank you to the author for inviting me to be a part of the Release Party and for giving me an eBook in exchange for my honest review -- the only kind I give.  After my frenzied reading of the last three books, back to back, I am not sure how I will wait for the fifth book to come out. This series OWNS me.

About Author Megan Tayte: Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. ‘Write, Megan,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Megan is a professional writer and published author by day, and an indie novelist by night. Her fiction – young adult romance with soul – recently earned her the SPR’s Independent Woman Author of the Year award.

Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in Robin Hood's county, Nottinghamshire. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a palaeontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. When she's not writing, you'll find her walking someplace green, reading by the fire, or creating carnage in the kitchen as she pursues her impossible dream: of baking something edible.
