TRIBUTE TO MOTHERS
GUEST POST by LOUIS SWARTZ
Those whom I have known who have taken on
this job are a singular lot. They possess a unique and constant love. This may
be the love that holds our human world together. It contains no conditions or
limitations.
She mends, she heals, she binds us up when
we are broken. She is a willing ear, provides necessary succor. She lies beside
us during the scary nights, a soothing presence who softens the edges of our
childhood life.
She is a near ultimate in thereness.
Mothers exemplify the native kindness inherent to humankind.
Making Dinner
Watching from my high chair
In the pre – dinner dusk,
Utterly aware and concentrating.
Mother in apron, deft hands shelling peas,
Waning light through kitchen window.
In high chair straining to understand.
Daddy left a while ago
And daddy never came back.
Mommy told me he went to God.
Will Mommy go there too?
And where is it they would go?
Would I go there as well?
No, Mommy won’t go there.
Mommy is forever and always.
Dinner roast nearly done,
Wonderful smell warms my hungry tummy.
Mommy chopping salad on wooden block
Smiles mother’s smile at me,
How could Mommy be other than forever?

HALL WAYS REVIEW: With the optional background music
of Mozart's 12 Variations of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and the
stunning artwork by Diane Woods, readers will thoroughly enjoy this excerpt of
selected poems honoring mothers and grandmothers and the children they
nurture.
In For Mothers, Grandmothers and Children, Mr.
Swartz has shared his own reflections on the value of mothering as well as a
selection of eight poems (including the Making Dinner above) from his
full book of poetry, Constructed of Magic
And other Poems on the Immortality of the Human Spirit. The poems
touch on the wonder of watching and learning from each other -- whether it's a
mother learning from a child or a child learning from his grandmother. Ranging
from contemporary to legendary, each poem gives a memorable snapshot of moments
in time, and Diane Woods's illustrations are a lovely complement.
As was the case in Swartz's Valentine's Day eBook, the sampling of poems included in For
Mothers, Grandmothers and Children entices readers to want more.
Fortunately, Swartz's complete book of poems is available at a discount for
anyone who downloads the eBook.
Thank you to the publisher and author for providing me an
eBook copy in exchange for my honest opinion -- the only kind I give.
