How has being a Texan influenced your writing?
I'm afraid I'm
not a native Texan. I was born and raised in California, but in 1989 I came to
Texas to attend Abilene Christian University. I met my husband, married, and by
the time graduation came around, I was so enamored with Texas, I didn't want to
leave. So we stayed and are now raising 3 native Texans.
You might be
able to pick up on my love for this land that has been home to me for the past
17 years when you read my books because they are all set in the Lone Star
State. The Texas mystique is the perfect backdrop for western romance, and
since the state is so large and varied, I have my choice of settings from
desert, to forest, to gulf coast, to prairie. And I've used them all.
Why did you choose to write in your particular genre?
Ever since I
was a little girl, I've loved to read. And the stories that most captivated me
were those set in the past. Little House
on the Prairie and Anne of Green
Gables to name a few. As I grew older, I fell in love with historical
romance. There is just something about a historical story that enhances the
fairy tale element for me. Maybe it's the big dresses, or the strong, rugged
heroes, or the escape into a time period not my own. By the time I was a young
adult, I read historical fiction to the exclusion of all other genres. So when
I decided to try my hand at writing, there was no debate over what genre to
write. My path was clear. Write what you love. And what I love is historical romance.
How does your book relate to your spiritual practice
or other life path?
I write
historical romance for the Christian market, so my faith greatly impacts my
writing. My stories center around mature Christian characters who struggle with
the same issues we face today. Trusting God when trouble comes. Surrendering
control. Forgiving those who have wronged us or who fail to live up to our
expectations. Developing faith that is not just for outward appearance, but
that penetrates the heart. Waiting on God's timing instead of our own.
In order to
make my characters real, I give them issues that I, myself, struggle with. Yet
these issues are not front and center in the story. They are woven into the
fiber of the players, so that as they deal with villains, natural disasters,
mysteries, and – oh, yes – falling in love, they develop spiritually just as we
all do as we go through the adventures of our own lives.
Where
is one place you want to visit that you haven't been before?
Being a romantic sap with a love of
all thing fairy tale, I would love to visit the castes of Bavarian Germany,
especially Neuschwanstein Castle. Set high in the mountains, with towering
spires overlooking forests, what could be more perfect for a romance writer?
