In her kitchen at the Red Door Inn, executive chef Caden Holt is calm, collected, and competent. But when her boss asks her to show off their beautiful island to impress a visiting travel writer and save the inn, Caden is forced to face a world much bigger than her kitchen—and a man who makes her wish she was beautiful.

Journalist Adam Jacobs is on a forced sabbatical on Prince Edward Island. He’s also on assignment to uncover a story. Instead he’s falling in love with the island’s red shores and Caden’s sweets.

When Caden discovers Adam isn’t who she thought he was, she realizes that the article he’s writing could do more than ruin the inn’s chances for survival—it might also break her heart.

Readers will discover hope for the hurting, joy for the broken, and romance for the lonely at the enchanting Red Door Inn.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
I’m a hopeless romantic, and I can’t imagine writing a book that doesn’t feature a love story. I can’t get enough of characters who overcome their fears and find hope for their futures. My most recent books are part of the Prince Edward Island Dreams series, and I fell in love with the tiny island in the Canadian Maritimes, which is most well known as the home of Anne of Green Gables, the first time I stepped onto it. The characters on the island—both the real and fictional ones—have filled my life with so much joy, and I wanted to share a bit of that with my readers.

Where did your love of all things bookish come from?
When I was a young girl, my mom would read to my brother and sister and me every night before bed. Usually it was only a chapter from The Secret Garden or the Chronicles of Narnia or whatever book we were reading. I fell asleep more often than not, but stories have always been a place of comfort for me—an escape into a magical world that I couldn’t otherwise visit. And when I began writing, I realized that I could create my own worlds, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

How long have you been writing?
I wrote my first short story at the age of seven and signed my first book contract at twenty-seven. I wrote a lot of really bad stories in those twenty years, but I also learned a lot about writing and the creative process. My first novel was published in 2009, and I’ve written 10 novels, a novella, and a handful of short stories since then.

What cultural value do you see in writing/reading/storytelling/etc.?
Oh, my! Beyond the scientific studies (those who read tend to live longer, reading to children helps them learn, etc.), stories offer us something that we can’t get anywhere else—a chance to see the world through someone else’s eyes. I read an article recently that talked about how readers are much more empathetic than non-readers, and I believe it. Reading someone else’s story, diving into a story that isn’t ours, forces us to consider another point of view. Maybe we don’t agree with the character’s choices or decisions, but we can begin to see why they made some of them. And understanding a fictional character can lead to understanding the real characters we share life with. And that understanding can lead to kindness and compassion. I, for one, want to live in a world where more people show kindness and compassion. So I hope people keep reading.

How does your book relate to your spiritual practice or other life path?
My faith in God plays a big part in all of my books. Generally my characters are working out their faith in ways that I have. During a season of my life marked by major transitions, I learned to trust God to get me through the difficult times, and that theme appeared really organically in my next book. In Where Two Hearts Meet, the hero struggles with releasing his regrets, instead trying to carry them on his own. That’s something I’ve tried to do too. What God is teaching me often appears in my books because it’s on my mind and filling my heart.

Just for fun. . . if you had a superpower, what would it be?
I love to visit new places, but I don’t particularly like being cooped up on a plane for endless hours. So I’d like to have teleportation abilities.
