Growing up, Christmas was THE time of year around our house. My favorite memory is one Christmas morning as our family gathered to open gifts and celebrate, the phone rang. One of my father’s customers was calling to see if he could still buy a bike for his son (on credit). Daddy left our celebration, went to his store, assembled the bike and delivered it—no charge. That lesson of the importance of doing for those who had far less than we did is one I have carried with me throughout my life.

One favorite Christmas memory that comes to mind is so special because it was so atypical.

For a short and wonderful time immediately after college, my sister, my cousin, and I shared a dingy little apartment in Minneapolis. For Christmas, we brought home the smallest, spindliest, saddest looking Charlie Brown tree we could find and decked it out with homemade ornaments and strands of popcorn garland. Christmas morning, we sat on the floor around our twiggy little tree and stirred our coffee with candy canes as we exchanged our gifts.

It was the only Christmas quite like that that we ever shared. Now that we are spread out across the state and the country, it is rare that the three of us can get together. But I will always feel fortunate to have had that one unique and special Christmas.

Among my family’s favorite memories is what came to be known as the “Guess What Santa Left on The Roof” game.  It all started one dismal day in January when I found a set of building blocks, hidden in my closet, that Santa was supposed to have left under the tree.  My solution was to say I’d found it on the roof. “Santa must have dropped it,” I announced to squeals of delight. It really brightened the day and started a tradition.  Every year thereafter, until the children left home, Santa left a surprise by the chimney to be found after Christmas.  The funny part is that no one ever thought to ask what Mom was doing on the roof.

When I was girl of about ten years old, my daddy was horribly burned in a fire a month or so before Christmas and in bad shape. Back then, children weren’t allowed in the hospital, so it was a very traumatic time with bleak, uncertain days. But I awoke on Christmas morning to find him home. I’ll never forget the joy and us all together again.

One special memory of mine is from two years ago when my husband handed me a big can of popcorn for Christmas. I had to dig through the popcorn to find the secret present, which was a magazine picture of a wedding ring. I had to keep digging, and I came up with $5,000!  The money was for me to buy whatever ring I wanted for our fiftieth wedding anniversary!  Big surprise! I bought a really beautiful ring, but I wear my original wedding ring set on my middle figure right beside the new one!
