Review:

Hall Ways Review: As an ocean-lover, I was initially drawn to this book by not only the title but the beautiful cover art with softly-colored starfish (or more appropriately named sea star) and surrounding sea anemones. Though I don't usually recommend opening a book to its widest, I do on this paperback so that you can see the full back and front cover spread. Author and illustrator Nancy Carlisle's art is at its best when depicting nature scenes, with the soft hues of the water contrasting the bolder colors of man-made elements. I'd buy a book of nothing but her nature illustrations. Lovely!

I was expecting a story about a young girl discovering how human habits affect ocean life, and that story is there. I was not expecting to learn so much about projects and resources available right now to make striking environmental changes (edible water capsules?!).

Saving the Seas for the Purple and Green functions on two levels. First, there is the basic story of Violet paying attention and thinking through the alarming consequences of trash making its way to the ocean. Violet encounters people who are making a difference, and it inspires her to do the same.

On a second level, the author includes disturbing facts and statistics about ocean trash. However, she counters these with amazing projects and textbook definitions for readers to feel hopeful -- and hopefully, helpful -- about changing the way they live and about everyone doing their part to save the planet.

Carlisle goes a step further by providing several resource pages at the end of the book that are actionable -- a "How Can You Help" section, glossary of terms, books and websites for learning more (The Cigarette Surfboard?), and the all-important reference page to show sources and back up the facts. (This last item in itself is a valuable tool to show children.) These back pages are what make this book an excellent resource for educators to use in the classroom.

Because the concepts are a little complicated for the youngest readers, I  recommend Saving the Seas for the Purple and Green as a read-aloud or read-along story. I also recommend the adult pre-read, especially if reading to a group of kids, because there is a lot of information on the pages and the layout could disturb the reading flow.

This isn't a book meant for quick or one-time reading. The illustrations will keep readers lingering over the pages, and the content will keep the conversations lively.
