(Lies, Book 1)
BY ANDREW CUNNINGHAM
Narrated by Greg Hernandez

Audio Book Length: 7 hours 20 minutes

Released: Dec. 22, 2017
Genre: Mystery, Modern Detective

Synopsis

"I come from a long line of idiots."

Those were the last words his father uttered before dying, and from what he knew of his family tree and the unfortunate end that came to so many of his ancestors, Del Honeycutt couldn't disagree. What he didn't know was that his family held dark secrets - secrets that were about to come crashing down upon him.

A seemingly innocent date gone tragically wrong plunges Del into a web of murder, lies, greed, and a hidden fortune dating back to a crime committed 85 years earlier by his great-grandfather. Accompanied by Sabrina, the sister of Del's brutally murdered date, a violent journey of discovery and fear begins. Pursued by vicious killers intent on eliminating anyone with knowledge of the 85-year-old crime, their only hope of survival is to find the reason behind the original crime and why, decades later, someone is still willing to kill to keep it hidden. But Sabrina is concealing a monstrous lie of her own. Is she who she says she is?

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audio book review. Author Andrew Cunningham offers readers an intricate plot that wonderfully weaves together multiple characters across multiple timelines. There is plenty of action with twists and dangerous, often deadly turns as main characters Del and Sabrina dig deep to uncover long-buried truths -- and maybe find love in the process.

Readers who enjoy some historical basis and facts in their books will like how Cunningham sprinkles them into All Lies. (Be sure you listen/read the Author’s Note at the end -- so interesting.) You can’t go wrong with hidden treasure; however, I also enjoyed the bookish parts of the plot -- one of the main characters is a bestselling author, another important character has that years-old work-in-process, and there’s a discovery of a little-known book that holds important information. (Though it felt a little “info-dumpy” when parts of that book were read, word by word.) Those pieces added extra appeal to the story for this book nerd.

Readers must suspend their disbelief a bit, which is fine most of the time. But, I was bothered because one part of the hidden treasure is painfully obvious, yet our very educated MCs don’t figure it out until near the end. Though that was a hard pill to swallow, I forgave and forgot it as the story cranked up with a flurry of action and intensity in the final chapters. A well-placed and unexpected twist (or two!) enrich the story and provide a satisfying resolution. All Lies is thoroughly entertaining, and I have no hesitation in reading Fatal Lies, the next book in the series.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: All Lies opens with an ear-catching line and narrator Greg Hernandez pulls in the listener with his warm and mildly expressive voice. He is storytelling, and as new characters are introduced, he adjusts to create a different voice for each. Happily, his female characters sound different from the males (and each other) without sounding artificial or falsetto. I was okay listening at regular speed, but at some point, the narration shifts. The delivery remains even, but the narration sounds somewhat stilted and more like the book is being read instead of its story being told. The narration is especially awkward with sex and love scenes, but the text is somewhat awkward for those scenes, too. (I recall this same issue in Deadly Shore, the last book I listened to with this same author/narrator team.) Even with these issues, Hernandez’s delivery works because of his perfect enunciation and his marvelous voice.

Thank you to Audiobookworm Promotions and Mr. Hernandez for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give.

I received this audio book as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Greg Hernandez. The gifting of this audio book did not affect my opinion of it.

ANDREW CUNNINGHAM: I'm the author of novels in several genres, including, mystery, thriller, and post-apocalyptic science fiction. Under the name A.R. Cunningham, I've also written the Arthur MacArthur series of mysteries for children.

I was born in England, but have spent most of my life living in the U.S.—including 25 years on Cape Cod before moving to Florida. A former interpreter for the deaf and long-time independent bookseller, I've been a full-time freelance writer and copy editor for many years. A 4th-degree Master Black belt in Tang Soo Do, I finally retired from active training when my body said, "Enough already! Why are you doing this to yourself?" I'm married, with two grown children and two awesome grandsons. My wife and I spend as much time traveling as we can, and are especially fond of cruising the Caribbean.

I have been gratified by the response to my books. When I published Eden Rising back in the spring of 2013, I had no idea what to expect. When I sold my first few copies, I was excited beyond belief that someone was willing to take a chance on it. Numerous books and thousands of copies later, I am still humbled by the emails I get from readers telling me that my books kept them up late into the night.

In October of 2014, Wisdom Spring made me an official Amazon Bestselling author, a thrill I never thought would happen. But it still comes down to being able to bring a few hours of escape to a reader. That's what it's all about for me.

I hope you will try my books. Please feel free to email me with your comments.
