So he’s going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.

But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It’s up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby—and the truth—forever.

1965. Sandy runs away from home to escape her mother’s abusive boyfriend. Becca falls in love with the wrong man. And Faith suffers a devastating attack. With no support and no other options, these three young, unwed women meet at a maternity home hospital in New Orleans where they are expected to relinquish their babies and return home as if nothing transpired.

But such a life-altering event can never be forgotten, and no secret remains buried forever. Twenty-five years later, the women are reunited by a blackmailer, who threatens to expose their secrets and destroy the lives they’ve built. That shattering revelation would shake their very foundations—and reverberate all the way to the White House.

Told from the three women’s perspectives in alternating chapters, this mesmerizing story is based on actual experiences of women in the 1960s who found themselves pregnant but unmarried, pressured by family and society to make horrific decisions. How that inconceivable act changed women forever is the story of No Names to Be Given, a heartbreaking but uplifting novel of family and redemption.

Deep Roots: The Deep Series, Book 3 ~ Audio Book Review

DEEP ROOTS
The Deep Series, Book 3
written and narrated
by NICK SULLIVAN

Publisher: Wild Yonder Press

Genre: Action-Adventure
Length: 7 hours 11 minutes
Release date: May 12, 2020

ABOUT THE BOOK: In the mangroves of Belize, something ancient lies hidden beneath the roots. And when it surfaces, so too will one of man's baser inclinations. The root of all evil: GREED.

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have enjoyed months of quiet on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. After surviving Hurricane Irma and a mountaintop madman, the two divemasters have finally begun to relax. Big mistake.

Following on the fins of the best-selling thrillers Deep Shadow and Deep Cut, this third Caribbean action adventure in The Deep Series takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Belize. From the offshore cayes to distant lagoons, from tropical rivers to jungle ruins lost in time, Boone and Emily race to untangle themselves from a deadly plot that threatens to shatter their lives.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: Nick Sullivan's Caribbean Dive Adventures just keep getting better -- this is the third book (Book 1, Deep Shadow & Book 2, Deep Cut ) and it's best yet in both plot and narration. I cannot wait to dive into the next book (see what I did there?). The serenity and beauty of the island setting juxtaposed with the dark goings-on underwater and in the criminal underworld make for an action-packed, high interest story you'll read straight through.

Sullivan masters the world building – the paradise setting of Belize and its sparkling waters draws in readers, but something sinister is lurking beneath the surface, and readers can’t help but stick around to find out exactly what it is.

DEEP ROOTS is packed with quirky characters that readers will love and villains that readers will loathe.  The relationship between main characters Emily and Boone continues to gel, and I appreciate that Sullivan shows how it's truly a partnership. The author portrays a healthy relationship and the importance of communication, particularly for this couple who has been through some pretty harrowing experiences and both suffer a bit of PTSD. Best part for this reader? Though this relationship is central to the story, and though there's a very HEA, the focus of the story is the action, adventure, and suspense -- not the romance. Hooray!

The author is again the narrator of the audio book of DEEP ROOTS, and he perfectly voices the characters. There is never any confusion about who is talking (again, kudos to the writing), and he does some great island accents and in this story, he has gotten Emily's voice just right. The dueling accents of Emily (London) and Boone (American) was really fun and I enjoyed the "pronunciation denunciation."

I was thrown by some unexpected and unnecessary F-bombs, which are always more startling to hear than read, but overall, this is a well-written, well-voiced story start to finish. Readers can jump in on this series at any point, but as is the case with most series books, it's always the best experience when you can start at the beginning to get the backstory and watch characters (and author skills) grow.

Highly recommend the book and the series, and I'm ready to start book four,  DEEP DEVIL. Happily, it’s already out in the world, and if I play my cards right, I might finish it just in time for the fifth book. (Because the series MUST go on!)

Thank you to the author for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion -- the only kind I give.

A Letter to Potential Readers—The Shade Under the Mango Tree

Dear Reader,

Luna, the heroine of The Shade Under the Mango Tree, decides to write about her experience in a foreign country. Not only to tell the world about it, but also to help herself heal. Can writing help you heal? Yes, it can. And if you want to know more about it, try this post: WriteTo Save Your Life (or, at least, your psyche). It’s one of my inspirations in writing the book.

This type of writing can take many forms. A journal like Luna does. A letter to no one in particular. Or a book—fiction or nonfiction like a memoir.

In The Shade Under the Mango Tree (SUMT), my characters reflect a little part of me. I think it’s inevitable even when you write fantasy or sci fi. I also pay homage to grandparents. In these times when both parents often work, it’s not unusual to turn to them for help in looking after children. Both Luna and Lucien were (more or Less) raised by grandparents. My own grandmother figured significantly in my growing-up years.

Love is at the core of all my stories. Aren’t they in everyone’s life if you allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to another? Love strips you bare to both hurt and happiness. Love demands surrendering your control. Still, my novels don’t fit neatly into the romance genre. Because, ultimately, they’re about life, about our messy, complicated, wonderful lives. So SUMT includes some narrative of a foreign country’s deadly history and a suicide.

I hope the book speaks to you in some way.

All the best,
Evy Journey

A Texas Reckoning

In the early morning hours after a law firm recruiting party at a beachside house on Galveston Island, a female summer intern is found lying on the floor, bruised, bleeding and unconscious.  Four men and one young woman attorney who were staying at the house know something terrible happened.

The woman attorney takes her to a hospital but the next day the intern disappears. All of them decide to keep silent, doing nothing about the incident in order to further their own career ambitions while the events of that night haunt the two women.  Time passes and then ten years later, crime and hubris bring the former intern back into their lives.  Only this time she has the power and the truth is finally brought to light, uprooting everyone’s plans.

From the power centers of Houston law and oil to the fracking fields of South Texas to the Jersey Shore and Washington D.C., this story chronicles the struggles of two ambitious young women in their quest for legal success and justice.

PRAISE FOR CRUDE AMBITION:

“Crude Ambition is a great read.  It is an authentic look at big law in Houston and the Texas oil business.  Patricia Hunt Holmes weaves a story of ambition, greed, romance and revenge that kept me turning the pages until all the just desserts were served.”

-- Marc Grossberg, J.D., Author of The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors

“In Crude Ambition, Patricia Hunt Holmes shows she knows Texas in the way Grisham knows Mississippi—politics, environment, strong men and strong women, egos, oil, arrogance, influence and hunger for power.  I don’t think anyone could have nailed it better.”

-- Bill Sarpalius, Former U.S. Congressman, Author of The Grand Duke of Boys’ Ranch

Guest Post by Patricia Hunt Holmes

I write books about strong women who are confronted with physical abuse or psychological pressure but nevertheless survive.  I wrote my first novel, Searching for Pilar, which was published in 2018, as a result of learning about the terrible crime of sex trafficking and finding out that the city I lived in was the largest hub for sex trafficking in the United States.  I had to do a lot of research that involved reading survivors’ stories and talking to survivors, talking to the FBI, local law enforcement and prosecutors.  But I felt passionate about making people like myself who lived comfortable lives aware of what was going on all around us.  I knew my friends would not read the terrible tales survivors told, so I decided to write a thriller/suspense story that took place in Mexico and in Houston that people would actually read.  Pilar is an innocent young wife and mother who is tricked into applying for a job that is a trap to kidnap girls and women.  A cartel smuggles Pilar and two 13- and 14-year-old girls across the border to Houston, where they are forced to work in the back rooms of glitzy Galleria area men’s clubs and later in an infamous barrio cantina/brothel.  Pilar’s brother, Diego, searches for Pilar in Mexico and then in Houston, aided by a young woman lawyer and a private detective.   Pilar is an incredibly strong woman who struggles to survive and to keep the girls captured with her alive.

Houstonians told me that they identified with many of the characters of different classes I described in my book.  The city of Houston is a character in the story, which let locals see familiar settings in a new light. I believe I was successful in playing some part in revealing the unspeakable nature of the life that the poorest, least free women among us are forced to live.

My new book, Crude Ambition, is also a story about two young women struggling against the odds to achieve their goals.  But these women live in a world with which I am actually familiar, the world of big law and oil.  I had a 30-year career as a lawyer in a large, international law firm.  I loved my practice, my colleagues and clients.  The characters and story in Crude Ambition are fictional but I know the issues young women face in law firms:  getting good work, being taken seriously, being seen as assertive but not aggressive, being attractive but avoiding sexual overtures, and having to work harder and bill more than their male colleagues, for example.

Although the story is about the two different career paths Carolyn and Laura take after Laura is assaulted at a law firm recruiting party and disappears, I explore several different issues in Crude Ambition.  The lawyer/client relationship is one of the most important parts of being an attorney.  It can produce great benefits or, if the client is dishonest, and the lawyer turns a blind eye, cause the lawyer’s downfall.   Choosing practical solutions which advance one’s ambitions instead of sticking to moral principles is another issue I explore in Crude Ambition.  Finally, having a support system among women is invaluable and both Carolyn and Laura could not have succeeded without the encouragement and help of another female lawyer. In Carolyn’s case it is her glamorous colleague, Cynthia.  In Ann’s case it is an intelligent, young black female attorney who befriends her and helps her find justice.

I have met many smart, successful women in my life who have been friends, mentors or inspirations.  By writing about strong women, I hope I can inspire the women who read my books to set a goal and go after it, whatever the obstacles.

Patricia Hunt Holmes spent 30 years as a public finance attorney with a large international law firm, specializing in nonprofit healthcare finance and rural electric cooperative finance. The Forgotten World ~ Lone Star Book Blog Tours New Release Book Blitz!

The Forgotten World
by
Nick Courtright

Genre: Poetry / Travel / Fatherhood
Publisher: Gold Wake Press
Date of Publication: August 1, 2021
Number of Pages: 88 Pages

In his third collection, poet Nick Courtright explores the world at large in an effort to reconcile selfhood as an American in the international community, while also seeking anchors for remembering a wider world often lost to view in our shared though increasingly isolated experience of reality.

Beginning in Africa with investigations of religion and love, The Forgotten World then moves to Latin America to tackle colonialism and whiteness. From there it travels to Asia to discuss economic stratification and Europe to explore art and mental health, culminating in a stirring homecoming to troubled America, where family, the future, and what matters most rise to the forefront of consideration.

Through all of it, Courtright displays a deft hand, at once pained, at once bright, to discover that although the wider world seems farther away than before, the lessons it offers are more needed than ever.

"In The Forgotten World, Nick Courtright explores the intersections of being a citizen of one country and the desire to live as a citizen of the world..." - Octavio Quintanilla, author of If I Go Missing and 2018-2020 Poet Laureate of San Antonio

When Ellie Fields accepts a teaching job in a tiny Louisiana town deep in bayou country in 1949, she knows her life will change--but she could never imagine just how dramatically.

Though rightfully suspicious of outsiders, who have threatened both their language and their unique culture, most of the residents come to appreciate the young and idealistic schoolteacher, and she's soon teaching just about everyone, despite opposition from both the school board and a politician with ulterior motives. Yet it's the lessons Ellie herself will learn--from new friends, a captivating Cajun fisherman, and even a legendary white alligator haunting the bayou--that will make all the difference.

Take a step away from the familiar and enter the shadowy waters of bayou country for a story of risk, resilience, and romance.
