Tree “Bigfoot” Smith and Cedar Jones first meet on the day they join the US Cavalry’s Fourth Cavalry Regiment based out of the Historic Fort Concho in what is now San Angelo, Texas, in 1870.

Their journey takes them into the heart of the dangerous Llano Estacado region known as the Comancheria. The area is ruthlessly defended by a band of Quahadi Comanche and their stoic leader, Lonely Horse. The Troop encounters a large group of Comanches and the gun-running Comancheros at Mushaway Mountain, close to Gail, Texas. A quick battle ensues that leaves eight men dead.

Post Cavalry life finds Tree Smith and Cedar Jones as cowhand and cook on the large Rolling J cattle ranch in South Texas bordering the Rio Grande River. The ranch employs two Vaqueros from the village of Montenegro in Mexico, just across the river, whom Tree befriends.

The quiet life on the Rolling J ranch is brought to an abrupt halt when a local sheriff warns that a band led by the cold-blooded, sadistic killer known as Gato Montes has been preying on the ranches along the Rio Grande. After the sheriff is nearly killed by these men, Tree is tasked with tracking them down, only this time, he is traveling alone and the dangers are greatly multiplied. His epic journey takes him back into the Llano Estacado where he is captured by Lonely Horse and taken to Mushaway Mountain where the Comanche carry out their own form of frontier justice.

Tree’s return journey puts him on the same path as Marco, a Mexican goat herder, who rides with him to the Mexican Village of Montenegro, where Tree meets Julia, who changes his life forever after he becomes involved in and bears witness to the wonderful celebration of Dia de los Muertos.

US Marshal Madison James may not be sure who shot her three months ago, but she does know one thing--it's time to get back out into the field. When her partner, Jonas Quinn, receives a message that a federal warrant just came in on a man connected to a string of bank robberies, Madison jumps at the chance to get back to work. What she and Jonas find is a bank robbery in progress that's gone wrong--and things are about to get worse.

For these bank robbers, it's never been just about the money. It's about taking risks and adrenaline rushes -- and getting caught is not part of the game. When the suspects escape, Madison and Jonas must hunt them down and bring them to justice before someone else--someone close to them--gets hurt . . . or worse.

From Seattle to the San Juan Islands, bestselling author Lisa Harris takes you on a nonstop chase where feelings are complicated, and failure isn't an option.

From Chapter One of
The Chase
by Lisa Harris

“You can feel free to stop by with breakfast any morning of the week. I promise I won’t complain.”

He laughed at the comment and picked up one of the bacon croissants. He took a bite. “Did you run this morning?”

She glanced out the window, not surprised it was still raining. “I chose to bike indoors over getting soaked.”

“I don’t blame you.” He wiped his mouth. “How was your last day in physical therapy?”

She turned back to him. “Worried about my overdoing it?”

“Maybe.” He took another few bites of his croissant, finishing it off quickly.

“I passed, Jonas. I even did a ten-minute mile.”

“Not bad. You’ve worked hard these past couple months.” Jonas grabbed a second croissant. “How are you sleeping?”

She avoided his gaze, focusing instead on her breakfast. “Why the twenty questions?”

“Just making conversation.”

Right.

“I know I slept, because I dreamed a lot.” She kept her voice even, not wanting him to worry about the nightmares that woke her up most nights. Or the memories that refused to surface.

“The memories will come back eventually,” he said, reading her mind. “Just give yourself some time.”

Except she’d given herself time, and three months hadn’t been enough.

She waved her hand like it didn’t matter. “Stop worrying about me, Jonas. I’ll get through this. It’s part of the risk we take every day.”

Ironic, though, how she could chase a convicted felon halfway across the country and end up with barely a scratch, and then turn around and get shot in her own home. The place where she was supposed to be safe. It was part of the reason she’d put her old house on the market and snatched up the property she’d been eyeing in a different neighborhood. All new locks and double bolts on the doors had helped ease her anxiety. Running scared wasn’t something she was used to. She was the one who went after the criminals. Not the other way around.

But what she did know about the accident terrified her. Whoever had shot her had also murdered her husband.

“I just wish whoever shot me wasn’t still out there,” she said.

“We’ll find them,” he said.

“How? We have nothing.” She grabbed a napkin from the bar, wiped the sticky sugar residue off her fingers, then eyed the spinach croissant before picking it up. “No forensic evidence. No DNA or fingerprints. Even our one eyewitness— yours truly—doesn’t have anything, and we know I was just a couple feet from the shooter.”

At least that’s what she’d been told from the ballistics report.

“You’re putting yourself under too much pressure.”

“No.” She shook her head while Jonas grabbed another croissant and started eating it. “I need to remember. Luke has been dead for five years, and I’m no closer to finding his killer than we were the day he was murdered.”

She’d told Jonas some of the details of the day her husband died. Luke had just finished a twelve-hour shift in the ER. He’d called her on his way to the parking garage like he did almost every day. He said he would pick up some takeout and meet her at home once she got off. She expected him to be there when she pulled into the driveway. Instead, two officers from her district office were waiting to give her the news that Luke had been shot twice in the chest in the hospital parking garage.

For her, life was never the same again.

Madison ran her hand automatically across the four-inch scar on her stomach, trying to focus on the spinach croissant she’d been nibbling.

She hadn’t told Jonas how many hours she spent going over every scrap of evidence the authorities had collected on both Luke’s death and the attempt on her life.

But all she’d found were dead ends. The only evidence they had was a black rose left at the scene—mirroring the cryptic message someone left on Luke’s grave every year—confirming in her mind that whoever had shot her was the same person who’d killed Luke. But she had no idea what they wanted. Or when they might strike again.

Book Review:

HALL WAYS BLOG: BOOK REVIEW: First, beware the book trailer for Cleo Can Tie A Bow because you will not be able to get the little jingle out of your head. But, the book trailer does give you a delightful peek into the equally delightful book that author Sybrina Durant has written to help kids learn to tie bows.

The illustrations in Cleo Can Tie A Bow are top-notch, and I will look for other media illustrated by Pumudi Gardiyawasam. From the pink-o-rama of Cleo’s bedroom and world to the lush greens of the outdoors, the artwork is eye-catching and will completely immerse readers in the story. The wide, expressive eyes of all the characters will also draw-in readers and help establish a connection. The color palettes (there are really two sets since there is a story within the story) and the skillful artistry are sure to make the book a hit with readers young and old. Make sure those grubby hands are washed before reading because kids will want to touch the richly-drawn pages.

Author Sybrina Durant begins the book with a direct message to the parents, and she ends the book with a direct message to the readers. These bookends underscore that the book shines best when an adult and child read it together. I can imagine the giggles and hilarity of going through the steps to tie your own bows, either by following Cleo’s model or that of the rabbit and the fox, but that lesson is just one aspect of the book. The format lends itself to all kinds of learning opportunities across several subjects beyond tactile skills. Kids could count the bows or butterflies, or they could compare the shapes, but also there are discussions that could take place about kindness, helpfulness, and even obsession. (But truly, can you ever have too many bows?)

The school librarian in me gives high marks to a book that would be fabulous to have on the shelves to share with young readers, and the Mimi in me can’t wait to snuggle with my granddaughter and read Cleo Can Tie A Bow together. (I will have to stay on my toes since she currently likes to lick all her books!)

Thank you to the author and iRead Book Tours for giving me a gorgeous print copy in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give.

Aggravated ~ Lone Star Book Blog Tours Book Blitz & Giveaway!

AGGRAVATED
BY MICHAEL SIROIS

Publisher: Truth Boots Publishing, LLC
Pages: 389 Pages
Pub Date: December 11, 2020
Categories: True Crime / Criminal Procedural Law

Scroll for Giveaway!

Description: In 2006, the author's brother, Steve Sirois, was sentenced to serve 35 years in a Texas prison for a horrendous crime, aggravated sexual assault of a child -- a crime Steve swore he didn't commit. After the conviction, Michael started helping Steve write his appeals, but what he saw in the trial transcripts made him question how a jury could have convicted his brother based on that testimony.

Steve's accuser originally gave vague dates for the crime but soon abandoned those dates and even replaced the details of her claims with new ones. There was no forensic evidence, no DNA, no physical evidence of any kind: nothing but his accuser's words. The author wondered if he could prove that her accusations were false. But how?

Using affidavits, court transcripts, and interviews, along with additional evidence from public information requests and other factual data, the book lays out a devastating portrait of an untruthful accuser, an overzealous prosecutor, a jury that made a deal to swap votes in order to gain a conviction, and the series of lies that led to that outcome.

Purchase: Amazon

Michael Sirois was reading by the age of four and was writing quirky short stories by the third grade. In high school he added acting to his bag of tricks. After graduating from the University of Houston, he taught writing, drama, and technology in the middle school trenches for two decades, but continued to act and write, placing well in competitions like the Writer's Digest Short Story contest and the HBO Project Greenlight series. His first novel, The Jagged Man, was published in 2015, and a two-book series, If a Butterfly, is slated to be published in late-Spring 2021.

After running educational outreach programs at Rice University for seven years, he retired and lives with his wife, Minay, in Spring, Texas, where he is hard at work on a thriller, The Hawthorn's Sting, and a mystery/thriller, Murder Between Friends, hoping to have a first draft of at least one of them by late-2021. Ideas for a few more are also floating around in that scary place called his brain. Stay tuned.
