BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: What a first chapter! From the very beginning, I was hooked on Death Grip and all it’s action-packed, page-turning fabulousness. I devoured this book, flipping digital pages so fast that my eReader may have overheated. I was so involved in the story that I barely took any notes; this says a lot about the writing. (And it’s also a nod to the outstanding editing. Bliss.) I didn’t want to get taken out of this story for even a minute.

Even though Death Grip is the fourth and final (?) installment in Travis Tougaw’s Marcotte and Collins Investigative Thrillers series, and it's the first book I've read in it, there is never a hiccup jumping in here. The characters’ relationships are established, but instead of being confusing, it makes the reader want to go back to their roots in prior installments.

Interestingly, I’ve recently read two other new releases with a Montana setting, like in Death Grip, and I’m wondering if it’s a trend. Whether it is or isn’t, I can see why authors would set a book there. I’ve never been, but Tougaw’s rich descriptions make the landscape’s beauty and perils pop from the pages. He’s also adept at writing realistic characters to love and loathe while also cleverly steering readers’ suspicions so that we’re on the fence about a character or two. Early on, my spider senses were tingling at the introduction of one person, and I wasn’t wrong in guessing that one was the baddie. But how the story unfolded, and the twisted mind and deeds of the perpetrator, had my spine tingling, too.

With the sharp writing, terrifically twisty plot, and excellent characterization found within the pages of Death Grip, readers need to prepare for an intense and wild ride that will likely lead them to binge reading the full series. *Says one of those readers.* Highly recommend.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: 4.5 STARS. Engrossing, evocative, and weighty, THE SCIENTIST AND THE SERIAL KILLER is a book that needed writing, and Lise Olsen pulls no punches and delivers.

“When you wake in the morning, the naughtiness and evil passions
with which you went to bed have been folded up small.”
– from Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up by J.M. Barrie

At one point, the author compares the world of serial killer Dean Corll to J.M. Barrie’s 1911 Neverland (not the Disneyfied version), and it feels disturbingly apropos. As the author says in her opening Author’s Note, her account in THE SCIENTIST AND THE SERIAL KILLER is “a deeply troubling tale that remains relevant and resonates through time.”

Olsen does an excellent job of setting the atmosphere for the scenes, whether it’s one set in Corll’s world or one set decades later in Dr. Derrick’s. In both worlds, there is a battle between the cooperative and the uncooperative. Readers will be angered by the inaction of the Houston Police Department despite a clear pattern of boys from the Heights neighborhood disappearing and their families begging for help. In their time, the missing boys are considered by the police to be hippies or homosexuals or poor or dysfunctional, labeled as runaways, and forgotten. In her time, Dr. Derrick faces sexism and as a women, is discounted. It is disheartening that these same prejudices persist, and families desperate for answers get only despair.

On the other hand, the advances in forensic technology over the years are amazing – triumphant, really -- and Olsen's explanations make for fascinating reading. Just the changes in FACES (Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services) in the fifteen years after its launch are mind-blowing and now allow for highly accurate facial reconstructions that ultimately helped Dr. Derrick identify some of the unknown victims. Her commitment to The Lost Boys and to science gives the dead some measure of justice and their families some measure of peace.

THE SCIENTIST AND THE SERIAL KILLER is organized into six parts, and readers are given a lot of information to process. At times, Olsen writes long sentences and repetitive passages, and we can feel the urgency with which she wants to share this story; she’s deeply invested, and by book’s end, so are we.  Though the book understandably jumps back and forth through time, Olsen provides a number of tools to help see the big picture.

One of these tools is "Sharon Derrick’s 2023 Case List," which lists the victims by year, in the order their deaths occurred. The inclusion of a maps and diagrams helps readers visualize events. A particularly powerful element of THE SCIENTIST AND THE SERIAL KILLER is that as each Lost Boy is identified, there’s a portrait of the victim and a summary of his case. I choked up with emotion every time by not only the thought of a life lost in such a violent way, but also because at last, he was identified. Photographs are also sprinkled throughout the book and though some are macabre, the photos are never gratuitous. Even a photograph of a message written on a notepad in 1972 is included, all pointing to Olsen’s meticulous research and reliance on primary sources. The extensive "Notes" and "Selected Bibliography" give readers even further insight into the murder cases and the scientists who solved them.

I read an early ARC from NetGalley last year and was able to compare it to a more recent version. Though some typos were still present, additional editing has clearly taken place and eliminated many of the errors and repetitive paragraphs that I initially noticed. I trust the final version, available for purchase on April 1, 2025, will be clean -- and I highly recommend getting a copy. I may get the audiobook since I’m already familiar with the story.

By the conclusion of THE SCIENTIST AND THE SERIAL KILLER, the bodies of thirty young men are found and nearly all of them identified, thanks to the commitment of one scientist, who felt compelled to seek justice for Houston's Lost Boys. And thanks to the commitment of investigative journalist Lise Olsen, their stories are no longer buried in the past.

Review

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK REVIEW:  When I first heard about The Girl in Cabin 13, I was captivated by the title and then really drawn to the book’s cover and the synopsis. The book starts off with a bang and puts us right into chaos and danger, introducing our main character, who’s clearly pushing the limits and who seems on the edge of being emotionally unhinged. As an FBI agent, there are harsh consequences for her actions, and the real story of The Girl in Cabin 13 picks up there. But the reader remembers…

The story is told through main character Emma’s point-of-view, and it alternates between the present and flashbacks of her difficult past. She’s had a rough life and bad luck, and she hasn’t reconciled much of it. Add to that the lack of closure to some horrifying life events, and readers understand the basis for some of her motivations and behaviors. (It feels like these flashbacks will be important to know down the road, in future books.) Author A.J. Rivers is to be commended for writing that effectively manipulates readers’ feelings; for example, in Emma, we feel sympathetic, maybe even empathetic, while also finding her immensely irritating in her immaturity and lack of professionalism.

Emma doesn’t fit the profile for an FBI agent, acting impulsively, being careless, withholding evidence, showing her cards instead of staying low-key, and forgetting that everyone is a suspect, whether they seem nice or not. This is problematic for me because I expect an FBI agent to be sharper and cleverer than Emma is shown to be. If the FBI agent moniker were removed, and Emma was a journalist or amateur sleuth – or even a former FBI agent (which is realistically what she should be), the story would have worked better. There are other issues I have with character responses not being realistic for the situations, and there’s an awkward info-dump from the killer to explain to readers why this person has done these horrible things.

While there’s not a lot of mystery around the identity of the killer, author A.J. Rivers adds some unexpected twists and the big reveal is truly startling.  Seriously: it’s unique, nose-wriggling, and macabre, and Rivers gives just the right description to it. Plus, the action really ramps up in the last quarter of the story, so readers will be on the edge of their seat, right up to the finish.

It is important for the reader to remember that The Girl in Cabin 13 is a series starter and as such, there are numerous questions that go unanswered, scenes and characters that seem important but aren’t shown to be, and loose ends that aren’t neatly tied up.  So while there is a good stand-alone case that’s resolved within this first book, it doesn’t have the satisfaction of a stand-alone book. My recommendation is that if you decide to read it, either be willing to commit to the series or be willing to let go of the niggling things that don’t add up.

ABOUT THE NARRATION:  I have nothing but love for narrator Claire Duncan. Her pacing is perfect and allowed me to listen at regular speed, and her performances of the various characters keeps their voices all unique. She lends the right amount of emotion to the characters to perfectly complement Rivers’ writing. The recording has no glitches and is professionally done. I would definitely

Thank you to the author and Audiobookworm Promotions for providing an audio code in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give.

I received this audio book as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by A.J. Rivers. The gifting of this audio book did not affect my opinion of it.
A.J. Rivers loves all things mystery and thriller. Growing up in a sleepy small town, A.J. spent her days enthralled in crime solving novels and movies. She started creating stories at a young age to escape and create adventures for herself. As a child she dreamed of solving crimes and becoming a crime fighter. She dreamed of being as great as her favorite crime solving character Sherlock Holmes. While in college she realized that leading a crime fighting life might be more gruesome than she could stomach. She decided that the best course of action would be to fuse her love of writing with her love of thrilling mysteries together. She finds inspiration from researching true crimes and is passionate about writing suspenseful novels with crazy twists. Twists that you'll never see coming. The inspiration for her first novel came when she read a news article about a missing young woman in a small town that was never found. Her question on who, what, and why brought her to her journal to discovering the dark twisted story behind the disappearance and to seek justice for the victim through her writing. Her thriller novels have elements of mystery, suspense, and romance. When she's not absorbed in a novel or working on her next thriller mystery, her favorite past time is spent with her husky. She finds great inspiration while going on hikes with her dog.

Present Danger
When Victoria Bradford got engaged, she told herself to give love a chance. Six months later, she's on the run from her angry, abusive ex-fiancé with her four-year-old daughter and nowhere to go.

Seventy miles north of Dallas, the Iron River Ranch is pretty much nowhere. That’s what its new owner, Josh Cain, wanted when he came back from Afghanistan. Big skies, quiet nights, no trouble.

One look tells Josh the pretty redhead with the adorable little girl will give him trouble of the most personal kind. But he’s seen trouble before, and he doesn't scare easy. Not when “accidents” start happening around the ranch. Not when Tory’s best friend back in Phoenix is abducted and brutalized. Not even when it looks like their current problems are only the tip of the iceberg.

But if he gets too close to fierce, determined Tory, Josh knows his nights are going to be anything but quiet. And that’s one possibility no amount of training can prepare him for...

"Bestseller Martin brings her Texas Trilogy … to a hair-raising finish with the gripping tale of a single mother on the run and the Marine veteran who offers her a second chance at happily-ever-after. Martin has a consummate skill for developing the most loveable and the most despicable characters; readers will cheer when sadistic Damon meets his well-deserved end. Martin’s finely described Texas is a delight." – Publishers Weekly
