Nine little people are born on the same day. All of them experience love and care in their different families, and they grow up doing everything together. They become the best of friends.

9 Little People is an ode to friendship and family. It is an ode to belonging and acceptance. It invites children–and their families–to imagine a community where everyone is brought together by their commonalities, as well as celebrated for their differences.

In sweet, rhyming text, author Regina Feldmann shares how the nine children change and develop, celebrating important and silly moments together—and many moments in between. Martina Stuhlberger’s thoughtful illustrations bring their world to life in vibrant colors.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Oh, what a delight it is to read 9 Little People! And it's double-y delightful to read it with my observant five-year-old granddaughter, Amelia. While we did have a misfire trying to read the ARC on Kindle (formatting was awful), and she was frustrated at having to read it on my iPad via the NetGalley app, (MIMI, why don't you have this REAL book to hold???), we had a wonderful time reading together.

In 9 Little People Martina Stuhlberger's soft, expressive illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to Regina Feldmann's rhythmic and rhyming text. The combination invites young readers to truly study the pages. My young reader made sure to verify that there are indeed nine little people on each page, and when there wasn't, she was quick to explain that some kids have siblings.
"9 little people make big plans together. 9 little people stay best friends forever."
Since the story progresses from when the babies are bulges in their mommies' tummies to when they're independent children, there are even more opportunities for page-studying and discussion. In 9 Little People, readers see children and their adults who celebrate what they have in common and their unique connections that bond them together.

Adults will likely find the author's note in the "Dear Reader" section of interest. It explains the impetus for writing the book, and it's a reminder to place faith and hope in our younger generations.

When Amelia and I finished 9 Little People (the second time), I asked her to give me a thumbs up or a thumbs down to buying the hardcover edition. She gave me TWO thumbs up! Can't get a better recommendation than that.

I received a copy of the book and reviewed this book as part of Camp NetGalley.

Book Review:

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Gingersnap Snatcher is a delightful story that will keep readers young and old amused and engaged. It's well-written and the story is told through well-balanced, lyrical rhyming, so it's ideal for a classroom, library, or home read-aloud. The vibrant and expressive illustrations by Svitlana Liuta perfectly complement author Vicky Weber's text for a fun-filled and funny reading experience. I smiled from cover to cover and can't wait to share this story with my granddaughter.

The story and illustrations were wonderful all by themselves, but for those who are musically inclined, Weber goes next level and also includes the music and words to "The Gingersnap Snatcher" song and points readers back to "vocal exploration opportunities hidden in the book." Full disclosure: I am not musically inclined, cannot read music, and had ZERO understanding of those vocal exploration opportunities. I would have loved a link to hear the song so I could sing it and needed some guidance about finding the hidden things in the book.

As an added attraction, the author shares a QR code for readers to get a free download of the gingersnap recipe or take it up a notch and order the BaKit Box that comes with a copy of the book and a cookie baking kit. (Must order by 12/14/21.)

With the story set during the holidays, this book would make a great Christmas present and basis for a family activity and quality time tradition to be enjoyed for years to come. I will definitely be exploring this author's other books.

HALL WAYS REVIEW:
"God must be a cowboy too!"

Through the eyes of a jackrabbit named Hitchin’ Post, author Julie Barker shares the full year cycle of the ranching and cowboy life. From showing the effects of a drought to the pump jacks that dot the 6Bs ranch’s landscape, the story covers a lot of territory with good ol’ Hitch narrating it all.

The common thread in every aspect of Hitchin’ Post is that the real riches in life are not monetary. Barker uses a loose rhyming format that has a nice cadence to it when read aloud, but I did have to re-read some of the lines to get the right rhythm, as it varied from page to page. Hitch’s gratitude for the life he lives shows not only in the words spoken, but in the perspectives of the delightful illustrations by Carolyn Altman (who is the author’s mother). Rich colors and textures are found on every page, which will keep children engaged and studying the pictures as much as they will hang on the words.

The writing is lovely and the book is cleanly edited (though the covers have an error or two that could use fixin’). And speaking of fixin’ -- the words Barker uses really help readers to hear Hitch’s voice and are perfect for a cowboy and the cowboy life.  I like that everything in this cowboy story turns out well and that bigger, scarier things that can happen on ranches aren’t addressed.

Kids will love this peek into the cowboy and ranching life, and they will love the thoughtful jackrabbit cowboy, Hitchin’ Post. Happily, the next book is already in the works so readers won’t have to wait long for more of old Hitch.

Thank you to Lone Star Book Blog Tours and the author for providing me a beautiful print copy in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give.

Julie Barker was born and raised in west Texas, and currently resides in Quanah, Texas, with her husband and three children.  She maintained her west Texas roots into college when she attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, receiving a degree in social work.  Julie has grown up surrounded by the ranching heritage, and felt drawn to share this way of life through the adventures of the little cowboy jackrabbit, Hitchin’ Post.  Hitchin’ Post marks Julie’s debut into the world of children’s literature.  She was fortunate to have her mother, artist Carolyn Altman, provide the cute, whimsical illustrations of old Hitch and the 6Bs, making this project extra special.

Franny the Fearless Firefly

Murphey, C. (2016). Franny the Fearless Firefly. Book Cravers Publishing, LLC.

Children's Picture Book / Rhyming / Life Lessons

I give this book 5 out of 5 Stars

Blurb: Franny the Fearless Firefly is about a firefly named Franny, who learns a valuable lesson when her fearlessness gets her into trouble.  Focusing on words beginning with the letter ‘F,’ this book introduces the young reader to alliteration.  Franny the Fearless Firefly is the first in what will be a series of illustrated books that use a creature, the character’s name, and a personality trait starting with a common letter.

Hall Ways Review:  Frankly, Franny the Fearless Firefly is fabulous and fun!

I am a huge fan of children's books, like Franny the Fearless Firefly, that have the potential to be used in a wide variety of ways. Of course, primarily, a children's book needs to be pleasurable for children to read and enjoy. (check.) Equally important is that the book is well-written and models effective writing that just might inspire young readers to be good writers, too. (check. check.) Add to this formula colorful, stimulating illustrations, excellent life-lessons, and interesting characters (check. check. check.), and the book knocks the ball out of the park. Author and Illustrator Christina Murphey has indeed hit a home run with this absolutely delightful story.

The first time I read the book, my head was spinning as the librarian and teacher in me thought of ways to use the book as a teaching tool for the very young and even older students.  The second time I read the book, I viewed it through a young reader’s lens and was thoroughly entertained by the somewhat mischievous main character, Franny, and the rich, engaging illustrations (LOVE Franny’s dad’s mustache).  And then I read the book again because it’s that kind of book: a re-reader. (Yes, I made-up that word, but it works.)

Another plus to Franny the Fearless Firefly is the excellent Bonus Content section at the end of the book.  It includes directed reading questions, fast facts, and definitions at the along with sources cited. There are so many learning applications for the book, but the best thing about it is that readers will learn something, whether they realize it or not.

Thank you to the author who provided me an eBook copy in exchange for my honest review – the only kind I give.
