ABOUT THE BOOK:

Moving into a new condo with her family doesn’t help, especially given the gossipy neighbors. But just when Lyn needs a friend the most, a monstrous cartoon ghoul climbs out of the pages of a comic book and into her life! The bizarre duo will soon discover just how many secrets lie within the walls of Forest Court Apartments.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: It had been a while since I read a graphic novel, and I must say that jumping back in with Kasey Iris’s Ghoul was a delight. Iris is both author and illustrator and excels on both fronts.

The color scheme in GHOUL (mauve/rose) was a great choice for conveying the often-melancholy storyline of a teenager Lyn’s grief in losing her best friend to suicide. Her parents recognize a change is needed and move the family overseas, to the US, in hopes that Lyn can get a fresh start.

In their new apartment building, Lyn not only finds a new friend (Imaginary? Real?) and a bit of intrigue in the rumors surrounding a neighbor who may—or may not—have killed his wife and son. (Interesting side note from this reader who’s considerably older than the target audience: apparently, we don’t say “killed” or “dead;” we say “unalived” or “unalive.”)

Being out of practice with graphic novels, I had a little difficulty following the flow of the text bubbles, especially with the Tagalog translations sprinkled throughout. But kudos to the author for corralling all those terms in a glossary of terms at the end. Fortunately, the expressive and evocative illustrations assure that readers are never lost or confused. And the spooky, spiritual, mysterious plot is sure to keep them fully engaged and turning pages.

There are surprises and plot twists that both charm and satisfy, and the bonus materials at the end are a real plus.  Included at the end are a fab playlist, a mini-graphic novel that the author created nearly ten years ago, and some character sketches the artist created for GHOUL.

GHOUL is a truly entertaining and thoughtful book that belongs in school libraries and counselors’ offices. It leaves readers hopeful and happy. I look forward to what’s next from this talented author/illustrator.

Thank you to the publisher, Top Shelf Productions, for providing me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review--the only kind I give.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: 4.5 STARS. Uplifting and thoughtful, YES - YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH by Karin J. Lund is a terrific motivational coach for all stages of life.

For those of a certain age, reading YES - YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH will channel memories of Daily Affirmations with Stewart Smalley (IYKYK). While initially, the target audience seems mature middle-school-aged to high-school-aged kids, this mom of five sent photos of selected pages to her thirty-something kids, and found a few pages that seemed eerily apropos and relevant to her nearly sixty-year-old self.

Early on, YES - YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH shifts from pure pump-you-up motivation towards a self-help angle. With questions and topics posed and space given for readers to write responses, the level of reflection and introspection required lends itself to the book being beneficial for older readers as well. People going through relationship or job challenges, or even letting go of a friendship that has run its course, will benefit from the guidance provided. Don’t be intimidated - it’s not full-on journaling. There are checklists and even circle-yes-or-no sections that feel less pressured.

“Any time YOU feel sorry for yourself, reach out and help someone else instead. You will immediately feel better.”

The recurring emphasis on YOU, always all in caps, encourages readers to accept themselves, warts and all. YES - YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH addresses life’s naysayers and how one must stay true to oneself and one’s path or purpose.  Yet it also reminds readers that sometimes self-help and self-growth starts with gratitude, looking out for and helping others, and taking responsibility for not only consequences but decisions.

“If we don’t love, respect, and value ourselves, how do we teach others to love, respect, and value us?”

Rather than a one-sitting, cover-to-cover read, taking the book in chunks allows time for reflection and synthesizing of concepts, without being overwhelmed with trying to tackle and resolve every challenge. Pages get wordier as the book progresses, but the author doles out the advice appropriately, building up to the bigger, more complex hurdles in life.

There are not chapters, but the repeated, “Just remember, YOU matter. YOU are enough,” pages are dropped regularly throughout the book at critical moments remind the reader to take a break and breathe and think. There are a few shifts to the narrator intruding with first person opinions instead of general ones, which could be off putting or even preachy for kids (or adults) who are tired others telling them what to do. But this is a minor quibble in a stellar, valuable book that counselors, clergy, and teachers should keep multiple copies on hand.

“Celebrate YOU today, tomorrow, and forever.”

Well-designed, well-written, and well-edited, YES- YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH offers just the right dose of motivation for anyone. Whether you’re experiencing self-doubt, some life confusion, or just feeling a little adrift in the world, YES- YOU MATTER, YOU ARE ENOUGH is sure to provide a beacon of light for readers.

REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the About the Book section above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Take one installment of Fear Street by R.L. Stine, sprinkle in a little Jason-vibe from Friday the 13th (after removing any graphic bits), mix in a bunch of ‘60s and ‘70s nostalgia, then let the plot simmer for 285 pages. This delightful recipe gives us The Joker’s Revenge, and it’s one heckuva twisty, turny, and titillating summer reading escape.

I’ve read some of author Nancy Beaule’s children’s picture books (click for my reviews of Chompy & the Munchy Bunch Volumes 1 & 2 and Volume 3) and enjoyed them. So when I saw Beaule had written The Joker’s Revenge, a foray into the young adult zone, I was happy to check it out.

“its chipped and faded clapboards pleading for a coat of white paint.” --from the description of the little farmhouse

From the beginning, Beaule creates evocative scenes and uses some wonderful figurative language to bring the settings to life. Readers will enjoy feeling like they are viewing all the action firsthand, and the chills that run up the spines of the characters are palpable. Adding to the realism, Beaule puts readers inside the heads of many of the characters, giving us limited access to their thoughts and feelings. There's a big invention that’s the center of a sub-plot, and while improbable, it’s a fun one to imagine existing, so readers won't mind suspending their disbelief a bit.

For adults-of-a-certain-age, the ‘60s and ‘70s nostalgia dropped into The Joker's Revenge is fabulous. Flashing back to the days of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, pedal-pushers, dialing a telephone, and Cheryl Ladd being THE Hollywood natural beauty all brought a smile to my face. There are lots of pop culture references that mostly helped this reader get a sense of time, but I wonder how many references are lost on the teen readers, The Joker’s Revenge intended audience. The plus side is that most teens won’t catch the anachronisms, and it’s possible some of the retro mentions could pique their curiosity for further research into the pre-digital world.

Admittedly, I’m struggling with the age range of the intended audience of The Joker’s Revenge being thirteen and up. I’d recommend it more for high schoolers and older since there is some heavy content and so many potential triggers (including death & grief, smoking & drinking, drinking on the job, illegal drug use, mental illness, domestic abuse, rape, sex (off-page), and unplanned pregnancy). Have all those things always existed and do they exist now? Sure. But it doesn’t mean I want my middle-schooler reading about it all in one sitting, if at all.

From an editing perspective, I’d like to see the novel have more time with an editor tightening the plot, removing repetitious segments, and smoothing transitions with the frequent, sometimes jarring changes in points-of-view. Additional proofreading is also needed to clean up numerous typos and errors. Updating these elements would take the book to the next level.

The bones of The Joker’s Revenge are solid, so most readers will find themselves immersed between the pages, ignoring or not noticing any editing issues. The primary mystery never takes a back seat, which is impressive given the plethora of sub-plots and wide cast of characters. It’s likely readers will figure out the main culprit fairly early on, but the perp’s motive? That was a huge surprise and there are some big, delicious twists leading to the resolution, where all loose ends are neatly tied together.

In The Joker’s Revenge, author Nancy Beaule shows she knows the formula for writing a mystery with plenty of appeal and quirky aspects to make it memorable. I look forward to her next novel.

Pintsized Pioneers ~ Lone Star Book Blog Tours Review

PINTSIZED PIONEERS:
Taming the Frontier,
One Chore at a Time

By Preston Lewis
& Harriet Kocher Lewis

Young Adult / Nonfiction / History
Publisher: Bariso Press
Pages: 184
Publication Date: September 24, 2024

SYNOPSIS

Children tread lightly through the pages of Old West history. Pintsized Pioneers: Taming the Frontier, One Chore at a Time gives frontier children their due for all the work they did to help their families survive. Even at early ages, the youngsters helped families make ends meet and handled chores that today seem unbelievable. Written for today’s young adults, Pintsized Pioneers offers lessons on frontier history and on the value of work for contemporary youth.

In 1850, adolescents sixteen and under accounted for forty-six percent of the national population, making them an important labor force in settling the country. Pintsized Pioneers examines their tasks and toils starting with the chores on the trail west. Children assisted in providing fuel and water on the trail and at home when they settled down. In their new locations the young ones helped grow food, make clothing for the entire family, and assist with the housekeeping in primitive dwellings.

These pintsized pioneers took on farm and ranch chores as young as six, some going on cattle drives at eight years of age. Even Old West town tykes, who enjoyed more career possibilities, helped their folks survive. In the end, many pintsized pioneers pitched in to help their families make ends meet. Difficult as their lives might have been, those children learned that handling chores helped them and their country in the years ahead. Those pintsized lessons have contemporary applications to the youth of today.

Targeted at young adults, Pintsized Pioneers is written at a ninth-grade reading level and includes a supplementary glossary. Pintsized Pioneers is an eye-opener for adult readers as well.

REVIEW
HALL WAYS BLOG REVIEW: Pintsized Pioneers: Taming the Frontier, One Chore at a Time shows that whether they were six or sixteen years old, pioneer kids did miraculous and surprisingly adult things. By giving readers example after example, often via direct quotes, authors Preston and Harriet Lewis make their point that [young] age is just a number.

As I read the book, I appreciated that the authors included first person accounts from both males and females and showed how traditional gender and age roles were thrown out the window when a family's survival was on the line. Boys took up sewing and cooking; girls plowed fields and were cowhands (including one very young girl who disguised herself as a boy and rode trails for three months herding cattle).

Pioneer children were enterprising, resourceful, clever, ambitious, and most of all capable. Take eight-year-old Mamie Rose as an illustration; at age eight, she was forced to take on all of the housework and cooking for the fifteen members of her household, including her mother who'd been blinded in an accident. Or ten-year-old Henry Young, who left home to become a cowboy and did just that, working a sixty-square-mile Texas ranch that supported some ten thousand cattle.

The Lewises provide dozens of examples of kids who not only struck out on their own at tender young ages, but stepped up at home, like it or not. For example, two Kansan brothers ages seven and twelve were tasked with the daily fresh water haul from a creek five miles away from the home. Given, "a milk cow on a mild day could consume more than a hundred and fifty pounds of water," water management was a huge and heavy chore that many pioneer children undertook.

Pintsized Pioneers includes helpful chapter headings that guide the reader along. The chapters share stories of survival in the hardest of times with youngsters raising siblings, tending farms and farm animals, hunting to feed the family, and oh, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the pages dedicated to the gathering of fuel. In reading the extensive list of euphemisms for cow poo, I chuckled more than I should have as a grown-up, and it had me recalling a college French lit class and reading François Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel, which includes a decidedly naughtier list of euphemisms. *SNORT* (If you know, you know.)

Impeccably researched and well-organized, Pintsized Pioneers includes many sources in the Acknowledgments, plus there's a Bibliography and fun Glossary, where you'll find the definition of euphemism but none of the terrific terms it references. Given the intended young adult audience, I would have liked to have seen footnotes or citations within the text, shorter chapters, and some variety in how information was presented to model formatting to keep young readers engaged.

I can envision Pintsized Pioneers being used as early as fifth grade as an excellent springboard to other learning activities in the classroom or library. It would also make a great read-aloud or read-along for grandparents to be able to share stories about their own lives and those of their predecessors with grandkids. Pintsized Pioneers puts modern life in perspective and reminds this reader that it actually wasn't so bad having to set the table for dinner, walk a few blocks to school, or mow the lawn on the weekend.

It's always a pleasure reading books authored by one or both of the talented Lewis team. I am most appreciative of my cherished personalized copy of Pintsized Pioneers. (Pictured above with my husband's boots he wore at age four; he'll tell ya those scuffs are because of the chores he had to do, but don't believe him.)
