SYNOPSIS

Canyon of Deceit by DiAnn Mills

A rescue team searches for a missing young girl and suspects all is not as it seems in this high-stakes romantic suspense novel from the author of Lethal Standoff and Facing the Enemy

When wilderness survival expert Therese Palmer receives a frantic phone call from former colleague Professor Rurik Ivanov, she is shocked by the news that his young daughter, Alina, is missing—and that Rurik wants Therese’s help finding her. She’s sure Rurik hasn’t given her the whole story . . . especially since he refuses to report the kidnapping to the police. Yet with a child’s life hanging in the balance, Therese can’t turn down this mission. She knows the clock is ticking and she can’t do this alone.

Therese reaches out to Texas Ranger Blane Gardner, whom she met seven months ago during one of her training courses in wilderness survival skills. Blane’s specialized training and background with the Crisis Negotiation Unit make him uniquely prepared for this search-and-rescue mission. He agrees to help Therese and to accept Rurik’s terms to keep Alina’s disappearance quiet, and as the two begin working together, Therese is determined the spark growing between them won’t distract from their mission to save Alina.

Traversing deep into the desert of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Alina’s last known location, Therese and Blane struggle to separate truth from lies within the mix of intel they’re receiving. As they close in on answers that suggest the involvement of Russian organized crime and a high-profile international assassination attempt, they must fight to rescue Alina before she becomes an innocent casualty of a much bigger plot—no matter the risk to their own lives

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: It takes a talented storyteller to so fully immerse a reader in her book that all else completely fades away. In Canyon of Deceit, author DiAnn Mills transports readers into the wilds of the Guadalupe Mountains and beyond in this pulse-pounding, action-packed thriller. (Author bonus points: the setting she managed to remove me from was lounging under a palm tree on a pristine Maui beach. What sea turtles and sparkling waters? Impressive reading escape.)

“The weather matched my mood. The more we learned, the more it rained disillusion.”

In Canyon of Deceit, events quickly escalate, and Mills doesn’t shy away from describing the violence that comes with these kinds of shady characters and the organizations that fund them – and the organizations that fight them. Some of the scenes are intense, but they are never gratuitous and always increase the reader’s heartrate and page-turning pace.

“My mind clicked like a photographer’s lens, sealing incredible views into my life’s album.”

I’ve read several of Mills’s books, and her gift for writing richly detailed descriptions and realistic, complex characters always shines. In Canyon of Deceit, the nuances of Guadalupe Mountains National Park pop to life on the pages, as readers explore its rugged splendor that’s both devastatingly beautiful and deadly. A few chapters later, we’re dodging bullets in dodgy dive bars where the ick-factor is palpable. And we’re seeing it all through the eyes of our main characters, Therese and Blane.

Chapters are told mostly from our MCs’ alternating points of view, so we get good insight into how these people tick. But Mills does something interesting in Canyon of Deceit by providing backgrounds of some of the unscrupulous characters.  So, readers may feel sympathy and maybe even relief that there is a reason for their evil. It forces thought about the ages-old nature versus nurture argument.

“Had God shown up to walk with me into the hereafter, one with more misery than I’d ever known?”

There is another character in this book, and it is faith. Not a character named Faith, but faith in the one sovereign God. In Canyon of Deceit, the faith journey of both main characters is front and center, which surprised me. It ventured out of the comfort zone of my own faith practice with the witnessing, instantly becoming a believer, and crediting God for the placement of a deadly bullet. My experience with the Christian fiction category in the past several years, including some of Mills’s other titles, is that the faith element is subtle: a thoughtful thread that complements the story without taking center stage -- and that’s my preference. But that’s not to say that plenty of other readers won’t enjoy the religious aspect exactly as it’s done in this book.

“Did I want to get stuck in a quicksand of crimes?”

Careful readers may pick up on small clues and bits of foreshadowing that Mills carefully sprinkles throughout Canyon of Deceit. If so, one might figure out a thing or two before the spectacular resolution reveals all the answers. But never fear! In Canyon of Deceit, there are so many shifts and twists, the pleasure is in the journey getting to the fantabulous resolution. Readers will finally let out the breaths they've been holding and miraculously, despite the body count, feel hopeful.

I read an ARC of the book, so I assume the final copy will be edited clean as a whistle, as all Mills's books have been. I recommend Canyon of Deceit for readers who want all the suspense and pacing of a high-stakes thriller but without the profanity, steamy scenes, and doom and gloom endings to bog it down.

I voluntarily reviewed this book and received a print ARC from the author
through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

Beach read bliss!

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS BLOG REVIEW. AUDIOBOOK REVIEW. In Gone by Morning, readers are given several intriguing and juicy subplots that will hold them captive until the last page. Author Linda Dennis nails the Lake Travis, Texas, setting and the affluent vibe of that area, and I couldn’t stop listening.

As someone quite familiar with the setting of Gone by Morning, I really enjoyed having a fictional peek into the lives of the wealthy and their gorgeous houses that most of us only get to see across the water. The author’s real-life realtor experience certainly contributed to the rich descriptions and decadence found in and around the characters’ homes. Mentions of actual Austin-area places, like The Driskill Hotel, The Oasis, and Zilker Park, bring a level of authenticity to the story.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Justin Fife does an admirable job voicing all the characters, giving each something unique to help readers keep up with the ever-multiplying cast. Something odd happens around the last third of the book, and his pacing changes enough I needed to change my listening speed, and there are some oddly-long and oddly-placed pauses. This mirrors a similar shift within the storyline, which suggests perhaps there were re-writes of the manuscript that necessitated some fixes to it, and created hiccups in the narration.

Upon finishing Gone by Morning, I had gone from being all-in to being confused; I even thought I’d missed a chapter because of a huge time jump. There is a huge, delicious reveal that pops out of nowhere, but sadly, it’s an info-dump that tells readers what happened instead of showing us. I’m left with more questions than answers and feel there are some big plot holes.

However, since I learned that the next book in the series, Cold by Nightfall, is already out, and the series finale, Die by Moonlight, AND a prequel, From the Shadows, are on the horizon, I’m going to give the author the benefit of the doubt. My guess is that if one commits to the full series, everything that’s murky as the waters on Lake Travis will eventually come to light. Stay tuned.

A rural New Zealand vacation turns poisonous.

Antiquities expert Annalisse Drury and tycoon Alec Zavos are at an impasse in their relationship when Alec refuses to clear up a paternity issue with an ex-lover.

Frustrated with his avoidance when their future is at stake, Annalisse accepts an invitation from an acquaintance to fly to New Zealand—hoping to escape the recent turbulence in her life.

But even Annalisse’s cottage idyll on the family sheep farm isn’t immune to intrigue.

Alec sends a mutual friend and detective, Bill Drake, to follow her, and a local resident who accompanies them from the Christchurch airport dies mysteriously soon after. A second violent death finds Annalisse and Bill at odds with the official investigations.

The local police want to close both cases as quickly as possible—without unearthing the town’s dirty secrets.

As she and Bill pursue their own leads at serious cost, the dual mysteries force Annalisse to question everything she thought she knew about family ties, politics, and the art of small-town betrayal.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: In Copper Waters, Marlene Bell is back with the fourth installment of her Annalisse Series! The New Zealand setting allows for another amazing armchair travel adventure – which is one of the things I like best about the Annalisse Series. Bell always does a great job of putting readers right in the scenes. The descriptions of not only the natural elements, but also the look and vibe of the buildings and town, add an extra dimension of enjoyment. And language lover that I am, the sprinkling of Kiwi terms and sentence constructions are a fun bonus. Oh, and it’s always excellent to (vicariously) live the lavish lifestyle of the rich and famous!

I have read two of the prior three books: Stolen Obsession (which has since been considerably revised), and Spent Identity, so the significant backstory given to readers in Copper Waters bogged things down for me; I want the here and now, not the then and there!  I wonder if it was almost too much detail for new-to-the-series readers. But, on the plus side, it does allow the book to stand alone, and when reading the blips from Anna’s prior adventures, without a doubt, it gets one’s attention and piques one’s curiosity. (Admittedly, I feel the need to go back and read Italy-set Scattered Legacy.)  Seriously – how can one gal be embroiled in so much delicious drama?

Copper Waters isn’t the same level of action and suspense as the prior books, and readers spend a lot of time inside Annalisse’s ruminations about the present, the past, and her future – with or without Alec, the boyfriend who continues to offer a ring despite Anna continuing to decline the marriage offer. Not that I blame her this time around. That sub-plot, and a contributing factor in why Anna bolts to New Zealand, are one of the interesting parts of the story.

I found that in this book, likely due to the amount of internal dialogue, I started to understand Annalisse a little bit better, and hallelujah, I think she’s maturing at last. I loved having Bill Drake back and as a more central figure. He’s a character I’d like to learn more about and one who could carry a series on his own, I think. There is plenty that happens outside Anna’s thoughts, too, and the focus on the mystery / whodunit was more enticing for me than any romantic elements. Characters and situations are not all that they seem, and kudos to Bell for an unexpected and extraordinarily chilling resolution.

I enjoy this series and am interested in seeing what happens next (a horse racing scandal, perhaps?) and maybe even what happened before…not only is Bill Drake intriguing, but I’d love to go waaaay back to what started it all and get a prequel about Anna’s BFF Samantha. There are all kinds of possibilities, and from a writing perspective, I am enjoying watching Bell, a gifted storyteller, hone her craft. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Marlene M. Bell is an eclectic mystery writer, artist, photographer, and she raises sheep in beautiful East Texas with her husband, Gregg, three cats and a flock of horned Dorset sheep.

The Annalisse series -- mysteries with a touch of romance -- has received numerous honors including the Independent Press Award for Best Mystery (Spent Identity) and FAPA (Florida Author’s President’s Gold Award) for two other installments, Stolen Obsession and Scattered Legacy. She also penned the first of her children's picture books, Mia and Nattie: One Great Team! based on true events from the Bell’s ranch. The simple text and illustrations are a touching tribute of compassion and love between a little girl and her lamb.
