HALL WAYS BLOG: Audio / Print Combo Mini-Review:

YES! Narrator Dave Clark NAILED it -- his is my favorite of the audio narrations yet. His drawl is the perfect complement to the fabulously-Texas story.

This book focused less on the Covey/JayJay relationship and more on the mysteries. Mysteries! Plural! It starts with one, and they then multiply with rapidity like West Texas jackrabbits.

Fabulously quirky and funny story -- and series. (My other series reviews: Covey Jencks, Covey and JayJay Get Educated.)

Shelton L. Williams (Shelly) is founder and president of the Osgood Center for International Studies in Washington, DC. He holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and he taught for nearly 40 years at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He has served in the US Government on four occasions, and he has written books and articles on nuclear proliferation. In 2004 he began a new career of writing books on crime and society. Those books are Washed in the Blood, Summer of 66, and now the three books in the Covey Jencks series. All firmly prove that he is still a Texan at heart.

After a rough mission in Rome involving the discovery of a devastating bioweapon, Company spy Ben Calix returns to Paris to find his perfectly ordered world has collapsed. A sniper attack. An ambush. A call for help that brings French SWAT forces down on his head. Ben is out. This is a severance--reserved for incompetents and traitors.

Searching for answers and anticipating a coming attack, Ben and a woman swept up in his misfortunes must travel across Europe to find the sniper who tried to kill him, the medic who saved his life, the schoolmaster who trained him, and an upstart hacker from his former team. More than that, Ben must come to grips with his own insignificance as the Company's plan to stop Leviathan from unleashing the bioweapon at any cost moves forward without him--and he struggles against the infection that is swiftly claiming territory within his own body.

Award-winning author James R. Hannibal ratchets up the tension on every page of this suspenseful new thriller.

PRAISE FOR THE PARIS BETRAYAL

"A masterful thriller is created by a masterful writer, and James R. Hannibal is at the top of my list. I devoured every page with the lights on!" --DiAnn Mills, author of Airborne

"James Hannibal once again displays his dazzling prose and ability to keep even the more experienced readers guessing. In The Paris Betrayal, Hannibal sets his hook deep and early, then drags you through a riveting, edge-of-your-seat story. Another gripping, high-octane book from one of the best thriller writers in the business." --Simon Gervais, former RCMP counterterrorism officer and bestselling author of Hunt Them Down

"Riveting and action-packed! The Paris Betrayal is everything you want in a thriller--suspense, intrigue, and white-knuckle action. Hannibal has a knack for keeping you guessing in a plot that moves at a breakneck speed. This is one you don't want to miss!"

--Ronie Kendig, bestselling author of The Tox Files

An Interview with Tess Montgomery (Code name: Ambrosia)

from THE PARIS BETRAYAL

by James R. Hannibal

Please tell us your background and function within the Company.

We’re not supposed to say much about our background. I was born and raised in Georgia. No family left to speak of. I did the medical school thing, and I was three years into a trauma surgery residency when the Company snatched me up. Currently, I’m a field medic assigned to the European theater of operations, but I’m heading back to DC shortly. The Director himself initiated the reassignment. Out here in Europe, I work in covert stations tucked away in the back alleys of the major cities. When a field operative needs medical assistance that reaches beyond their training, I set up a meet.

Jumping right in: You and Ben Calix. The two of you have a history, right?

Whoa. I’m not sure what you mean by history. Our paths first merged when I stitched him up on the fly in Grozny under hostile fire. He was stuck there doing grunt work as a rookie. I was there because . . . well . . . there’d been a mix-up with an earring during abdominal surgery on a senior operative. Anyway, Ben and I have been close ever since. That’s all.

Right. Close. So, what are your thoughts on Ben and Giselle Laurent?

Officially, there is no Ben and Giselle. Relationships between team members are a policy violation. But the truth is it happens a lot. Giselle always rubbed me the wrong way. She’s got that black ops homecoming queen vibe. I guess that makes Ben the quarterback. With a pair like that, most folks assume they’ll end up together—especially Giselle.

Spies and experimental pharmaceuticals: As a doctor, what are your thoughts?

Not a great match. Since the early days of pharmacology, when the practice blurred together with alchemy, we’ve known that drugs are a balance between tonic and toxin. The difference between healing and poison is a matter of dosage. When pharmaceuticals are used to increase performance rather than heal, you’re always stepping into that poison range. In our world, sometimes a bad choice is the only choice. But that doesn’t make it good.

And the most important question, we’ve saved for last: Do you think Ben Calix is a traitor?

I don’t want to think of Ben as a traitor. Believe me, I don’t. But look at what’s happening. Why would the Company hang him out there like this if Ben did nothing wrong?

James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. This former stealth pilot from Houston, Texas, has been shot at, locked up with surface-to-air missiles, and chased down a winding German road by an armed terrorist. He is a two-time Silver Falchion Award winner for his children's mysteries, a former Thriller Award nominee, and a 2020 Selah and Carol Award finalist for The Gryphon Heist--the opener for the CIA series that now includes Chasing the White Lion. James is a rare multisense synesthete, meaning all of his senses intersect. He sees and feels sounds and smells, and hears flashes of light. If he tells you the chocolate cake you offered smells blue and sticky, take it as a compliment.
