Jenkins, S. (2009). Down, down, down: a journey to the bottom of the sea. Berkeley, CA: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
My visiting friend’s young daughter had this book, and it is just a cool book to look at, designed through the graphic media of collages made of cut and torn paper. The representational style creates texture and the impression of three dimensional sea critters – from see turtles to squid. And, as the reader turns pages and progresses through the book, he/she is also descending down farther into the ocean: the deeper we go, the darker the colors. It not only was very eye-catching, but it was good information about what goes on below the surface of the water. Fun book!
