AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
(print/eBook rating)
HALL WAYS HYBRID AUDIO/eBOOK REVIEWIn Gunbarrel Highway by Sean Bridges, the tale that unfolds is a non-stop, action-packed, outrageous (yet totally believable) story that thoroughly entertains the reader.

I listened to the audiobook initially, and I don’t recommend it. More on that later. But in listening, I was able to sift through the noise enough to know this is a book that packs a punch. So, upon finishing the audiobook, I opened up the eBook and it was like a whole different story.

The attention-grabbing, blush-worthy opening paragraph told from Claudia Grant’s perspective is steamy, but not overly graphic. And for those who don’t much love the spice, fear not! That scene continues some thirty pages later, and then, the rest of Gunbarrel Highway is pure adrenaline-inducing fiction. Author Bridges does a great job in the first few chapters of building up the mindsets and character of Claudia, and the main character Daniel, before the big wreck that changes everything.

“Bro. Bro. Legal or not, who gives a shit? You. You’re guilty as fuck. You know how I know that? I saw it on TV.”

This quote from hillbilly-ish, brother-in-law Ron, may be the most poignant from the book. It highlights what strikes hardest in Gunbarrel Highway: what should be sensationalism is, sadly, easily imagined in our current political and societal climate. From the not-so-subtle racism and immoral and illegal activities of a congressional candidate to the if-it’s-on-tv-it’s-true mentality and people turning savage on each other for an improbable reward, this book mirrors our messed-up world. The plots and subplots in Gunbarrel Highway are a scary and disheartening train wreck that keeps readers turning pages.

Author Bridges knows how to flesh out his characters, presenting readers with a robust cast who fall mostly on the unlikable end of the scale. (Detective Navarro being the exception, though I couldn’t understand why San Antonio Police would be assigned a case that happened in San Marcos.) Add to that the omniscient point of view that puts us inside many individuals' heads, we know them inside and out. Bridges’s writing is engaging, and he employs some interesting style choices and word combinations; the former went unnoticed in the audiobook, but both interrupted the flow of the story when reading with my eyes. A bit of additional editing to clean-up the smattering of errors and overused words and to tighten up unnecessary and unnecessarily long passages, would take this book to the highest level.

Anyone who follows my reviews knows it’s a rare book that passes editing muster for me, and I understand that many readers will blow past the things I notice. It’s a bit of a curse to have eyes drawn to errors, and that’s why it’s often a pleasure to read with my ears and enjoy an audiobook where I can’t see them. Unfortunately, the audiobook is a hot mess.

From a technical standpoint, there are two different chapters that repeat entire scenes from other chapters, and several other places where lines are repeated. Additionally, listeners hear the narrator taking deep breaths and even swallowing. The narrator’s natural voice during expository sections is engaging, and if she’d just read the book instead of performing, it probably would have been great. But most of the characters are over-the-top, exaggerated, and unevenly voiced, and the accents chosen for some of the characters are puzzling. The pacing is inconsistent, and there are several words mispronounced. I do not recommend listening to Gunbarrel Highway because the delivery doesn’t do Bridges’s story justice.

So back to the eBook: despite the polishing issues, the twists and turns in Gunbarrel Highway are stellar. Even when the reader is likely to predict an outcome, how that outcome comes to fruition is often a huge shocker. Things get REALLY interesting with a big reveal that changes the course of the story. It is truly nothing but edge-of-your-seat reading from that point right to the end, when at last, characters and readers alike can take a collective deep breath.

The Tori Winters Mystery series -- so far!

THE TORI WINTERS
MYSTERY SERIES
By Anita Dickason

Gritty Cozy Mystery / Women Sleuths / Series
Publisher: Mystic Circle Books

I read the first two books in this amazing series right when they published (2022 & 2023, respectively). At the time, I was neck high in running my business and promoting these and other books by Texas-connected authors, and so I failed to put my reviews on my blog. THE HORROR! I've remedied that by sharing my reviews of DEADLY KEEPSAKES and MURDER'S LEGACY below.

A little birdie told me that this fabulous author is some 50,000 words into writing the manuscript for the next installment (expected pub-date June 2025), and I'm just pleased as punch! So I'm encouraging y'all to read these so you can just roll into the third book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The past becomes a deadly future.

When Tori Winters becomes the star witness in a murder trial, someone tries to kill her. Terrified, she’s not giving the killer a second chance. With all her worldly possessions packed in her car, Tori is on the run. A mysterious phone call about an inheritance leads her to Granbury. After all, who would look for her in a small, quaint Texas town?

Instead, Tori’s life is about to spin into an existence where nothing is as it seems. The historic house she inherits is steeped in secrets from the past. Secrets that may prove deadly. She’s a stranger in a strange town. Who can she trust? There is the disinherited step-grandson and the lawyer and his son. What are they hiding?

Tori’s inheritance may not be a blessing when a killer strikes again. It could be her death warrant.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: DEADLY KEEPSAKES: The first thing I do when I start a print copy of a book is to take a piece of notebook paper, fold it into fourths, and slip it in the cover so I can take notes as I read -- in order to produce a meticulously written, fact-filled book review. When I finished DEADLY KEEPSAKES, my paper was blank.

Why? Because I was immediately so engrossed in the story that I never even thought to pause and make commentary on the outstanding story development, richly-written world building, or fully fleshed-out characters that gave me gut-reactions from the get-go. This is probably the highest compliment I can give an author, but the downside is that my memory stinkles, so I can't come up with too many specifics to support how dazzled I was by this series starter by Anita Dickason.

I adore the Granbury, Texas setting, and since it's a town I'm familiar with, it made the story even more realistic. Clearly, Dickason knows the town, the vibe, and the variety of people you'll find there (the range is from the snoot-snootiest to the down-to-earth peeps that you want at your kitchen table sharing a few cuppas.

And speaking of cuppas -- DANG! Main character Tori and her crew know how to drink the java! I need to know what kind of coffeemaker she owns to be able to do the brew at a level that surely rivals any Starbucks. Their coffee consumption makes me look like a novice. The coffee angle was just one of many aspects I enjoyed.

I'm going to call this book a gritty cozy mystery. Given the author's expertise and experience in law enforcement, she gives readers a little more description in violent scenes than you'd get in a traditional cozy, but it's never gratuitous or gross. There's a hint of developing romance, but it always takes a back seat to the unfolding mystery and high action. And DANG is about as strong a curse word as you'll find in the pages.

DEADLY KEEPSAKES is the first of Anita's (many) books I've read, and I'm smitten with it! Highly recommend.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Secrets that defy time!

An inconceivable disaster brings Tori Winters’s plans for the historic house she inherited to a traumatic standstill. A section of the escape tunnel built by her great-grandfather, a notorious Dallas gangster, has collapsed. Within the rubble, there is a gruesome discovery. A skeleton with a bullet hole in the skull.

The shocking cave-in triggers an ominous scheme to condemn her property as accusations arise that the tunnel is dangerous.

Embattled, Tori soon discovers that more than the destruction of the house is on the line. It seems she can’t escape the past. It keeps clawing its way into her life with deadly consequences.

Who hides in the shadows with a motive for murder?
And … is Tori the target?

HALL WAYS REVIEW: MURDER'S LEGACY: I so enjoyed diving back into the Tori Winters world, and there are SO many directions this series could still go given the ominous final line of the novel! I am just happy that it's wide open for the next book -- because there MUST BE a next book.

Set in the very-real Granbury, Texas, MURDER'S LEGACY will tug on you to make a road trip there. Author Anita Dickason drops mentions of several very-real  local  businesses, too, even including websites to them in the extra notes at the end of the book. The Granbury Visitor's Bureau should send her a thank you card (and keep copies of this series on hand). Now, if they'd build a real Red Door Inn! I'm game.

This second volume in the series is a little different from the first with a majority of the action happening in & around Tori's mansion. The fabulously fleshed-out core characters return, and the group wonderfully expands with the addition of a few more. These are definitely people I'd want to share a cuppa with (Team COFFEE, not sweet tea).

Each day of the story's progression starts and finishes in much the same manner, but readers should pay attention to what may seem mundane. Dickason includes small details that lead to ah-ha moments later for a most satisfying resolution to almost all the loose ends (remember that ominous last line I mentioned?).

Main character Tori is really coming into her element as a capable businesswoman who won't be pushed around, but also as an amateur sleuth, which given history of her home, is sure to keep coming in handy. I've got a new category for Anita Dickason's series: Mystorical Fiction. (But for lovers of cozy mysteries, this one's getting cozier with more than one couple sending off sparks.) Much to look forward to! Can't wait.

SYNOPSIS

Gloria Bachman has pivoted so many times this year she has whiplash. Now, in the middle of winter and drenched in Mexican sunshine at a five-star resort, she has a role to play: Mason Lassiter’s “arm candy” in a sting to nab his not-actually-dead first wife, Patsy. It didn’t make any sense to her either, but who argues with government officials offering an expense-paid trip and a reason for a new beach wardrobe?

With Patsy leading resort security, FBI agents, and Mason on a merry chase, Gloria knows that if you want to catch a woman of a certain age, you have to think like a woman of a certain age. Thankfully, she’s got the credentials.

If only she could understand the other people in her life—particularly Gardner Rogers. Gloria returns home to Comfort, Texas with a ring, a pressing need to organize her house, and a custom order of Sweeties signature truffles to be delivered to White House chefs. When her business partner embarks on last-minute travel plans, one of her best friends announces a retirement, romances bloom from unlikely sources, and Gardner and her ex-husband, Harry Rogers, come unhinged—quite publicly—it all forces Gloria to face her strangest challenges yet.

This final book in the Comfort and Joy trilogy weaves happy endings for the townsfolk that readers have come to love and just deserts for those they don’t. It’s Kimberly Fish at her finest and a treasure for brave people who don’t retire quietly.

REVIEW
HALL WAYS REVIEW: What fun it was to return to Comfort, Texas, via Kimberly Fish's final installment in the Comfort and Joy trilogy! Home to Comfort illustrates what Fish does best in her storytelling: bring people and places to life with humor and panache.

My prior escapes to Comfort, a real town nestled in the Texas Hill Country, have been via the five books in the Comfort Stories, Fish's other series set there. Yes, I jumped in and started with the third book this time around! I am certain there's a literary law against doing this, but go ahead and cuff me. No regrets. I already knew the town vibe, and I had no trouble sinking right into the story where, as expected, everything and everyone felt familiar. And wonderfully relatable.

"Why, oh why, had she not chosen the pedicure, or salt sauna, or even the gentle e-Bike ride over the hills? No. She had to prove to herself she could be the person who exercised while traveling. Foolishness!”

Early in Home to Comfort, I knew that main character Gloria Bachman was my kind of gal. She's a sixty-year-old woman who's been knocked down, gotten up, rebuilt her life, rebuilt her career, and has found the man of her dreams. She's smart, witty, fashionable, and has a knack for getting embroiled in shenanigans that will have readers giggling and gasping. But readers also spend a lot of time inside Gloria's head and are privy to her fears, self-doubt, and insecurities, and we learn how she sees herself and life around her. Gloria is such an authentic character.

"Gloria's heart flipped upside down and spilled worries all over the lovely Saltillo tiles."

Not only does Kimberly Fish write authentic and engaging characters (and mercy, there are a lot of them in Home to Comfort), she has a flair for crafting sentences that breathe life into her scenes. The inclusion of colloquial phrases, like: "From your mouth to God's ears," further enriches Fish's storytelling. This serves readers well with multiple plotlines that move from a Mexican seaside resort to the Texas Hill Country; truly, there are three delicious tales in one. I'm not kidding about the deliciousness factor -- the descriptions of drinks and foods and oh, the chocolate shop delights still have me drooling.

Though I had no trouble understanding the goings-on despite having not read the first two installments in this series, I do believe it would be beneficial to read the series in order. This would surely allow readers more insight into Gloria's nemesis Gardner, better visualize the wide circle of Gloria's friends and frenemies, experience firsthand the various town crises, and experience with Gloria her path to find peace and happiness in Comfort.

Fish is a gifted storyteller, and Home to Comfort, the Comfort Stories novels, as well as her Misfits and Millionaires series are endlessly entertaining. My only quibble with Home to Comfort is that it contains a considerable number of typos that make it feel like it lacked a final proofreading. I realize that many (most?) readers' eyes fly right past these kinds of errors, so it won't affect their reading experience, and admittedly, I am jealous. But for me, it's a huge distraction from an otherwise stellar story.

If you are drawn to stories of second-chance romance, robust characters, cozy mysteries, competent women, and armchair travel, then check out the Comfort and Joy series, and start with the first book, Sweet Comfort. I'll meet you there.

One of Our Kind ~ Book Review

ONE OF OUR KIND
By Nicola Yoon

Suspense / Mystery /Dystopian / Social Commentary
Knopf
Print Length: 272 pages
Release Date: June 11, 2024

ABOUT THE BOOK: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicola Yoon’s daring new work of dystopian horror is a propulsive satire set in an all-Black gated community.

Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles.

Jasmyn’s only friends in the community are equally perplexed and frustrated by most residents' outlook. Then Jasmyn discovers a terrible secret about Liberty and its founders. Frustration turns to dread as their loved ones start embracing the Liberty way of life.

Will the truth destroy her world in ways she never could have imagined?

A gripping thriller with wry, razor-sharp social commentary, One of Our Kind explores the ways in which freedom is complicated by the presumptions we make about ourselves and each other.

REVIEW

HALL WAYS REVIEW:  It's been a long time since I have been able to read without strings attached, and when a friend and I were in a bookstore recently, and she recommended ONE OF OUR KIND, I snagged it*. I was immediately drawn in and read it straight through the day after I bought it. From the start, author Nicola Yoon drops the "something's off" in the utopian town of Liberty, CA, vibe, and the story she weaves to get to the big reveal at the end had my head spinning. ONE OF OUR KIND feels very much like Invasion of the Body Snatchers -- but without the aliens. I have to speak vaguely so that I don't give away any spoilers. Peeling away the layers in Liberty, readers will get increasingly uncomfortable with how rotten things are. Through Yoon's outstanding characterization, readers will get to go deep with the main character, Jasmyn, and watch like a fly on the wall as her world spirals. The sense of dread that Yoon builds is palpable. Reading the book from the perspective of a white woman, I felt woefully uninformed about Black culture and community and the challenges of a racially charged society. And I was reminded of things I've never had to worry about because of the color of my skin (like at what age a Black parent has the "cop talk" with their children). It was heartbreaking for so many reasons. I did not guess at the resolution -- or maybe I did but was thinking NO WAY -- and I have to admit that it smacked me hard and made me feel... well, lots of things: Sad by the spot-on social commentary and the state of racism and the impossibility of escaping it; righteously indignant that THIS is the solution the leaders of Liberty concocted; sad again that people were lining up for it. There's so much for me to unpack and think about and improve upon after reading ONE OF OUR KIND. It will stay with me a while. *I purchased my signed copy at the fabulous Sundog Books in Seaside, FL.

The Border Between Us ~ Lone Star Lit Book Campaign Audiobook Review!

THE BORDER BETWEEN US
By Rudy Ruiz

Literary Fiction
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Pages: 256
Audiobook Length: 9 hours, 9 minutes
Publication Date: August 27, 2024

SYNOPSIS
The Border Between Us is a poignant coming-of-age novel from one of the most exciting voices in fiction.

Ramón López was born along the US–Mexico border but is determined to get out and embrace the American dream—and he’s not sure whether his complicated family is a help or a hindrance. As the son of immigrants, as Ramón grows, his admiration for his entrepreneurial father sours as he watches his dad’s dreams of success wither on the vine. Ramón’s mother is constantly preoccupied with his younger brother, who struggles with intellectual disabilities. And the outside world is rife with danger and temptations threatening to distract Ramón from his dreams of making it to New York and succeeding as an artist.

As dreams clash with reality and values conflict with desires, Ramón finds the American dream within his reach—but will it demand too big a sacrifice?

Award-winning author Rudy Ruiz brilliantly captures the beauty and the danger of border life as Ramón struggles to understand his home and his place in the world. The Border Between Us is a stunning, compassionate story about a son’s fraught relationship with his father, the challenges of pursuing a creative life when you come from humble beginnings, and the power of embracing one's whole self.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

HALL WAYS BLOG: AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: In The Border Between Us, Texas author Rudy Ruiz takes readers on an unforgettable literary journey full of life lessons, limes, and most of all -- love.

From the beginning, I was fully engaged in The Border Between Us, with the tense and intense situation within which author Ruiz places readers. Given the current real-life climate at our Texas border, plus the myriad of questions to be answered about this situation, I was hooked on the López family’s stories and secrets.

“In my mind and heart, the border ran through all things, including me … It was an invisible line I straddled, rather than an imaginary boundary at which I felt compelled to stop. I saw it not as a constraint, but as an invitation. Not as an end, but a beginning.”

Readers sit alongside main character Ramón López as he grows from a boy in Brownsville, Texas, into a man of the world, ever in pursuit of the elusive American dream.  Ramón finds that part of the reason he has trouble finding the dream is because he keeps redefining it. Yet ultimately, he discovers that the dream was always right in front of him. I love the small dashes of magical realism that often help light his path.

The characters in The Border Between Us pop to life with the artistry of Ruiz’s writing. Ruiz suffuses the people and plotlines with authenticity and repeatedly illustrates the complexity of the human condition, particularly within the López family dynamic. Whether it’s Ramón’s guarded father or his saint-like mother, his rogue uncle or his sage grandma, readers will be enthralled, amused, frustrated, and yes – sometimes heartbroken as Ramón navigates the intricacies of relationships. But we’re cheering for him all the way, and we’re left thinking about these oh-so-real people long after closing the book's cover.

Eddie Lopez’s near-flawless audiobook narration pairs perfectly with Ruiz’s writing for a beautiful listening experience. There are a few blips, but my only real quibble is the narrator’s mispronunciation of Harlingen, which tells me he’s not a Texan.  I listened at regular speed, which is a rarity for me and shows the delivery and pacing are excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to this narrator again.

Though I did listen to the audiobook initially, I snagged the eBook to re-read many of the chapters because the passages are simply beautiful. I noted early on that Ramón’s vocabulary, even as a boy, is exceptional and he has thoughts that are showstoppers. For example, as he contemplates a major life change as a young teenager, he thinks: “I wonder if the river felt liberated when it met the sea.” As a tragedy unfolds for some high school classmates, he reflects these are, “Futures buried in freshly turned soil.” Later, following another tragedy, he states: “Reality is oblivious to grief.” Stunning.

The Border Between Us demonstrates literary fiction at its finest. Ruiz’s prose is poignant and powerful, yet completely readable and relatable: a perfect balance for this reader. I highly recommend this timely novel and will be indulging in Ruiz’s other novels soon. Rudy Ruiz has just secured himself on my must-read author list.
