SYNOPSIS
*Hall Ways thinks this description includes spoilers* Higher Love is the new release from Joanne Kukanza Easley, the multi-award-winning author of Sweet Jane, Just One Look, and I’ll Be Seeing You.

In 1986 Austin, Texas, sixteen-year-old Stephanie steps into sixty-two-year-old Lauren’s life, her uncanny resemblance cracking open a buried past.

Claiming to be the daughter of the child Lauren gave up for adoption forty-five years ago, Stephanie upends Lauren’s life—already complicated by her remarriage to Brett after thirty-three years apart.

Stung by her adoptive grandmother’s deception, Stephanie stays, her past of tragedy and self-harm forging a fragile bond with Lauren and Brett. When Stephanie’s college dreams are crushed, Lauren sacrifices all to give her a future—only to face a bittersweet twist that echoes the past and changes everything.

This heart-wrenching family drama delves into the enduring impact of secrets, the power of unconditional love, and the strength found in facing our pasts.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above, but beware: there are spoilers.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: First: I knew I was going to read Higher Love by Joanne Kukanza Easley since it’s a sequel, so I didn’t read the book description before starting. But reading the description now, I feel like it has spoilers that might detract from the drama of the story. But if you can’t help yourself, and you simply must read the back cover first, know that there’s still plenty of drama to carry the Higher Love along.

I just recently finished reading I’ll Be Seeing You, the prequel to Higher Love, and I’m so glad I was able to read these books back-to-back, while everything was still fresh in my mind. Plus, readers get the full saga of Ruby Lauren Eaton Owens, from age fifteen (when she looked twenty) to age sixty-two (when she looks forty-five). And what a story it is to watch unfold. In Higher Love, Lauren is less than a year into her re-marriage to Brett who, by the way, she divorced thirty-plus years earlier, and they are celebrating Lauren’s birthday when Stephanie is suddenly dropped like a hand grenade into their lives … and readers are rewarded with a page-turner ever after.

Let’s just talk about Brett Owens for a minute (or shall we call him Saint Brett the Virtuous?) This man is amazing, not only because of how he is able to forgive Lauren (if you read I’ll Be Seeing You, you’ll know the full extent), but he’s able to look at teen Stephanie, recognize she’s in need, and then is willing to change his entire life to help her. WOW. Author Easley’s writing shines as she brings Brett to brilliant, mysterious life. I absolutely want to go to Austin and hang out with him and Lauren — but maybe when Stephanie isn’t home. Ha!

“How could I be sad and mad at the same time?”
— Stephanie, age sixteen

Now, let’s talk about Stephanie. Honestly, myself a mother of a formerly sixteen-year-old daughter, to me, Stephanie seems very reasonable and self-aware. Sure, she has her teen moments, but she typically gets herself pulled together quickly, reflects, and often processes things maturely — until she doesn’t and then she rages teen angst in an extraordinarily messy way. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, those are the times she doesn’t reach out for help. Easley makes Stephanie’s misery tangible as its weight envelopes her, the whole household, and the readers. Where usually the saying holds that if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy, when there’s a teenaged girl in the mix, it’s all about her no matter how hard for it not to be. Brett and Lauren do their best, and I loved Lauren saying, “It took fewer facial muscles to smile than to frown, I reminded myself.”

Creating flesh and bone characters isn’t Easley’s only talent. She also nails putting readers right in the setting and place of Higher Love. I enjoyed the perfection and accuracy of the eighties’ teen-speak she included favorites like: ralphed, freaked out, as if, rad, grody, and barf me out. I loved all the eighties culture references to icons like Sting, Dune, and The Breakfast Club, which just came out “last year.”  Austinites will appreciate references to still-favorite eating and recreational spots and will laugh when Lauren describes Austin High School: “The big gray building was kind of ugly.” Visiting the eighties made me smile but also shake my head that somehow, it’s been almost forty years since the setting of this book (1986). I remember so much of that year like it was yesterday, and not a period that is pert near bumping into being categorized as historical fiction.

“I was thinkin’ you might could retire soon.”

Ah, there is nothing like a good West Texas accent, and Easley especially brings Brett’s to life by dropping the ‘g’ from gerunds and popping in a “might could” here and there. Even Lauren, who often sounds a bit hoity-toity, lets a Texanism slip in from time to time. Stephanie actually asks Lauren about this phenomenon towards the end of Higher Love, and gets a good explanation, which shows openness and growth in the relationship between Lauren and Stephanie, leaving readers hopeful they’ll get even closer.

One of the most raw and realistic sub-plots that runs through both books is Lauren’s alcoholism. Even after twenty-five years, when Lauren struggles, she grounds herself with AA meetings. “Newcomer meetings were a good reminder of my tortured journey to sobriety” — and a good reminder to readers that it’s a forever commitment to stay sober, and we should show those who are fighting that battle some grace.

I purchased the Kindle copy of Higher Love the day it published, but the covers of all of Easley’s books are so beautiful, I’d want them on my shelf. The story was repetitive at times, particularly in reference to Ben and Alain, and I did find more typos than I’d expect in a final copy for purchase, but none of it took me out of the story much. For me, this is an exception to the norm when I read and another marker of Easley’s skill in crafting an engaging story.

I’ll be exploring other novels by Joanne Easley while awaiting what she next writes. She’s on my author to watch list.

SYNOPSIS

Gloria Bachman has pivoted so many times this year she has whiplash. Now, in the middle of winter and drenched in Mexican sunshine at a five-star resort, she has a role to play: Mason Lassiter’s “arm candy” in a sting to nab his not-actually-dead first wife, Patsy. It didn’t make any sense to her either, but who argues with government officials offering an expense-paid trip and a reason for a new beach wardrobe?

With Patsy leading resort security, FBI agents, and Mason on a merry chase, Gloria knows that if you want to catch a woman of a certain age, you have to think like a woman of a certain age. Thankfully, she’s got the credentials.

If only she could understand the other people in her life—particularly Gardner Rogers. Gloria returns home to Comfort, Texas with a ring, a pressing need to organize her house, and a custom order of Sweeties signature truffles to be delivered to White House chefs. When her business partner embarks on last-minute travel plans, one of her best friends announces a retirement, romances bloom from unlikely sources, and Gardner and her ex-husband, Harry Rogers, come unhinged—quite publicly—it all forces Gloria to face her strangest challenges yet.

This final book in the Comfort and Joy trilogy weaves happy endings for the townsfolk that readers have come to love and just deserts for those they don’t. It’s Kimberly Fish at her finest and a treasure for brave people who don’t retire quietly.

REVIEW
HALL WAYS REVIEW: What fun it was to return to Comfort, Texas, via Kimberly Fish's final installment in the Comfort and Joy trilogy! Home to Comfort illustrates what Fish does best in her storytelling: bring people and places to life with humor and panache.

My prior escapes to Comfort, a real town nestled in the Texas Hill Country, have been via the five books in the Comfort Stories, Fish's other series set there. Yes, I jumped in and started with the third book this time around! I am certain there's a literary law against doing this, but go ahead and cuff me. No regrets. I already knew the town vibe, and I had no trouble sinking right into the story where, as expected, everything and everyone felt familiar. And wonderfully relatable.

"Why, oh why, had she not chosen the pedicure, or salt sauna, or even the gentle e-Bike ride over the hills? No. She had to prove to herself she could be the person who exercised while traveling. Foolishness!”

Early in Home to Comfort, I knew that main character Gloria Bachman was my kind of gal. She's a sixty-year-old woman who's been knocked down, gotten up, rebuilt her life, rebuilt her career, and has found the man of her dreams. She's smart, witty, fashionable, and has a knack for getting embroiled in shenanigans that will have readers giggling and gasping. But readers also spend a lot of time inside Gloria's head and are privy to her fears, self-doubt, and insecurities, and we learn how she sees herself and life around her. Gloria is such an authentic character.

"Gloria's heart flipped upside down and spilled worries all over the lovely Saltillo tiles."

Not only does Kimberly Fish write authentic and engaging characters (and mercy, there are a lot of them in Home to Comfort), she has a flair for crafting sentences that breathe life into her scenes. The inclusion of colloquial phrases, like: "From your mouth to God's ears," further enriches Fish's storytelling. This serves readers well with multiple plotlines that move from a Mexican seaside resort to the Texas Hill Country; truly, there are three delicious tales in one. I'm not kidding about the deliciousness factor -- the descriptions of drinks and foods and oh, the chocolate shop delights still have me drooling.

Though I had no trouble understanding the goings-on despite having not read the first two installments in this series, I do believe it would be beneficial to read the series in order. This would surely allow readers more insight into Gloria's nemesis Gardner, better visualize the wide circle of Gloria's friends and frenemies, experience firsthand the various town crises, and experience with Gloria her path to find peace and happiness in Comfort.

Fish is a gifted storyteller, and Home to Comfort, the Comfort Stories novels, as well as her Misfits and Millionaires series are endlessly entertaining. My only quibble with Home to Comfort is that it contains a considerable number of typos that make it feel like it lacked a final proofreading. I realize that many (most?) readers' eyes fly right past these kinds of errors, so it won't affect their reading experience, and admittedly, I am jealous. But for me, it's a huge distraction from an otherwise stellar story.

If you are drawn to stories of second-chance romance, robust characters, cozy mysteries, competent women, and armchair travel, then check out the Comfort and Joy series, and start with the first book, Sweet Comfort. I'll meet you there.

SYNOPSIS
*spoiler alert*
“Tough Trail Home is a delightful read about a family coming to terms with each other and their new lives.” –Pamela Stockwell, author of A Boundless Place

The Dunwhitty family is flying high until their carefully choreographed life falls apart during the 2008 Great Recession. Lisa's firm goes belly-up while Michael's shuts down after selling faulty heart valves. Desperate, Lisa insists they regroup by seeking refuge in rural Central Texas on land she inherits from a distant relative she barely knows.

It's not the ranch Lisa remembers, but a ramshackle money pit. Michael and their teenage son, Andrew, despise the place. Only their young daughter, Jessica, is happy. After a bitter argument, Michael moves to the city. As his job search drags on, Lisa begins to plant roots; friendships develop for her and the children. With the help of Michael's parents, her neighbor, and the remains of her savings, she begins to return the ranch to its former glory. The couple continues to drift further apart, Michael turning his attention to another woman.

A call from the sheriff's department that their son is in custody jolts the couple to the core. Can they repair their relationship for the sake of their son? Or is it too late?

REVIEW

HALL WAYS AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: First thing's first -- I felt the need to put a *spoiler alert* on the synopsis above because there are events that I would have rather discovered by reading. Either way, Tough Trail Home is a great choice for readers who enjoy character-driven stories of resilience, determination, and healing.

What I enjoyed the most about Tough Trail Home is that it places readers in small-town Texas and highlights both the perks and challenges of living there. However, everything is intensified because of how our main character, Lisa Dunwhitty, and her two children are thrown into living on a derelict ranch outside La Grange, Texas. It's a riches to rags story, but much like in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, our characters learn that riches come in a lot of different forms.

"To top it off, the store here only sells Folgers coffee."

The family is accustomed to a life of luxury before the (million dollar Persian) rug is suddenly and unceremoniously pulled out from under them. Watching them in turn cling to and let go of the finer things in life is sometimes painful, sometimes refreshing, and sometimes humorous. But being along for the ride as each of them realizes what's valuable is the payoff in the aptly named Tough Trail Home.

Readers must suspend their disbelief a bit, and they'll also have to restrain themselves from wanting to punch the page when it comes to some of the characters' behaviors and thought processes (I'm mostly talking to you, Michael). But any of their shortcomings are offset by the most wonderful and intriguing character, neighbor Carl, who is a saint and a savior to the Dunwhitty family. If only we all had a Carl in our life.

The bones of Tough Trail Home are solid, and Watts is clearly an excellent storyteller. I didn't love Lisa's obsessing over her ten-year-old daughter's weight or the ubiquitous but incorrect, "Everyone in Texas has firearms," statement from friend Dorothy. But the other side of that is that Watts evoked reactions, and that's the mark of a great writer. From a technical standpoint, there are a few typos, some inconsistencies with diction, and some unnecessary scenes and details. And the ending is so abrupt that I thought pages were missing. Additional editing and a few more details to reasonably wrap up the story would have taken this novel to the next level for me.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: I listened to Tough Trail Home at 1.2x instead of regular speed, and narrator Danielle Mors did an admirable job with the Texas accent and distinguishing between character voices. Her pacing was consistent, but there were enough peculiar or incorrect pronunciations and odd inflections that it was taking me out of the story, so I stopped reading with my ears and switched to reading with my eyes. I am un unusually nitpicky reader, so I imagine many of the things that caught my ear would pass by others, and when the narration was good, it was very good.

Tough Trail Home shows how hard it is to find strength when the hits keep coming. It's also a reminder that turning to friends and family and the healing balm of nature will often provide the grounding and stability to put priorities in perspective. The ending leaves readers to create the next chapters for the Dunwhitty family, but it also leaves Marie Watts an opportunity for a sequel. Fingers crossed.

HALL WAYS REVIEW
Oh, how I needed to read a book like this right now! THIS TIME AROUND was so entertaining and such a page-turner that I almost missed a doctor's appointment and then nearly died because I sat reading in my turned-off car, windows up, in my garage (in June, in Texas) for an hour to finish the book.

Okay, that last part's a little dramatic because it was an overcast day and we'd had rain and it was only about 80 degrees in the garage, BUT, I had been catapulted back into the '90s via Kimberly Packard's tale -- and there was drama in spades there. Sometimes it was hilarious, sometimes it was heartbreaking, and as the story began to wind to a close, I was distressed by main character Josie's precarious position and decision before her. Seriously distressed! Between some of the chapters, I might have texted the kids to tell them I loved them.
"Are the words of my story fading? Is the great author of the universe furiously backspacing to rewrite my story?"
This is not my *official* book review; or maybe it is? In either case, this is me needing to say how much I adored this book and that despite my being vocal about how I REALLY DON'T LIKE ROMANCES, I now have a book boyfriend named Daniel. We'll say it's the forty-seven-year-old Daniel, though, so it's not creepy.

Well done, Kimberly Packard. Well done.

Even with all her experience, Gloria Bachman, retired banker and candy entrepreneur, didn’t see this coming.

Sweeties, the beloved Comfort chocolate shop, was ready for its cameo in advertising extraordinaire Jazzy Mezcal’s famous travel and food show! Comfort town folks had worked hard all summer to get their shops Hallmark-movie ready. On the eve of the TV crews overtaking the town, Gloria’s Chamber of Commerce welcome party gets drenched in a wicked rainstorm. Locals call it a “blue norther,” and a dreaded agent of change. Flooding seems like the worst of their problems until the celebrity TV host turns up dead.

In shock, Gloria’s friends turn to her to figure out who could be responsible for such a disaster. With the TV crew and guests in town for the 8th Street Market’s annual shopping event, suspects are endless. Reluctant to get involved, Gloria would much rather focus on the delicious romance with Mason Lassiter. And she would if a frenemy from Kerrville didn’t haunt her every step. Now as Gardner Rogers treads on her turf, everything feels suspicious.

With all eyes on Gloria to find the truth behind Jazzy Mezcal’s untimely death, she indulges her curiosity for problem solving while trying to disguise how unsure she is about the future with her boyfriend. Disruption in Mason’s world, mayhem in Comfort, and one epic chocolate disaster rouse Gloria to action and make her decide what’s worth fighting for. All she can say for sure, is that no one is finding any comfort in Comfort.

Welcome to the hometown everyone wants to call their own.

Gloria Bachman, a retired bank executive, has eight weeks to flip a location on Comfort’s High Street into a boutique chocolate shop. Defying expectations for “women of a certain age,” Gloria rediscovers talents and a sharpening of skills. If only she could read people as well as she does a spreadsheet. Even with the renovation in good hands, the subsequent struggle to name the shop brings Gloria and her business partner into conflict with a shady citizen. While Gloria is capable of remaining in her retirement rut while opening a business, two competing social groups try to lure her into their networks, causing Gloria to wonder if she ever knew Comfort at all. A murder rocks the community and revives investigative instincts honed by years in the banking industry.

Mason Lassiter, a disgraced CEO, has his own dramas to escape and the offbeat town seems the perfect place to recover his self-esteem. What was to be a quick reversal of fortunes becomes a quest to right a deeply felt injustice. Fascinated by the women driving the energy of Comfort, he extends his stay to find out why the small town is the backdrop to their best tales. Tangling with his neighbor Gloria becomes his favorite pastime and the key to unlocking the mystery of his past—if he can convince her to trust him.

Chocolate and joy become the glue bringing an unlikely cast together, which just might change Gloria’s and Mason’s course for the better. With characters familiar from previous Comfort novels and introducing fresh names, Sweet Comfort will entertain those who like their stories seasoned with coziness and sweet, second chances.
