SYNOPSIS
Paris, 1895. When a cancan dancer at the Moulin Rouge falls to her death from the top of one of Montmartre’s highest staircases, the police dismiss it as an accident. But, Madeleine was one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s favorite models, and the artist is certain she was murdered. Enter Depression-era detective Steven Blackwell and 21st-century journalist Olivia Watson, who travel back in time to Paris to hunt down the killer. Before long, they learn that a second dancer—a ballerina and favorite model of painter Edgar Degas—has died. Two dancers dead in two weeks. Two artists grieving. Is the killer targeting young dancers, or does this case involve the enigmatic Paris art world?

From the moment Steven and Olivia arrive, Steven is out of his element. The small-town cop has no idea what techniques the French police use in 1895. Worse, he has no official status to investigate murder in one of the world’s largest cities. The sleuths soon discover disturbing secrets at the Paris Ballet. And when Olivia insists on going undercover to visit a suspect’s house alone, Steven fears he’s made the biggest mistake of his life.

Travel back in time with Steven and Olivia, as they enter the back-stabbing world of dance in one of the world’s greatest cities. Murder at the Moulin Rouge is their most daring and dangerous case to date.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

Hall Ways Review: In Murder at the Moulin Rouge, Carol Pouliot masterfully pulls readers this way and that, convincing – and misleading – us, right up to the surprising, spectacular end. I cannot wait to go back to the beginning of this engaging, clever time-travel series and binge-read forward while I wait for the next installment.

Although Murder at the Moulin Rouge is the fifth book in the Blackwell & Watson Time-Travel Mystery series, it’s the first that I’ve read. Right from the start, I appreciated that the author provides an extensive “Cast of Characters” whom readers will meet in the book. Honestly, I only rarely had to consult it because the author didn’t overwhelm me with them, and I could easily keep them straight. Perhaps it helps that practically everyone is a suspect at one time or another.

As a lifelong Francophile (with an upcoming trip to France – SQUEEEEE), I absolutely loved being immersed in Paris. Even though this was the 1895 version of Paris, Carol Pouliot’s richly detailed descriptions are a reminder that the city is timeless. Numerous places I most recently saw in 2014, aren’t much different from the 1895 version described, so it feels realistic and evocative. Plus, the inclusion of French traditions, foods, and words lends authenticity to the story, and Pouliot does it in an organic way so that no translations are needed. Further enriching the story is the sprinkling of interesting historical factoids that are sure to pique readers’ interest. (The fascination with the Paris Morgue? The slanted floors at the Opรฉra? Who knew?) As a bonus, there’s a “Note from the Author” section at the end that separates fact from fiction, and it even includes links for further exploration.

“It had been worth all of it just to spend this one evening with the woman who was going to become his adored mother.” – Adult Stephen Blackwell, in 1895, speaking of Evangeline, with whom he’d just spent an evening and who would give birth to Stephen sometime in the next several years.

To say it’s complicated is an understatement. Reading the first few chapters of Murder at the Moulin Rouge, without having the benefit of the information from the four prior books in the series, I stalled because my head was spinning with loads of logistical questions. But, that’s on me for being late to the series party. By actively suspending my disbelief and giving the author the benefit of the doubt that all has been explained if one starts at the beginning, I was released to enjoy the book as the superior stand-alone mystery it is.

I would be remiss if I didn’t say bien fait, Mme Pouliot, for providing readers a cleanly edited novel. I didn’t notice even a single misplaced accent aigu, and that’s refreshing. Beyond the obvious lack of lead-up details, my only regret starting with book five is that I’ve not had the background and build-up to the relationship between the main characters, Stephen and Olivia. As such, there’s a part towards the end that’s a bit spoiler-ish, but it’s also quite clear that there will be more to come.

Murder at the Moulin Rouge is a well-researched historical mystery with sharp writing that gives readers sneak peeks into the lives of both Paris’s upper echelon and the working class, with a bit of social commentary on each. The quick escalation to the story’s surprising big reveal kept me rapidly flipping pages to a quick but satisfying resolution in this oh-so-French novel. Magnifique!

I voluntarily reviewed this book and received an e-ARC from the author through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

ABOUT THE BOOK: A hurricane is brewing, a deadly plague is spreading, and time isn’t what we think it is.

Ronnie Andrews knows he’s here. Jeffrey Brennan, the ex-boyfriend who has haunted her past, is lurking somewhere in the Puerto Rican hospital, waiting for his moment to strike. As bubonic plague fears sweep the island, the hospital descends into chaos—staff flee, Homeland Security locks down the facility, and a bioterror threat escalates. But Ronnie fears something even worse: that Jeffrey will use this moment of turmoil to send her hurtling through time once again.

The damage to her brain from previous time-travel events is already severe—one more jump could destroy her. But Jeffrey needs Ronnie and Mike gone before they expose his time travel device to the government.

Meanwhile, Mike—barely clinging to consciousness after a devastating mudslide crash—is about to be put into a medically induced coma. But he knows one thing: if he falls asleep, he may never wake up again. With time slipping through their fingers, can Ronnie and Mike stop Jeffrey before it's too late?

Fracturing Time is the adrenaline-pumping fourth book in the Stealing Time series, packed with high-stakes suspense, time travel twists, and heart-pounding action.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Reading Fracturing Time is like watching a juggling act, where author KJ Waters keeps multiple characters, multiple timelines, and multiple settings orbiting around her main character, Ronnie, in this action-packed fourth book in the Stealing Time series.

Having not read any of the prior books in the series, I struggled a bit to understand the relationships and events that led up to Fracturing Time. Also, I imagine having been alongside the characters, living the moments with them from the get-go, would make a reader feel more connected and invested, and even repelled. Waters provides readers with a few good bring-to-dates and insights along the way, which helps. But, I won't recommend it as a stand-alone book. Instead, I recommend the series because you'll want to know all the delicious details, start to finish.

Stephanie McKay studied the threatening sky, bracing herself for Orlando’s daily summer ritual, those few hours when Mother Nature threw her tantrum.”

Waters’s own experiences living in Florida surely aided her in creating such accurate and realistic situations for readers to experience (vicariously, thank goodness). However, it’s clear the author has done copious amounts of research into historical events, law enforcement procedures, medical conditions, and of course, weather events.  Sometimes scenes went on a bit long and one seemed intentionally ghoulish to me, but they definitely illustrated the deep research.

The characters in Fracturing Time are fleshed out and are written so that we hear the lilt in Steph's and Ian's voices, the seething in Jeffery's, and the time stamp of 1752 in Appleton's, to name a few. This lends an extra level of authenticity to the characters and the intriguing, even outrageous subplots in which they are involved.

I read an ARC of Fracturing Time and found some editing issues, but I assume those have been cleaned up in the final version available for sale. For this new-to-the-series reader, some re-reading of passages was required to try to grasp what was happening, which is pretty mind blowing and imaginative; but it works. Plus, having scenes told from multiple viewpoints (including one from a highly-medicated character) gives us a better understanding of the bigger picture. BONUS: if like me you love when a cover and book title tie-in to the story, you'll be pleased.

In the “A Letter to My Readers” section at the end of the book, author KJ Waters says, “I’ve wrapped up the storyline in the fourth book in the series, but I have at least two others in the works. I’m also going to write some spin-offs.” Hooray! In Fracturing Time, there are definitely some set-ups for more books. While Waters is writing, I’ll backtrack to book one and read current to be ready for more adventures. Standing by!

SYNOPSIS

Most of us would jump at a chance for a do-over of our teenage years...but what if our worst mistakes lead to our happily-ever-after?

Josie Gardner’s life revolves around her amazing children and her career. But, when her husband threatens to take her kids in their divorce, and the business she’s put most of her passion, time, and money into building is at risk of failing, a panic attack shatters her grip on reality…and the present.

Josie wakes up in her teenage bedroom, thirty years in the past. She’s forced to relive her emotionally devastating senior year of high school — the year she cut her father out of her life, caused one of her best friends to sever ties, and turned away the boy she loved.

Determined to get back to her children in her own time, Josie tries to fix the mistakes she made, in the hope that righting wrongs will send her back to the present. But when tempted by her high school crush, Josie faces the real possibility of losing her future for good.

Would you take a second chance for love…even if it meant losing everything?

HALL WAYS REVIEW
Oh, how I needed to read a book like this right now! THIS TIME AROUND was so entertaining and such a page-turner that I almost missed a doctor's appointment and then nearly died because I sat reading in my turned-off car, windows up, in my garage (in June, in Texas) for an hour to finish the book.

Okay, that last part's a little dramatic because it was an overcast day and we'd had rain and it was only about 80 degrees in the garage, BUT, I had been catapulted back into the '90s via Kimberly Packard's tale -- and there was drama in spades there. Sometimes it was hilarious, sometimes it was heartbreaking, and as the story began to wind to a close, I was distressed by main character Josie's precarious position and decision before her. Seriously distressed! Between some of the chapters, I might have texted the kids to tell them I loved them.
"Are the words of my story fading? Is the great author of the universe furiously backspacing to rewrite my story?"
This is not my *official* book review; or maybe it is? In either case, this is me needing to say how much I adored this book and that despite my being vocal about how I REALLY DON'T LIKE ROMANCES, I now have a book boyfriend named Daniel. We'll say it's the forty-seven-year-old Daniel, though, so it's not creepy.

Well done, Kimberly Packard. Well done.

After a shocking courtroom tragedy, a disturbed Vietnam veteran and the vindictive judge who sent him to prison become an unlikely pair of time travelers in a chaotic multiverse. The fallen angel who rescues them wants to guide them to a radiant new life. But first they must return to the scene of a ghastly crime.

Billy Worster was a naรฏve teenager ill-prepared for the gruesome realities of war. The sole survivor of a deadly massacre in a Vietnamese jungle, he avoided certain death only because he ran away when the shooting started. Riddled with guilt, he comes home to a dusty Texas farm with post-traumatic stress disorder and the crazy notion that he can fly in and out of parallel worlds.

As Billy struggles with addiction and questions his sanity, he is arrested on a drug charge and ends up in the courtroom of Judge Madeline Johnston, a bitter old judge tormented by a dark secret surrounding her father’s death. She callously tosses Billy into prison, but when a greedy executor files a lawsuit to steal his inherited land, Billy is hauled back to her courtroom in chains, where a stunning twist of fate launches them into the sky on an odyssey of discovery and healing.

Spanning forty years from the jungles of Vietnam through infinite, parallel worlds, Rip the Sky examines how the power of forgiveness can lead us toward a better life, no matter how many worlds we may live in.

Mark Packard spent the last 38 years as a trial attorney and is now retired from the courtroom and working as a mediator. In a life before lawyering he was a journalist and regrets waiting far too long before returning to his roots to write his first novel, Rip the Sky. Though he knows he should have jumped off the merry-go-round years ago, he hopes to hang around long enough to craft a few more tales. Connect with the author:

But evil forces seek the power of the compass, including a monstrous, shape-shifting dragon from a different age. Can the compass protect Albert from such villainy?

PRAISE FOR EINSTEIN'S COMPASS:
"This is an amazing story. Everyone should thoroughly enjoy reading it. I was impressed with how the authors managed to incorporate the known information on the lost continent of Atlantis, Light Workers, souls, reincarnation, time travel and the early years of Albert Einstein before he became famous, into a mesmerizing work of fiction readers will have difficulty putting down.
--Doug Simpson, Author of We Lived in Atlantis

"I could not stop reading this book. I read at stop lights and in line at the grocery store. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough." --- award winning children's author, Lisa Reinicke

This is highly recommended for those who enjoy a saga of good vs. evil that spans tens of thousands of years, for readers who devour novels that blend history and fantasy, and for anyone who is simply looking for a unique story that they will not want to put down.
-- Author Jacqui Murray, Ask A Tech Teacher
The weaving of the story between the religion realm and Albert’s world is a captivating tale that keeps the reader’s attention. The good and evil of the timeless religious realm is like watch a chess match to see who outwits whom … I hope there is a next book somewhere in my future.
