HALL WAYS REVIEW: It had been a while since I read a graphic novel, and I must say that jumping back in with Kasey Iris’s Ghoul was a delight. Iris is both author and illustrator and excels on both fronts.

The color scheme in GHOUL (mauve/rose) was a great choice for conveying the often-melancholy storyline of a teenager Lyn’s grief in losing her best friend to suicide. Her parents recognize a change is needed and move the family overseas, to the US, in hopes that Lyn can get a fresh start.

In their new apartment building, Lyn not only finds a new friend (Imaginary? Real?) and a bit of intrigue in the rumors surrounding a neighbor who may—or may not—have killed his wife and son. (Interesting side note from this reader who’s considerably older than the target audience: apparently, we don’t say “killed” or “dead;” we say “unalived” or “unalive.”)

Being out of practice with graphic novels, I had a little difficulty following the flow of the text bubbles, especially with the Tagalog translations sprinkled throughout. But kudos to the author for corralling all those terms in a glossary of terms at the end. Fortunately, the expressive and evocative illustrations assure that readers are never lost or confused. And the spooky, spiritual, mysterious plot is sure to keep them fully engaged and turning pages.

There are surprises and plot twists that both charm and satisfy, and the bonus materials at the end are a real plus.  Included at the end are a fab playlist, a mini-graphic novel that the author created nearly ten years ago, and some character sketches the artist created for GHOUL.

GHOUL is a truly entertaining and thoughtful book that belongs in school libraries and counselors’ offices. It leaves readers hopeful and happy. I look forward to what’s next from this talented author/illustrator.

Thank you to the publisher, Top Shelf Productions, for providing me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review--the only kind I give.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: What a first chapter! From the very beginning, I was hooked on Death Grip and all it’s action-packed, page-turning fabulousness. I devoured this book, flipping digital pages so fast that my eReader may have overheated. I was so involved in the story that I barely took any notes; this says a lot about the writing. (And it’s also a nod to the outstanding editing. Bliss.) I didn’t want to get taken out of this story for even a minute.

Even though Death Grip is the fourth and final (?) installment in Travis Tougaw’s Marcotte and Collins Investigative Thrillers series, and it's the first book I've read in it, there is never a hiccup jumping in here. The characters’ relationships are established, but instead of being confusing, it makes the reader want to go back to their roots in prior installments.

Interestingly, I’ve recently read two other new releases with a Montana setting, like in Death Grip, and I’m wondering if it’s a trend. Whether it is or isn’t, I can see why authors would set a book there. I’ve never been, but Tougaw’s rich descriptions make the landscape’s beauty and perils pop from the pages. He’s also adept at writing realistic characters to love and loathe while also cleverly steering readers’ suspicions so that we’re on the fence about a character or two. Early on, my spider senses were tingling at the introduction of one person, and I wasn’t wrong in guessing that one was the baddie. But how the story unfolded, and the twisted mind and deeds of the perpetrator, had my spine tingling, too.

With the sharp writing, terrifically twisty plot, and excellent characterization found within the pages of Death Grip, readers need to prepare for an intense and wild ride that will likely lead them to binge reading the full series. *Says one of those readers.* Highly recommend.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: WOW! Spectacular story, spectacular writing, and A Family of Good Women by Teddy Jones gives me all the feels.

Reading A Family of Good Women was just the boost I needed as a reader; how amazing it is to seamlessly enjoy and get lost in the world a talented writer creates. And this world, set in the late 1920s (but spanning years earlier), is intriguing.

“The scenery here—oil derricks and shotgun houses with nary a tree in sight unless you count the mesquites out on the edge of town—was different from the green lushness of Central Texas. The Texas Panhandle takes some getting used to.”

Living in the Panhandle area of Texas ain’t for sissies, even in modern times, but in 1929, it was even tougher, especially in the rough and often lawless oil boom towns. And for twenty-three-year-old Imogene Good, an educated woman serving meals to the oilfield workers, it’s even rougher. But this gal is no shrinking violet, even when some of the men try to push her around and threaten violence. She uses her smarts, makes connections, and takes control through her wit, spirit, and spunk. She’s a strong woman, but she also recognizes her vulnerabilities, and that – along with her sassy red shoes – make her pop to life.

“I love that time between sleep and waking where I see the past and the future all together, where ideas drop into my mind like feathers drifting on a breeze from a cloudless sky.”

In A Family of Good Women, the writing is dreamy, lyrical, and evocative.  I finished reading this book nearly six weeks ago, but the story remains fresh in my mind.  I also learned lots of new-to-me (but old) terminology, and the Author’s Note refers to the Women’s Commonwealth of Belton, Texas, which inspired the author to weave the tale that ultimately became the book -- and sent me down a researching rabbit hole to learn more.

I feel like the characters, along with the lovable dog, Big Guy, must still be doing their thing out in the Panhandle, in some kind of time warp where it’s 1930 or so. That’s the power of Teddy Jones’s writing. I highly recommend snagging a copy of A Family of Good Women and indulging in fascinating historical fiction and immersing yourself in engaging storytelling that’s sprinkled with a side of sass.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Oh, what a delight it is to read 9 Little People! And it's double-y delightful to read it with my observant five-year-old granddaughter, Amelia. While we did have a misfire trying to read the ARC on Kindle (formatting was awful), and she was frustrated at having to read it on my iPad via the NetGalley app, (MIMI, why don't you have this REAL book to hold???), we had a wonderful time reading together.

In 9 Little People Martina Stuhlberger's soft, expressive illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to Regina Feldmann's rhythmic and rhyming text. The combination invites young readers to truly study the pages. My young reader made sure to verify that there are indeed nine little people on each page, and when there wasn't, she was quick to explain that some kids have siblings.
"9 little people make big plans together. 9 little people stay best friends forever."
Since the story progresses from when the babies are bulges in their mommies' tummies to when they're independent children, there are even more opportunities for page-studying and discussion. In 9 Little People, readers see children and their adults who celebrate what they have in common and their unique connections that bond them together.

Adults will likely find the author's note in the "Dear Reader" section of interest. It explains the impetus for writing the book, and it's a reminder to place faith and hope in our younger generations.

When Amelia and I finished 9 Little People (the second time), I asked her to give me a thumbs up or a thumbs down to buying the hardcover edition. She gave me TWO thumbs up! Can't get a better recommendation than that.

I received a copy of the book and reviewed this book as part of Camp NetGalley.

THE RISE OF THE MAD MARCH
by Robert Espenscheid, Jr.

New Adult / Coming of Age / Friendship
Publisher: Stoney Creek Publishing
Pages: 374
Publication Date: May 9, 2025

SYNOPSIS

This one is for all the rock bands who never headlined the big stage, who never needed protection getting to the limo, who never made any money, who never got signed, who had no answer to the cry of “why aren’t you guys famous?” It’s for those who wrote killer songs never heard on the radio, who never made a Rolling Stone cover—or even a mention inside. It’s for those whose collars were always blue, who were promised this and wound up with that, who always opened and never closed.

America, 1973. Christine on lead, Henry on rhythm, Gretchen on bass and Melissa on drums. A chaotic rise, fighting amongst themselves, battling self-destruction, finding their sound, learning to trust, finding a helping hand, overcoming convention (girls can’t play guitar) to become one band, on one tour, for one month – New York to LA and all the stories in between.

HALL WAYS AUDIOBOOK REVIEW. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series is my go-to happy place for when I want to escape an often overwhelming world and have a reliably pleasant, calm, violence-free, & stress-free reading experience. There's always a mystery afoot, though this time, Mma Ramotswe is supposed to be taking her first ever holiday and leaving Mma Makutsi in charge of investigations. Easier said than done!

I found The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine so relatable -- not only because Mma Ramotswe is a "traditionally built woman" like myself, but because I am having my own discomfort with being on a different kind of holiday: I sold my business and am retired (for the time being). Just like Mma Ramotswe, I am not quite sure what to do with my time and am unreasonably concerned that business can be handled without my being in the middle of it! Ha!

As usual, readers can look forward to Violet Sepotho (boooo, hissssss) rearing her ugly head, beautiful descriptions of Botswana, thought-provoking insights from many characters, and of course, some dialogue courtesy of Mma Makutsi's shoes. Oh -- and plenty of bush tea and cake.

There are now some twenty-four full novels in this series, and I've read (or read-with-my-ears) nineteen or so of them and loved them all. I think it's important to read the first ten or so in order so one is up-to-speed with the backgrounds and relationships of the regularly occurring characters. But I've been hopping around within the second dozen and had no issues figuring out what's what.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Lisette Lesat, who has been the narrator on all of the audiobooks, again performs to perfection. She navigates the different characters, whether male or female, young or old, without a glitch and her pacing is excellent. My comfort spot is listening at 1.2x speed, and I listened straight through while wearing my domestic goddess cape at home for a day.

Action packed? Nope. Brain straining? Nope. Pure enjoyment? Every. Single. Time.

Zada is a camel with a treasure trove of stories to tell. She’s won camel races for the royal Pasha of Smyrna, crossed treacherous oceans to new land, led army missions with her best camel friend by her side, and outsmarted a far too pompous mountain lion.

But those stories were from before. Now, Zada wanders the desert as the last camel in Texas. But she’s not alone. Two tiny kestrel chicks are nestled in the fluff of fur between her ears—kee-killy-keeing for their missing parents—and a dust storm the size of a mountain is taking Zada on one more grand adventure. And it could lead to this achy old camel’s most brilliant story yet.

HALL WAYS BLOG: MINI-REVIEW:

What a fabulous escape it is to spend time lost in these pages with Zada and her stories. Appelt weaves a wonderful set of tales within tales that will not only educate but will also captivate readers. She voices Zada as a contemporary-sounding character, which will appeal to the intended audience and elicit chuckles from readers of all ages. Lyrical, magical, and whimsical, ONCE UPON A CAMEL is not to be missed.

It Happened in Tuscany ~ Book Blog Tour Audio Book Review & Giveaway!

IT HAPPENED IN TUSCANY
BY GAIL MENCINI
Narrated by Susan Fouche

Book Details:
Genre Adult Fiction (18+), 408 pages
Categories Mainstream Fiction, Historical Fiction
Publisher Capriole Group
Release date Feb 18 2020
Content Rating: PG-13. The novel includes violence in war scenes and non-explicit sex scenes, but not f-words, religious profanities, or crude terms as described.

Book Description:

From the multiple-award-winning author of To Tuscany with Love comes a captivating story of the epic tug of war between honor and duty, the irrepressible power of love, and the concept of family.

In 1945, Will Mills and his fellow soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division scaled Italy’s treacherous Riva Ridge in the frigid night to break through the nearly impenetrable German line of defense. Severely wounded, Will was rescued by Italian partisans and one, a beautiful girl, tended his injuries until he had the strength to rejoin the U.S. troops.

Tormented and haunted by his decisions and actions during wartime, Will knows he has unfinished missions in Italy to complete. The passage of time and years of carrying this unfulfilled need have molded Will into a bitter, angry man.

Seventy-five years later, Will’s spunky thirty-two-year-old neighbor, Sophie Sparke, faces disaster in her life. Everything is going wrong—her job, her love life, even her dog. Part of the problem is that confident and fiercely independent Sophie lets her quick mouth get her into trouble.

Grouchy, mean-spirited Will finagles Sophie into traveling with him to Tuscany to find the partisan who saved his life. Will also secretly hopes to confront the demons his wartime actions created. Sophie and Will comb enchanting Tuscan hill towns on an improbable and unfolding mission with few clues to aid them. Will’s passionate tenacity drives their quest and in the process exposes their darkest secrets. The journey alters the course of their lives, and Will and Sophie find more than they had imagined in the hills of Tuscany.

Audio Book Review:

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audio book review: From descriptions of the picturesque landscapes, the nuances of the people, and the rituals of enjoying food and wine, clearly, author Gail Mencini knows and loves Italy. At times, listening to It Happened in Tuscany felt almost like a travelogue, with the richness of the country and the culture of Italy and Italians bubbling out from the story.

“Sunlight filled the space with light and promise.”

It is Mencini’s glorious descriptions that readers will find their wanderlust activated, and that was enough to keep me listening. Aside from the beginning of the story, when we’re on the battleground with young Will during WWII, there isn’t a lot of action; however, the story moves steadily in a direction where we know there will be a resolution, and we’re pretty sure of what it will be given the number of bread crumbs the author drops along the way to lead us there.  As the finer points are fleshed-out, readers really won’t mind that the resolutions aren’t realistic. We’re just rooting for Sophie and Will to find closure and feel complete.

An interesting and unexpected characteristic of Sophie is that she’s an admitted liar. Well, maybe a better word is embellisher. She recognizes that she does this, and even though it gets her into a pickle (or bruschetta) sometimes, she doesn’t really try to stop the habit. It provides some humor, but it’s also sad as it shows her lack of self-worth and self-confidence after a former boyfriend had demoralized her. Happily, she is working on overcoming the negativity from that relationship, but the lying doesn’t seem to be something she deems needing to fix.

More than anything, what makes It Happened in Tuscany work for readers is the unlikely friendship between Will and Sophie. It’s such a contentious relationship, with a real push-pull of aggravating each other and clinging to each other through empathy and sympathy. Like Sophie, readers can’t bear the thought of Will being disappointed in his pursuit of finding love lost. We’re invested. We want love to find a way. For everyone.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Narrator Susan Fouche, did a good job in performing the voices from dramatic-American Sophie, to crotchety old Will, to the numerous male and female characters who speak English as a second language. The only uneven voicing was of Joe, an American with a sometimes-British accent and/or a flair for also having an Italian accent. So perhaps that was more a difficulty in giving the author’s description a voice. My Goldilocks tendencies did come out as I found the narration too slow at regular speed, but too fast at 1.25x. (Why oh why won’t Audible give us smaller increments like Authors Direct?)

I’ll be watching for other titles by Gail Mencini, and I’d have no hesitation to again read with my ears. But, the book ends with some of Sophie’s favorite recipes, which lends itself better to having the book in print because DROOL.

Thank you to iRead Book Tours and the author for providing me a free download code in exchange for my honest opinion -- the only kind I give.
