About Driftless Spirits

Charlotte Burke can’t shake her recurring dream.

Over and over again she dreams of finding a mysterious journal on a candlelit desk while wandering through a strange house in the middle of the night. Every dream has shown her a framed picture of an old woman sitting at the same desk, except the latest version. Last night, the woman stood and offered Charlotte a keyring. In the morning, Charlotte woke up with her car keys in her hand.

Her best friend is worried but skeptical when Charlotte insists the house is real. The dream is metaphorical, Ivy says, reflecting Charlotte’s restless state. Ivy gifts her a journal and urges her to take the trip her subconscious is demanding before she wakes up behind the wheel. A roadtrip of self-discovery will help Charlotte figure out what she really wants.

Charlotte agrees to the roadtrip but not for Ivy’s reasons. To her, the house, the journal and the woman in her dream are all too real. She sets off to do the impossible. If she can find the house and uncover its secrets in time, she might save far more than her driftless life.

Synopsis:

Forewarned by Tracey S. Phillips

For 15-year-old Daphne Ann Post, the summer of 1976 at Lake Carlson should be filled with new friendships and carefree late-night parties. But something darker lurks beneath the surface—her chilling premonition that someone is going to drown.

Wishing she could escape the shadow of her fractured family and her mother’s too-soon rebound relationship, Daphne reluctantly heads to the family lake house in northern Indiana. The tension with her mother is thick—especially when Daphne is the only one who knows her mom's boyfriend is hiding a dangerous secret. But Daphne’s burden is far heavier than family drama. She harbors an unsettling gift—an ability to know the hidden truths of anyone she touches.

Last year that same intuition failed her when her best friend ignored Daphne’s warning before a tragic accident. Now everyone at school blames Daphne for what happened. Haunted by guilt, Daphne is determined to keep her ability a secret.

When she meets the Vaughans—cool, popular, and effortlessly perfect next-door neighbors—Daphne is drawn into their world, seduced by the thrill of fitting in. Over the summer, whispers of danger from the lake grow louder. Her intuition screams someone will die, and not even the haze of weed can numb her fear.

The clock is ticking. Daphne knows that to save a life, she’ll have to confront her darkest secret and risk losing everything she’s worked so hard for. Can she stop the inevitable without exposing her truth? Or will the lake claim a victim—this time, someone she loves?

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above, and be aware that it's only representative of one aspect of the book. More on that below.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audiobook & eBook Review. Set in 1976, Forewarned places readers deep into what seems to be an idyllic Indiana lakeside summer getaway. But just a scratch at the surface, and it’s clear it’s far from ideal.  Several subplots keep us curious and engaged and anxiously awaiting for what’s promised in the book’s description.

“I can’t drink; quaaludes are the only things that stay down.”

More than anything, Forewarned is a coming-of-age story with a splash of paranormal. It’s a summer-long snapshot of the lives of messed-up and misguided teens and their dysfunctional families – and all the associated drama surrounding that. Forewarned is a juicy read that unfolds much like a daytime TV drama. Think of an HBO’d version of One Life to Live or As the World Turns but with profanity-slinging sexualized primary characters, ages fifteen to twenty-four years old, using and abusing drugs and alcohol. Like I said, juicy, right? Yet, that’s also what makes Forewarned one of these books that I struggle to blanket-recommend for young adults. (I’d categorize it as mature young adult / new adult and older.)

“Icy dread laced with a sense of danger crept up my arms.”

Author Tracey S. Phillips shines in writing descriptive and evocative scenes that make the reader feel the sense of time and place and mood. Though the issues and problems depicted sadly span the ages, the 1976 touches accurately remind readers that Forewarned is not a modern book. For those of us who grew up in the ‘70s, the blasts from the past bring sentimental smiles: the freedom of roaming around, needing a dime for a phone call, hanging out at the A&W, playing Ouija, listening to Casey Kasem on the radio, the introduction of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the country’s bicentennial celebration. For younger readers, the blasts from the past will likely be jaw-dropping and lead to Google searches and Amazon purchases.

In addition to crafting authentic depictions of scene, Phillips writes realistic characters to love and loathe (I’m talking to you, Tony. GRRR! ICKKK!). Though it seems like Forewarned will be Daphne’s story, there are just as many chapters told from Lara’s point of view, and a few from the oldest in this otherwise teen group, twenty-four-year-old Mark. Daphne is the most intriguing of characters and seems a bit of an old soul in how she speaks and thinks. For example, she says things like, it “warmed my buttocks,” which is odd-speak for a fifteen-year-old who hangs out with the fast kids. Yet, as she’s thinking through piano concertos, it also strangely fits. Add to this that Daphne has the gift of clairvoyance (which definitely takes a back seat to the kids-gone-wild plotline) and is riddled with anxiety and anger, she’s fascinating. Fascinating for entirely different reasons is Lara, and watching her make horrible choices and desperately needing attention and affection is like watching a trainwreck. The addition of Mark to the story allows the author to bring yet another subplot to the mix. Through it all, there’s an underlayer of dread that drags on readers as we just know none of this can turn out well.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: I intended to read Forewarned only with my ears because I love audiobooks, but those narrated by the author, like this one, usually have another layer of authenticity. My listening preference didn’t sync with the very slow, steady pace of narration, and I had a hard time finding the right speed to work. I ended up at 1.5x, which made the faster-talking teenagers sound even more natural. However, I discovered an audiobook glitch that left out a significant portion of the book, so I switched to the eBook. I did see a sprinkling of typos and errors in the eBook, which is distracting for me, so I went back and forth between formats, and I’m glad I did. For one, I think the author became more comfortable with her audiobook narration, and the caliber of her delivery was greatly improved and enjoyable by mid-point, making listening at 1.5x perfect. But also, had I just stuck with the eBook, I would have missed hearing the wonderful “End Credits” where the author herself performs Chopin's “Trois Nouvelles ร‰tudes," No. 1! I slowed the listening speed back to 1x for that, and then the audiobook referenced a playlist, and that information sent me back to the eBook. There readers find the “Forewarned Soundtrack,” which ranges from Hall and Oates, The Who, and Steely Dan to Beethoven and Chopin. BONUS: The eBook has a hyperlink to an Amazon Music Playlist. Score! (See the preview below my review! ๐Ÿ ‹๐Ÿ ‹๐Ÿ ‹)

Though the countdown to an eerie ending is slow in coming around, with just less than twenty percent left, the suspense really starts building and like flies on the wall, we can’t stop watching the stories unravel.  Some questions are answered and some situations are neatly or messily resolved, but there are also some loose threads hanging about, along with new information that could take Daphne’s life in a new direction. With Forewarned’s subtitle being “A Daphne Ann Post Novel,” I’m guessing there will be future installments where lingering questions are answered and new adventures await. I’ll be there for it.

I voluntarily reviewed this book and received a print ARC from the author through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

Book Description:

Death wasn’t the end.

More than two hundred and fifty years after the infamous Pendle Witch Trials, the spirits of rival witches Demdike and Chattox remain tethered to their bloodlines—watching, waiting, and bound by unfinished business.

Now, in the late eighteen hundreds, a pragmatic midwife and a troubled young psychic—descendants of the two witches—are drawn into a haunting legacy. An ancient being is stirring—an angry god of the old world, hungry for vengeance and ready to consume the future.

To stop it, the living and the dead must unite, recovering the lost knowledge of their craft. Whilst facing age-old problems and new foes. Some spirits don’t rest easy, and in Pendle, they’re clawing their way back from the past.

Interview with Author Kayleigh Kavanaugh

What genre do you write and why?
Fantasy, historical, and romance. Not necessarily in that order or combined. Because fantasy lets me escape; history fascinates me with the many secrets it hides; romance just makes the world feel like a more hopeful place.

There are many books out there about witches. What makes yours different?
I think that what makes me different is the way I approached the subject. These were women who were victims and purposely targeted for political agendas. I wanted to give them sympathy but to show they were also people—complex and complicated. There are a lot of stories locally about the witches still being around and haunting places. It made me think, “If they were still around, why? And what would they be sticking around for?” Dead witches with ties to the physical world and being guides to their families is definitely a less-explored aspect of the genre.

What made you write a book about the witches in this unusual way?
I really didn’t want to just cover the trials. I wanted what felt natural but could leave a more hopeful ending and possibility for more in the future. Being spirits and reincarnation seemed like a great solution to this problem.

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?
Not exactly. I never suffer from a lack of ideas. It’s usually I’m too ill to think straight or make anything coherent. However, I did hear a great piece of advice. If you are blocked, it’s because the reader in you doesn’t agree with the writer. You need to go a few pages/chapters back and look at your work as a consumer. What part are you rejecting? Rework it. Then it should help release the block.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?
When I was writing a lot a day, I demanded silence, using ear defenders and turning my internet off. Now, when I’m writing less and need to take regular breaks, I typically have music playing in the background. A cup of tea and a bottle of water next to me. There isn’t more than this, maybe asking people not to disturb me, but that's more wishful thinking on my part.

In today’s tech-savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?
The book I wrote in high school was all on paper. I burnt it years later…

Any hobbies?
I like making jewelry. My dexterity isn’t great, so I can’t do it as much or as often as I’d like, but I love giving my family little pieces I’ve made myself.
I love skincare and makeup.
I also regularly to do tea-leaf readings. Though I am also partial to the runes and tarot.

SYNOPSIS

The Charmed Inn Mysteries

Roxy Gleason, an innkeeper by trade and a bibliomancer by birth, has lived in the same small town on the Susquehanna River in Central Pennsylvania for her entire life. Tradition is strong here. Roxy understands the rules and is willing to play by them most of the time. She runs the Charmed Inn, which has been in her family for decades.

The inn is all set to host a writers’ professional business weekend that’s been planned down to the very last hand-folded napkin, and Roxy is ready for the influx of creatives. She knows she’ll have a lot of different and sometimes unusual personalities to deal with, but this is a yearly function, so she’s not expecting anything to go awry.

Her expectations are completely tanked when she finds a dead body on her daily walk by the river’s shore. Owen Schultz had checked in for the conference a few hours ago, and she’d last seen him having tea with her aunt in the dining room.

How did he get down here on the ferry, and who killed him?

Read an excerpt from By Hook or By Book:

Chapter 1

They called him Cheezy Rider—and with good cause.

I stood at the wide front window of the Charmed Inn with a cup of coffee in hand. I watched my great uncle toddling around the corner onto Chestnut Street, pedaling steadily on his old Beach Comber. The picture he made was something to behold. His bright orange vest perfectly matched the small caution flag waving from a tall pole attached to the back of the bike. His silver bullet helmet matched his thinning silver hair peeking out from underneath. But nothing matched his teal and red-flowered Hawaiian shirt.

His legs, covered in khakis, pumped away as he came up the block waving to anyone who happened to be on the short street in our small town on the shore of the Susquehanna River. The bicycle had a big wire basket on the front that he filled with a box of donuts from Delilah’s Donuts every day, a place that had been in the same family for seventy-five years, like so many other businesses here. Those donuts were heading right for my work and then right to my hips. But I had never said no to pastry, and I wasn’t going to start today. In fact, I needed the pick-me-up. Things were busy at the inn, with everyone checking in for the writers’ extended working weekend, and sugar was always welcome. The staff wouldn’t say no, either.

“I’m going to take a break,” I said to my Aunt Hellen as I passed her in the hallway leading to the dining room. She was technically my great aunt, and she could keep things moving for a few minutes while I stepped out into the beautiful April afternoon sunshine. What I really wanted to say was that I was trying not to break, but that wouldn’t be good for business. It had been one heck of a morning already, and I needed a moment to collect myself in the downtime before the festivities really began. Donuts were a great distraction, even if my erstwhile uncle did bring them every day.

“All righty, Ms. Mighty!” Aunt Hellen yelled back. This highly respected tasseomancer and seance-leader had a set of lungs that should never be allowed near a microphone. “I just finished having tea with Owen, so I’m free if you want to go on your walk, too. His phone rang in the middle of our tea, and it must have been important because he hightailed it out the door after making an excuse.” She situated herself behind the desk and placed her hands on the computer screen like it might fly away if she didn’t keep it locked down. “Hey, one thing before you go.”

I held steady, waiting for the inevitable question. My life seemed to be filled with questions.

“What kind of afternoon do you think we’re going to have? Should I restock the printer?”

Showing my teeth in what should have been a smile, I flipped open the book I held in my other hand, shaking my head at the ridiculousness of it all. Why, oh why, did I have to have this particular book with me? And why was my aunt always trying to force me to use my “gift”? I had no real power to do anything, just predict the future or get guidance from the text. Sometimes it was right, sometimes not. Either way, it was not high-powered magic in the least.

While poking my finger at the text, I said, “No need to stock the printer, but be prepared to deal with many irritations.” There’s nothing like trying to give a vague answer to a mundane question when the page you opened to was a spicy-hot scene between the hero and heroine in a recently released romance novel.

“I could have told you that. You have to try harder if you want to own your power, Roxanne Gleason. This is not a game.” Peering at me over her bifocals, she twitched the classic “Mom finger” in my general direction and then tsked.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, but only because I knew it wouldn’t do me any good. It would probably get me a lecture, and I didn’t have time for that today. Plus, those donuts were calling my name.

“Yes, Aunt Hellen. Sorry, Aunt Hellen.”

“Cheeky,” she said under her breath, but I still heard it and smiled.

“Is Owen’s nephew here yet?”

“No, Owen said he had to back out at the last minute, so we have a free room if we need it.”

I sighed because as much as I liked Andrew, that was one less eccentric I’d have to deal with. Owen was a character all on his own, but he knew when to rein it in, Andrew not so much. Plus, his room would still get paid for even if he wasn’t going to use it.

“Okay, thanks for letting me know. Keep an eye out for Paddy McGruver,” I said. “He hasn’t checked in yet, and sometimes he likes to come in the back door to avoid what he assumes are the paparazzi.”

“Oh my, Paddy’s coming in today? Will he be here all four days?” Aunt Hellen smoothed down the front of her shirt over what she jokingly called her shelf since it pretty much caught any crumbs she dropped while eating. She then pulled her peach cardigan closed over her stomach.

“Yes, and yes. Try to keep your hands to yourself this time. You read tea leaves, not rumps. No one is falling for that I’m-a-rumpologist-bit, no matter how hard you try to sell it.”

With that, I walked out the door and left her to primp and prime herself for one of the more problematic creatives who was going to be here for four whole days. Well, not quite four, since it was more like seventy-two total hours from check-in to check-out. But who was counting?

With ten of the writers showcasing their intelligence and posturing over who had the best book and which classes were not to be missed, it would be enough time for me to need a vacation afterward.

The hotel hosted this event every year, but this was my first as the owner of this fine establishment. I had been told to give myself the seven days following the event to only host boring people, so I could rest, relax, and restore my faith in down-to-earth people. I had taken the advice since it had come from the previous owner, my grandfather. We would have guests checking in on Sunday after everyone left, but there wouldn’t be a pen and paper or laptop in sight as far as the guest list went. I had made sure of it.

Uncle Vince was racking his bike at the side of the building and removing his helmet when I stepped out onto the wide veranda that encircled the inn. I looked forward to his visits and had for all the years he’d been in my life. I wasn’t sure exactly how far away on my dad’s family tree he was, just that he was there and always had been.

He was like a beacon in the middle of the day, everyone stopping as they strolled along the sidewalks to say hi and ask about his health. It kept him busy until I could reach him, which worked in my favor. As long as he didn’t give away any of my donuts.

“I see you got two boxes this time,” I said as I approached the old man in his loud get-up.

“Roxy, my love, my dove, how are we on this fine afternoon?” His smile was far cheekier than anything I had ever sported, and I immediately wondered what he was up to. It was almost never good. Or rather, it usually was good for someone but almost never good for me.

“What are you hiding?”

He slapped his hand to his chest and feigned hurt. “I would never -”

“You do. Always,” I shot back, but a smile was trying to come out on my lips that I did not want to give in to. If I indulged him, he always had to see exactly how far he could take it.

“I’m offended.”

“Only because I’m catching you before you can even begin. Hand over the donuts, and I might be able to see my way to just watching for any missteps instead of thwarting you before you even get started.”

At first, he looked defeated, but I knew for a fact that was a lie. He’d just figure out a different way to get around me. It was a game he liked to play, and since he was an uncle and someone who had watched over me since I was a toddler, I knew, and so did he, that I had a weak spot for him and his antics. As long as they didn’t hurt anyone.

Sure enough, that smile popped back out on his face. As I knew it would.

“I saw you in my scrying bowl this morning.”

Ack, that was the last thing I wanted him to say. I would have preferred almost anything else, even the practical jokes he sometimes liked to indulge in. He wasn’t very good at them, but I laughed, even if it was just a big fake spider on my porch. His visions were some of my biggest fears, though. Or it might be better to say his visions had brought about many of my stumbles in life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sherri L. Dodd was raised in southeast Texas. Walking barefoot most days and catching crawdads as they swam the creek beds, she had a love for all things free and natural. Her childhood ran rampant with talk of ghosts, demons, and backcountry folklore. This inspired her first story for sale, about a poisonous flower that shot toxins onto children as they smelled it. Her classmate bought it for all the change in his pocket. Shortly thereafter, her mother packed the two of them up and headed to the central coast of California. Since that time, she has worked corporate, married, raised two sons, and now writes full-time creating atmospheric paranormal fiction. Her debut novel – Murder Under Redwood Moon – shot straight to #1 on Amazon, holding firm as a Best Seller in the Occult Supernatural genre.

HALL WAYS BOOK REVIEW:  What a fun story! The Ghost of Whispering Willow offers spine-tingling adventure and mystery with a what-if plot that will keep readers turning pages.

What if there are spirits who exist between the living and the dead and have unknown purposes to fulfill before moving on to rest in peace? Author Amanda Thrasher spins a tale around two such characters, but in an unusual twist, these spirits are corporeal, and their daily rituals mirror those of the living. (Personally, that would be hell to me if even in the afterlife, I have to do laundry and cook meals. I digress.) This added an extra level of intrigue -- and danger -- to the storyline.
"How come they do everything as a group, including dirty looks?"
If you've read any of Thrasher's other books for younger readers (I'm a huge fan of The Mischief Series), you know that she nails the youngling personae. Through well-written dialogue, I could easily imagine the gaggle of girls interacting with the pack of boys and the terms they create for teaming up for a common cause. The diverse group of tweens in The Ghost of Whispering Willow are drawn perfectly and reminded me of my own junior high days (sneaking out and all) as well as my days teaching kids that age.  Thrasher is all about modeling how loyalty and friendship should be, and it's a real treat to read. (Even if the parent in me is VERY concerned about all the sneaking out! Danger! Danger!)

This edition of The Ghost of Whispering Willow is updated from the original 2012 edition, and I love the new cover (but truly, I loved the old one, too). I was surprised to see some scattered typos (especially in the last twenty-five pages), and I would have liked more showing and less telling; there were a lot of summative paragraphs. But I understand that to do so effectively would have doubled the size of the book, and then it might have been a bit much for the targeted age group. I get that, but I know I wanted more, especially after the build up to that heartwarming, perfect resolution.

The ending of The Ghost of Whispering Willow hits readers with a rapid-fire frenzy of events that had my pulse pounding and then my heart melting. This is a terrific reading escape that I recommend for sixth graders and older.

I am pleased to own a cherished autographed copy of this book that the author gave me at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference.

An organization that has operated in secret for centuries... a mystery that threatens to burn it all to the ground… and she’s the only agent who can stop it…

To the residents and tourists of Galveston Island, Claire Abelard is the friendly young woman who works at the local candy store by day and leads ghost tours of the island’s haunted locations by night. They don’t realize this persona is a cover for Claire’s real job as an agent of the Bureau for Historical Preservation, a clandestine organization that monitors and assists energy projections, or the entities more commonly known as “ghosts.”

When projections begin disappearing from around the island, Claire worries that history may be repeating itself. She launches a dangerous investigation and uncovers a sinister, arcane organization whose agenda threatens not only Galveston’s ghosts, but everything she has worked her whole life to protect.

The truth behind the disappearances rocks Claire’s world to its core and shows her that ghosts aren’t the only things that can come back to haunt you.

Nita DeBorde is a published author and teacher from Houston, TX. Writing and teaching are her two major passions, though traveling and being dog-mom to a crazy Staffordshire-Boxer mix named Mabel are high on the list as well.

Nita has taught high school French for more than 20 years and absolutely loves her "day job" job (about 95% of the time). She loves to travel, and not surprisingly, France is her favorite destination, though her home state of Texas runs a close second.

She is also a huge history buff, which comes through in her fiction writing, and particularly in her latest novel, Ghost Agents, a genre-defying, cozy paranormal mystery with a little sci-fi and romance thrown into the mix. Ghost Agents: Revelations, the second book in the Ghost Agents Trilogy, is slated for release in March 2022.

Nita’s first novel, Project Lachesis, is currently available in both Kindle and hardcopy format from Amazon.com.

Her first published work, a Christian allegory titled Lessons from the Meadow, was published in December of 2013 under the pen name A.M. Ward. Stay tuned for more titles by A.M. Ward in the Christian fiction genre.
