My Journey with Writing & Storytelling

by Michael B. Judkins

I started just writing in class one day in high school. My writing didn't progress until I  realized something to write about. If anything, I consider myself a narrative writer or abstract. I intend to develop a character into many moving parts which transfer into the story I envision in my head. I tend to think too much, write notes, and create something from there. Sometimes I sit at the computer and start writing.

My path to writing is to be bold with the ideas and characters. Most of the time, I’m writing from a place of emotions and feelings which can turn into sad writing time. If I take that part of the writing and bring a sense of hope, it changes my feelings as a writer during the process -- ultimately, creating my vision.

Storytelling is a way to be expressive, self-explanatory, bold, and courageous. At the same time, you have to inform, educate, and nurture the audience.

The Baby with Three Families, Two Countries, and One Promise is a children’s book designed to be read by parents to a child adopted from a foreign country. The story is first recounted from the perspective of the parents in the USA, who are very sad not to be able to have a child. The perspective then switches to that of the biological mother, who realizes that she does not have the wherewithal to raise a child. She makes the difficult decision to give up her baby. Next readers learn about a foreign adoption agency, to which the biological mother surrenders her child. The adoption agency identifies foster parents to take care of the baby temporarily. The foster parents give the baby a temporary name.

The parents in the USA begin researching international adoption possibilities and connect with the foreign adoption agency. The parents begin the adoption process and have to go to a school to learn how to be adoptive parents. When the foreign adoption agency matches the USA parents with the baby, the USA parents fly to the foreign country, where they meet the baby and the foster parents at the adoption agency. They find out that the temporary name given to the baby by his foster parents is one of the names they have selected for the baby. Their last requirement in the foreign country is to secure a visa for the baby from the U.S. Embassy.

With the baby’s visa in hand, the parents and baby return to the United States, where they are joyously greeted by their dog, their friends, and the baby’s new grandparents. When the parents tuck their baby in at night, they tell him his story—that he has three families, two countries, and a promise for the future to visit the country of his birth when he is older.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

"Clearly laying out some of the key reasons, factors, and steps in the emotionally complex process of overseas adoption, this book delicately explores the subject, making it a great launching point for conversations between parents and children." Self-Publishing Review

"International adoption is a complex topic, but under the dual, in-depth focus of author Julie Gianelloni Connor and illustrator Saman Chinthaka Weerasinghe, the story comes to life to teach all ages about the emotional and organizational process involved in joining a child to new parents." Book Review:

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Gingersnap Snatcher is a delightful story that will keep readers young and old amused and engaged. It's well-written and the story is told through well-balanced, lyrical rhyming, so it's ideal for a classroom, library, or home read-aloud. The vibrant and expressive illustrations by Svitlana Liuta perfectly complement author Vicky Weber's text for a fun-filled and funny reading experience. I smiled from cover to cover and can't wait to share this story with my granddaughter.

The story and illustrations were wonderful all by themselves, but for those who are musically inclined, Weber goes next level and also includes the music and words to "The Gingersnap Snatcher" song and points readers back to "vocal exploration opportunities hidden in the book." Full disclosure: I am not musically inclined, cannot read music, and had ZERO understanding of those vocal exploration opportunities. I would have loved a link to hear the song so I could sing it and needed some guidance about finding the hidden things in the book.

As an added attraction, the author shares a QR code for readers to get a free download of the gingersnap recipe or take it up a notch and order the BaKit Box that comes with a copy of the book and a cookie baking kit. (Must order by 12/14/21.)

With the story set during the holidays, this book would make a great Christmas present and basis for a family activity and quality time tradition to be enjoyed for years to come. I will definitely be exploring this author's other books.

Meet the Author:

Christine still remembers the butterflies in the pit of her stomach as she performed traditional Korean fan dances as a 12-year-old growing up in Southern California. She never dreamed that over 30 years later, she would be channeling her inner fan dancer to write Hannah’s story. Christine is a second generation Korean American wife and mother of two, living in San Diego.

Christine loves telling stories for a living, which started with a 15-year career in TV news and continues today in public relations. She is the winner of six news Emmys and multiple PR awards. Christine was always an avid reader, but wished there were more Asian American book characters she could relate to (besides Claudia Kishi from The Babysitter’s Club). So she decided to create her own! Christine also enjoys singing karaoke, photography, and baking.
