SYNOPSIS:

Murder on Site by TG Wolff

The Rizk Brothers Legal Mysteries

In the corridors of Indiana’s justice system, power is both a weapon and a curse.

Jakob Rizk never expected to become Indiana’s acting attorney general—especially not after his mentor’s sudden death. Two weeks in, he’s losing sleep, battling a ruthless rival, and facing off with a powerful senator focused on his downfall. The last thing he needs is for his twin, Seth—a Miami cop hiding secrets of his own—to arrive unexpectedly.

Jakob is under pressure to prosecute a young engineer for the murder of a hard-nosed inspector famous for rooting out corruption. But with scant evidence and clear signs of political interference, the case is a minefield. Jakob has always lived by the law, but now one misstep could cost him a career.

Together, the brothers must unravel a web of greed and deception, each dead set on appearing strong in the other’s eyes. As they race the clock, which matters more: the truth, their careers, or fragile bonds that could be shattered forever?

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: What an absolute delight it is to read Murder on Site, the series starter of the Rizk Brothers Legal Mysteries. Perfect pacing, memorable characters, and liberal doses of danger and deception -- and humor -- will keep readers thoroughly entertained and engaged. TG Wolff is an author to watch (and YIPPEE! I see that the second book in this series, Guilty by Association, is publishing later this month. I'm ready for more of the twin brothers Jakob and Seth's shenanigans.

Time flies while reading Murder on Site, and before I knew it, I had devoured the story and had barely taken any notes. In my reading world, that's about the best compliment I can offer an author. (The very few scattered typos I found barely slowed me down, and it's unlikely most readers will even notice them.) The ability to completely immerse a reader in another world is truly a gift and TG Wolff has it. Her knowledge of civil engineering allows for a unique premise and provides insight into the world behind the projects (like building bridges), which is more convoluted and competitive than we laypeople can imagine.

In Murder on Site, Wolff does an interesting thing: the subplot of a death of a beloved public personality and forthcoming funeral for him provide a framework for the primary murder mystery to unravel. As the funeral draws nearer, the tension runs higher as the Rizk brothers draw nearer to finding a killer. But they don't do it alone. There's a full team of players including one of the most robust and favorite characters, police detective Angel Martinez. I sure hope to see her return in the next installment. Creating realistic, fully fleshed-out characters is one of TG Wolff's superpowers.

Beyond the terrific plot and characters, Wolff throws in some pop culture references that those of a certain age will appreciate (Risky Business & Bewitched gave me a smile), which make the people and places of Murder on Site feel more authentic...like if we showed up in Indianapolis, we'd know right where to have a cold beer, get a sammie, avoid construction sites, and feel right at home.

Highly recommend.

TG Wolff

TG Wolff has never been able resist a good puzzle. With an engineer’s mind for logic and a lifelong love of mysteries, she crafts whodunit stories that challenge readers to outsmart her detective. Her books are filled with quirky characters, red herrings, and—because she firmly believes solving (fictional) murders should be fun—a healthy dose of humor.

TG earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, learning early to see every problem as a mystery and each solution as the answer the result of asking the right questions. That same curiosity drives her fiction, where nothing is ever accidental and every detail counts.

When she’s not plotting fictional crimes, TG is a mystery reader and reviewer and the co-creator / co-host of the whodunit mystery podcast Mysteries to Die For. A Babs Norman Hollywood Mystery

Against the backdrop of WWII, no one expected to find a murdered stagehand on a Warner Brothers sound stage. With so much at stake, Jack L. Warner hires Babs Norman and Guy Brandt, the two young private eyes who recently resolved his high-profile Maltese Falcon/Blackbird Killer Case. Social justice crusader Leon Lewis suspects local Nazi sympathizers are responsible. Lewis assigns a German stuntman, a veteran of the decadent subculture of Weimar Berlin nightlife and one of his newest operatives, to join forces with the private detectives.

According to Warner, the show must go on, but everything from bomb scares to the Japanese internment, to unruly parrots, forbidden love, and family crises conspires against solving the crime. “As Time Goes By,” actors Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and the rest of the Casablanca ensemble join the professional private eyes to round up the unusual suspects and capture the killer.

GUEST POST BY ELIZABTH CROWENS
"The Ups and Downs of Interview Questions"

Hi, everyone. I’m Elizabeth Crowens, and I just released Book 3 of my Babs Norman Golden Age of Hollywood Mystery series, Round Up the Unusual Suspects, about a murder on the Warner Brothers studio lot in 1942 where my PIs, Babs Norman and Guy Brandt, enlist the help of the cast of Casablanca to solve the mystery. Where did the title come from? There’s a famous line that Captain Louis Renault, the Vichy Chief of Police (played by Claude Rains), always says, and that’s, “Round up the usual suspects.” I just tweaked it a bit.

Whenever I launch a book, I do a few author interviews, but sometimes I get either the most bizarre questions, or the first answer that pops into my head is completely off the wall. For example, let’s talk about snacks. Apparently, a popular question to ask is what kind of snacks do I indulge in while in the writing zone? First of all, I shouldn’t be eating anything if I’m constantly counting my calories. Secondly, I’ve spilled coffee and cereal on enough keyboards that I should know better by now. There’s a dedicated spill zone to the left of my desk where my tan carpet has been permanently stained from reaching for a cup of coffee or putting one back and missing the end table. It’s gotten so bad that I purchased a peacock blue shaggy bathmat from Target and covered it up. Also, one of my favorite snacks is extra crunchy Cheetos, but the last thing I want to do is to get that neon orange cheese dust all over my computer! Yikes! Time to make a trip to the Apple Store.

Another question I get is what kind of music I listen to when I’m working? Generally, I can’t listen to music. It’s too distracting. Although on Sundays, I like to start out with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, probably because I’m such a Stanley Kubrick film freak. Remember A Clockwork Orange? Yeah, I have strange tastes in film, but the cinematography from that movie, along with the first Star Wars, was what propelled me to work in the entertainment industry. So, on most Sundays, I indulge in classical music. Saturdays when I’m cleaning around the house, I get into lively rock and roll like The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, or the B-side of Abbey Road by The Beatles. I play that one a lot and also like their song, "Paperback Writer." Gee, I wonder why? LOL

When it comes to editing, I must have absolute quiet. Pretty much the same for writing, but on occasion, and only if I’m working in the early evening, a glass of wine and movie soundtracks do the trick. My favorite film composer is Hans Zimmer. But for the most part, since I like it quiet with no distractions, I tend to wake in the middle of the night to write. For that, I need my coffee.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on book summary, so please read the synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: 4.5 STARS. Within the pages of Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired, author Dr. Pam Stephens Lehenbauer offers readers a respite from the world where we're assaulted not only by toxic negativity, but also toxic positivity, which she explains can be equally problematic. Lehenbauer provides a new perspective on well-being in this well-written, well-edited, and well-researched gem of a book.

Even reading the Introduction to Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired, readers will find themselves nodding in agreement, muttering yes, yes, yes as the author outlines many of today’s challenges. With all the demands and expectations put upon us to look and feel a certain way, Lehenbauer advises us to step back and reassess, and she defines “wonder” as an emotion – an accurate definition that I’d never considered despite feeling it many, many times.

Additionally, those early pages include a not-to-be missed list of ten to-dos designed to engage wonder, and a download link to a free guide and workbook to use as a companion to reading Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired. This guide rounds out what I was expecting and is a perfect complement to take the book to the next level. Honestly, I’d like to see it included in the book in future updates.

Though the introductory pages contain the crux of the book, everything after is designed to bring joy, amazement, and wonder. Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired is almost like a reference book for finding inspiration. The majority of the book is filled with statistics, trivia, myths, and both serious and giggle-worthy truths, all to wonder-fy the reader. Every reader will be reminded of the wonder of life and things bigger than us. Our bodies, for example, are truly miraculous in how they function and perform for us, but how often do we think about the miracle of the myriad components working together?

Highlights for this reader are:

*the affirmation that talking to my plants matters. (they’re responding)

*there’s such a thing as the nightmarish Zombie Ant Fungus (EEK)

*there’s a collective noun for a group of jellyfish (a smack!)

*the “Timeless Wonders of Art and Architecture” (but what about the Marfa Lights?)

*the ”Ordinary But Extraordinary List for Wonder, Joy, and Gratitude”  (pages of small joys)

It’s too much to sit and read this book straight through because of the sheer quantity of information contained in Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired. But I absolutely will revisit it, particularly when life’s feeling heavy, but also to make a habit of feeling wonder. I can choose a category (flowers? stars? my digestive system?) and be reminded of the miracles of each. And with the companion workbook, there’s opportunity to dig deeper and reflect upon them.

“Please take time to pause and appreciate the many gifts available to you from your everyday life and consider how you might help others find wonder and joy.”

Granted, I kinda have the perfect setting to be receptive to this book and mindset: a vacay in a spectacular, wonder-inducing place. Nonetheless, there are plenty of takeaways for the reader, no matter the situation or surroundings, and a big takeaway is to show gratitude for this astonishing universe and all that’s within it.

Step one: go to tropical island

Just A Hat ~ Lone Star Lit Blitz Audiobook Review & Educator-Only Giveaway!

JUST A HAT

By SHANAH KHUBIAR

Young Adult / Coming of Age / Jewish Fiction / Small-Town Texas / 1970s
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Pages: 254
Publication Date: July 18, 2023

 Scroll down for giveaway!

SYNOPSIS

Action-packed, humorous, and bittersweet, this 1970s-era coming-of-age novel is more relevant than ever--exploring how a second-generation immigrant kid in a new hometown must navigate bullying, unexpected friendships, and the struggle of keeping both feet firmly planted in two very different cultures.

It's 1979, and thirteen-year-old Joseph Nissan can't help but notice that small-town Texas has something in common with Revolution-era Iran: an absence of fellow Jews. And in such a small town it seems obvious that a brown kid like him was bound to make friends with Latinos--which is a plus, since his new buds, the Ybarra twins, have his back. But when the Iran hostage crisis, two neighborhood bullies, and the local reverend's beautiful daughter put him in all sorts of danger, Joseph must find new ways to cope at home and at school.

As he struggles to trust others and stay true to himself, a fiercely guarded family secret keeps his father at a distance, and even his piano teacher, Miss Eleanor--who is like a grandmother to him--can't always protect him. But Joseph is not alone, and with a little help from his friends, he finds the courage to confront his fears and discovers he can inspire others to find their courage, too.

Just a Hat is an authentically one-of-a-kind YA debut that fuses the humor of Firoozeh Dumas's Funny in Farsi with the poignancy of Daniel Nayeri's Everything Sad Is Untrue.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
Audiobook Narrated by Ramiz Monsef
Length: 6 hours, 33 minutes

HALL WAYS BLOG'S AUDIOBOOK REVIEW (Originally posted 4/30/2024) This book. I don’t know where to begin my gushing about Just a Hat, which is quite possibly my favorite book of the year so far. Maybe I start with 1978, Hazel, Texas.

Small-town Texas. 1978 and every other year of our Lord. Sigh.

I enjoyed returning to the seventies and recalling things like biking to the 7-11 and friends who joined resources wondering, “what would they buy with their pooled seventy-eight cents?” I remember the expense of a long-distance phone call and not having a quick and easy way to communicate with my parents if my plans changed or I ran into trouble. But if not for these little reminders the author dropped along the way, the novel could very well be set in current times.  The narrow-mindedness of ill-informed folks and their prejudices, stereotyping, and anger and fear of anyone who is “other” sadly persists in small-town Texas and beyond.

“Rage. Control. RAGE.”

Author Shanah Khubiar has written some magnificent characters who just pop from the page. The emotions of the main character, nearly-thirteen-year-old Joseph, are palpable. As he tries to take control and adhere to his father’s teachings, Joseph learns to channel his anger into throwing a football, and here again, Khubiar slides in a reality of pretty much any year in Texas: football is king and often times, is the great equalizer.

Kids will love that there are curse words in other languages (Hebrew & Arabic & Farsi), and those reading with their ears will learn the correct pronunciations. To that point -- the author doesn’t shy away from using all the horrible, derogatory terms that ignorant people used…and continue to use. Hate words. I think it’s the right choice to include them because it lends authenticity to the story and the shock of hearing them reminds the reader how powerful words are, then suggests:

“Let words change us and make us better people.”

The audiobook narration is outstanding, and Ramiz Monsef’s performance perfectly complements Khubiar’s writing.  Hearing Monsef voice the characters and pronounce words that were unfamiliar to me added an additional layer of realism to Just a Hat and made the story unforgettable. Pacing was perfect and I listened at 1x speed. Top-notch recording quality, too. Blackstone Audio never disappoints.

I highly recommend Just a Hat to readers of all ages because it’s not only a well-written, entertaining story that’s colored with humor and heartbreak, but it’s also a reminder that we must continue fighting the same battles to overcome hate, prejudice, and biases that persist.

SYNOPSIS
Wyatt W. Sallow, MBA poet, business ethics professor, and coach of the 8th ranked collegiate chess team in East Texas—travels to the heart of northern England to trace his family origins in mundane Sallowsfield, only to find his supposed ancestry a mirage. He does have a real past, however: one that stalks him across the green hillsides in echoes of his catastrophic marriage, the lingering shadow of a lost child, and—there, in person, inexplicably emerging from the town’s faux-Victorian train station—“X,” the enigmatic object of his unrequited passion and a figure as perplexing as an algebraic variable.

On his eight-day tour / pilgrimage / mock epic journey, Wyatt pursues the specter of his lost love and crosses paths with the citizens of this down-at-its-heels market town as they struggle to grasp the all-consuming obsessions, ghosts, and X-factors that confound their days.

Thought-provoking yet dryly humorous, Sallowsfield weaves diverse elements into a story both light-hearted and philosophical, exploring along the way universal human touchstones of obsession, ruined love, and the inexplicable mysteries that shape our lives.
