 Book Description:

Need a laugh to get through your workday?

You've come to the right place. Ambrose Bierce's classic The Devil's Dictionary took on life in general. Now a century later, it's time to lampoon the business world. There's no richer target than being told to think outside the box by leaders spouting off about synergy, teamwork, and innovation while at the same time exhorting you to stay in your swim lane. If as famed business guru Peter Drucker writes, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast," then we've been asked to eat a dog's breakfast at work for far too long!

A little truth in every joke.

Join the fun as the two lead authors and 50 other contributors offer their humorous take on how the workplace really operates. With almost 600 diabolical definitions to enjoy, you're sure to find plenty to smile about.

GUEST POST
Don’t Mess with My Heart, Mind or Pocketbook!
By Dan Hill

Why do we go to work? For some of us, it’s a passion—a passion that might slowly ebb from us thanks to managers who leave us with REASONS TO CARE: N/A or feeling like we’re stuck BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE: Walking into the office every day. For others of us, we go to work in no small part because we’re hoping for some good company at a good company. What might we find instead? GETTING SOME PUSHBACK: Experiencing gale-force winds. Who are your CO-WORKERS: Those with whom you spend more time than your own family but no less about than a mongoose.

Of course, there’s also the money. What a shame, then, when you become a victim of AUTOMATION: Staffing reductions that involve a plug-in cord. Or that the company’s definition of LIVING WAGE really means, “the minimum wage x gazillion.”

One recourse could be despair. But don’t let the b*stards get you down! Turn to humor instead, first to lift your spirits and then you to give you the energy to find a better job, a better workplace, a better corporate culture. Soon 75% of the workplace will consist of millennials who know that there is no longer such a thing as job security and that BUSY is the new STUPID. Find a job with more meaning, and where one gets treated well. That’s the underlying purpose of Blah, Blah, Blah: A Snarky Guide to Office Lingo. It’s a book with more than a little truth in every joke.

Book Description:
It’s hard to fit in when you work in a mostly male world, let alone achieve your goals. Women in tech - as in many areas of business - are in the minority in every meeting. It’s difficult to find our voices in a room full of men. Even when we’re ready to share ideas, we often have to shout to be heard, trusted, and respected. It’s time for that to change.

Holly Chessman has used her marketing and business experience to navigate mostly male waters. She's taught people how to build their reputations using online and offline tools - and now she wants you to gain that same success.

As you go through this book, you’ll learn about the Defining You methodology, the exclusive system for accelerating reputation and career growth. You’ll get the step-by-step guidance to reach your goals faster than ever. You’ll develop the means to realize the success you’ve always envisioned: Speak up in meetings. Get the raise you want. BOOK REVIEW
✪✪✪✪✪

HALL WAYS REVIEW: From Amplify's empowering cover, to the personal note from the author that came with my review copy and some of the earliest pieces of advice in the book, it’s clear that author Holly Chessman knows her subject matter. And she is seriously accessible, providing her email address to readers ask questions and give feedback, which makes them feel that they are already building a support network.

“Small steps with big impact – that’s what it’s all about.”

Chessman is an amazing self-help cheerleader whose voice jumps from the page to encourage readers. She’s your team captain, standing right by your side and always with an enthusiastic “You’ve got this!” message to keep you encouraged, even when the tasks ahead can be daunting.

And daunting they are given the hurdles women must overcome to be successful. In the introduction, Chessman provides statistics and real examples of what women face in order to be not only heard but to thrive in their careers. She provides tangible, actionable ways to overcome these hurdles, and her energy and belief in the reader is palpable. She makes it clear, also, that Amplify isn’t a book that only women need to read; men can learn a thing or two to help the cause (or at least not hurt it).

“Take that quiet frustration that’s been burning in
the back of your mind and transform it into ACTION.”

Amplify is divided into five major sections. Each section starts with the big-picture overview (which oddly lacks page numbers) explaining the focus of the directive being addressed (for example, “Break Down Barriers,” “Develop Your Goals,” “Amplify Your Voice”). From there, there are chapters that give the action items to achieving each directive, and each chapter concludes with exercises for the reader to perform. While some are a bit cheesy for me as a professional who’s past the mid-life point -- I dissolve into giggles at the thought of looking in a mirror, maintaining eye-contact with myself, and giving myself a Stuart Smalley kind of pep-talk – other exercises are spot-on for women of every age, whether on a career path, life journey, or combination of both (hello, me).

As I read Amplify, I found myself nodding in agreement to Chessman’s advice and approaches. Yes, make both long-term and short-term goals and commit them to paper and make yourself accountable by telling a friend. Yes, educate yourself about how to reach your goals – Chessman gives you a list of resources. Yes, get connected with the online world, which lets you be heard and expands your support network even further. Yes, STOP apologizing! Yes, get your copy of Amplify right now.

"Give credit where it's due including when
you're the one who deserves it."

Even an old dog can learn new tricks, and I have a page full of takeaways I am going to implement into my own business plans and goals. Towards the end of Amplify, Chessman reminds readers that the processes of her “Defining You Methodology” are not a fait accompli – evaluation and re-evaluation are critical. In that same venue, I’d expect Amplify to have several iterations in order for its considerable sources and resources (all listed in the wonderful Appendix) to stay current.

The author has an informal style of writing that invites readers in to be part of the team, in a we’re-all-in-this-together way that makes it very easy to read. Chessman learned well that when you take a stance, you then give examples to support it. Her elaboration of her points is excellent. There are a few typos, dropped words, and comma errors, but most won’t be distracted by them. I highly recommend the book as one that will be read, re-read, and referenced.

Thank you to the author and iRead Book Tours for providing me a print copy in exchange for my opinion – the only kind I give.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW
There are many books out there about how to become happy and successful at work. What makes yours different?
My book is easy to read and pertinent for anyone in the work world, from teenagers to those approaching retirement age. My ultimate goals when I wrote it were to help people not only be more joyful at work but also increase their productivity. I wanted to stay away from something long and complicated. Readers should be able to implement most any of the book’s suggestions quickly and easily, no matter their personality.

I share not only my own experiences but also those of others in a variety of professions. The reader will see examples of joy in the workplace in small, medium, and large companies or organizations. And I don’t just write about office workers but salespeople, factory workers, and others.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
Yes, I’m a grant consultant. I currently help 3-4 non-profits to find and apply for grant opportunities. I also conduct training on the basics of the grant profession. I’ve been a grant professional for over 17 years now.

And, later this fall, I’ll be starting a weekly column for one of our local newspapers, the Hamilton County Reporter. “Sandwiched” will feature my adventures of being in the sandwich generation. For those of you not familiar with this term, it’s when you’re “sandwiched” between raising your own family and taking care of elderly parents, often while working and managing a household.

Do you write every day?
Almost! When I’m not working on a book, I save my weekends for volunteering, activities with family and friends, and reading. But Monday – Friday, you can most always catch me writing a grant proposal, column, or marketing piece for my book or any of the organizations I volunteer with.

If you’re a mom writer, how do you balance your time?
When my kids were babies/toddlers, I was able to work from home and did a lot on my computer with them at my side. My two sons took great naps, so I made sure to do most of the work that needed immense concentration during those 2-3 hours every afternoon.

When I worked as a grant coordinator for a Central Indiana municipality for nine years, my husband was at home with the boys until they both started school.

Now, my sons are teenagers who have part-time jobs in addition to going to high school. Thankfully they both drive now, so I’m able to do my grant and book promotion work during the day without barely any interruptions.

When I’m working on a book, my husband and sons know that my evenings and weekends will be dedicated to writing, so they’re not surprised when I disappear for hours at a time.

My bigger struggle now is getting work done while taking care of my mother. Thankfully, technology is a Godsend! For example, when I’m waiting in the lobby during a procedure for my mom, you can find me on my laptop proofing or working on projects. And it’s great to quickly check emails on my phone as well.

The biggest sanity savers on this topic include Amazon and the new grocery delivery services offered by many stores. Both of these are worth every penny! I’ve cut down dramatically on the trips to my mom’s assisted living facility.

Name a quirky thing you like to do.

I am a hoop dancer! Dancing with a hula-hoop is my number one exercise and meditative activity. If I don’t hoop at least twice a week, I get quite cranky.
