ABOUT THE BOOK: A hurricane is brewing, a deadly plague is spreading, and time isn’t what we think it is.

Ronnie Andrews knows he’s here. Jeffrey Brennan, the ex-boyfriend who has haunted her past, is lurking somewhere in the Puerto Rican hospital, waiting for his moment to strike. As bubonic plague fears sweep the island, the hospital descends into chaos—staff flee, Homeland Security locks down the facility, and a bioterror threat escalates. But Ronnie fears something even worse: that Jeffrey will use this moment of turmoil to send her hurtling through time once again.

The damage to her brain from previous time-travel events is already severe—one more jump could destroy her. But Jeffrey needs Ronnie and Mike gone before they expose his time travel device to the government.

Meanwhile, Mike—barely clinging to consciousness after a devastating mudslide crash—is about to be put into a medically induced coma. But he knows one thing: if he falls asleep, he may never wake up again. With time slipping through their fingers, can Ronnie and Mike stop Jeffrey before it's too late?

Fracturing Time is the adrenaline-pumping fourth book in the Stealing Time series, packed with high-stakes suspense, time travel twists, and heart-pounding action.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Reading Fracturing Time is like watching a juggling act, where author KJ Waters keeps multiple characters, multiple timelines, and multiple settings orbiting around her main character, Ronnie, in this action-packed fourth book in the Stealing Time series.

Having not read any of the prior books in the series, I struggled a bit to understand the relationships and events that led up to Fracturing Time. Also, I imagine having been alongside the characters, living the moments with them from the get-go, would make a reader feel more connected and invested, and even repelled. Waters provides readers with a few good bring-to-dates and insights along the way, which helps. But, I won't recommend it as a stand-alone book. Instead, I recommend the series because you'll want to know all the delicious details, start to finish.

Stephanie McKay studied the threatening sky, bracing herself for Orlando’s daily summer ritual, those few hours when Mother Nature threw her tantrum.”

Waters’s own experiences living in Florida surely aided her in creating such accurate and realistic situations for readers to experience (vicariously, thank goodness). However, it’s clear the author has done copious amounts of research into historical events, law enforcement procedures, medical conditions, and of course, weather events.  Sometimes scenes went on a bit long and one seemed intentionally ghoulish to me, but they definitely illustrated the deep research.

The characters in Fracturing Time are fleshed out and are written so that we hear the lilt in Steph's and Ian's voices, the seething in Jeffery's, and the time stamp of 1752 in Appleton's, to name a few. This lends an extra level of authenticity to the characters and the intriguing, even outrageous subplots in which they are involved.

I read an ARC of Fracturing Time and found some editing issues, but I assume those have been cleaned up in the final version available for sale. For this new-to-the-series reader, some re-reading of passages was required to try to grasp what was happening, which is pretty mind blowing and imaginative; but it works. Plus, having scenes told from multiple viewpoints (including one from a highly-medicated character) gives us a better understanding of the bigger picture. BONUS: if like me you love when a cover and book title tie-in to the story, you'll be pleased.

In the “A Letter to My Readers” section at the end of the book, author KJ Waters says, “I’ve wrapped up the storyline in the fourth book in the series, but I have at least two others in the works. I’m also going to write some spin-offs.” Hooray! In Fracturing Time, there are definitely some set-ups for more books. While Waters is writing, I’ll backtrack to book one and read current to be ready for more adventures. Standing by!

A Spying Eye ~ Book Blog Tour Review & Giveaway!

A SPYING EYE
A Henrietta
and Inspector Howard Novel
by MICHELLE COX

Genre:  Adult Fiction (18+)
Categories Historical Mystery
Publisher She Writes Press
Pages: 256 pages
Release dates:   October 25, 2022

Content Rating: R: There are some swear words peppered throughout (not many) and 2 explicit sex scenes (tasteful, but more than a PG-13 scene)

Book Description:

In A Spying Eye, Clive and Henrietta return to Europe in an attempt to resurrect their failed honeymoon. While in London, they are approached by their old friend, Inspector John Hartle, who convinces them to search for the missing panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, a famous Renaissance painting, of which Hitler’s top men are also in pursuit.

Meanwhile, back in Chicago, Oldrich Exley threatens to cut off financial support for the entire Von Harmon brood if Elsie continues with her plan to marry Gunther―a situation made worse by the sudden appearance of one Heinrich Meyer, who claims to be little Anna’s father and threatens to take her away. Desperate, Elsie seeks the help of Clive’s sister, Julia, who is herself the victim of domestic abuse and who has fallen under the spell of a handsome Texas millionaire bent on acquiring a rare painting from the Howard collection.

Clive and Henrietta’s search takes them to Chateau du Freudeneck in Strasbourg, France―the ancient seat of the Von Harmons and home to three eccentric distant relatives. What begins as a wild goose chase turns decidedly more deadly when several Nazi officers also arrive at the chateau in search of a “valuable item.” When Henrietta and Clive attempt to flee after Henrietta uncovers a shocking truth, they are forced to trust themselves to a suspicious French servant who seems all-too willing to help...

Book Review:

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Hmm. Do I go with the bad news or the good news first? I think the bad news. Upon reading the last words of the Epilogue on this sixth installment of the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series (I've devoured them all), I have a serious case of the blues. Why? Because I have NO IDEA WHEN the next book is coming, and I must have answers! Answers, I say! Sure, author Michelle Cox masterfully connects the dots of our main mystery and gives us enough closure on that element that readers are satisfied. And sure, we get our dose of warm fuzzies with our main couple's HEA, but there are so many subplots that demand another book from Ms. Cox, and I need it, stat!

Okay, so there really isn't any bad news other than that I will have to again exercise patience in waiting for the next Henrietta and Clive adventure to begin. And truly, I cannot complain one single little bit since Cox dropped in my much-demanded Texas twist, and lemmetellya, billionaire cattle rancher Glenn Forbes does not disappoint. High-five for giving Julia (and readers) something to smile about in her life. I cannot wait to see how this unfolds. Or Elsie and Gunther's story unfolds...or Antonio and Bennett's...or Edna and Pascal's...and what about M15, the Nazis, the Russians, and the Deuxième Bureau?!

Speaking of the Deuxième Bureau, not only did my Texan heart sing, but my Francophile heart did as well with so much of A Spying Eye set in France. The descriptions of the countryside, the villages, and the even a chateau area perfect and pulled me right into the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the French phrases sprinkled throughout the novel to add authenticity to the dialogue. Having Clive return to France and the Nazi presence there adds an edginess to the plot. (And perhaps explains why Clive seems a bit grumpier than usual.) Trust no one --except PLEASE, can we trust the Texan?

As always, Cox's characterization skills shine in her storytelling, and readers see the very best and very worst of people. There are characters to love and loathe, and some who fall into a gray area between -- we want to loathe them, but is there a spark of something good? Or in those we think we love, is there a spark of something unseemly? Off? Misunderstood?

One thing that's certain is A Spying Eye is a fabulously entertaining novel, start to finish. (And don't skip over the Author's Notes and Sources sections at the end. Fascinating stuff.) I recommend the full, delicious series but if you want to jump right in, you certainly can and won't be disappointed.

A Letter to Potential Readers—The Shade Under the Mango Tree

Dear Reader,

Luna, the heroine of The Shade Under the Mango Tree, decides to write about her experience in a foreign country. Not only to tell the world about it, but also to help herself heal. Can writing help you heal? Yes, it can. And if you want to know more about it, try this post: WriteTo Save Your Life (or, at least, your psyche). It’s one of my inspirations in writing the book.

This type of writing can take many forms. A journal like Luna does. A letter to no one in particular. Or a book—fiction or nonfiction like a memoir.

In The Shade Under the Mango Tree (SUMT), my characters reflect a little part of me. I think it’s inevitable even when you write fantasy or sci fi. I also pay homage to grandparents. In these times when both parents often work, it’s not unusual to turn to them for help in looking after children. Both Luna and Lucien were (more or Less) raised by grandparents. My own grandmother figured significantly in my growing-up years.

Love is at the core of all my stories. Aren’t they in everyone’s life if you allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to another? Love strips you bare to both hurt and happiness. Love demands surrendering your control. Still, my novels don’t fit neatly into the romance genre. Because, ultimately, they’re about life, about our messy, complicated, wonderful lives. So SUMT includes some narrative of a foreign country’s deadly history and a suicide.

I hope the book speaks to you in some way.

All the best,
Evy Journey

Award-winning author Anita Dickason is a twenty-two veteran of the Dallas Police Department. She served as a patrol officer, undercover narcotics detective, advanced accident investigator, tactical officer and first female sniper on the Dallas SWAT team.

Anita writes about what she knows, cops and crime. Her police background provides an unending source of inspiration for her plots and characters. Many incidents and characters portrayed in her books are based on personal experience. For her, the characters are the fun part of writing as she never knows where they will take her. There is always something out of the ordinary in her stories.

In Anita’s debut novel, Sentinels of the Night, she created an elite FBI Unit, the Trackers. Since then, she has added three more Tracker crime thrillers, Going Gone!, A u 7 9, and Operation Navajo. The novels are not a series and can be read in any order.

As a Texas author, many of Anita’s books are based in Texas, or there is a link to Texas. When she stepped outside of the Tracker novels and wrote, Not Dead, she selected Meridian, a small community in central Texas for the location.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audio book review: Because I always go there, I’m going to start by saying I love the cover of The Ninth Session because it pairs so nicely with a psychological-themed story, and both the cover and premise are attention-grabbing. Also, because time for even reading with my ears is so hard to come by these days, I love that this audio book has a running time of under seven hours (less than 200 pages in print). Before I even read a word, I already loved three things about the book.

Happily, the book lovin’ continued as I listened to The Ninth Session unfold. Reading/listening is akin to unpeeling an onion, layer by layer, but finding out that the core could be rotten. Main character Alicia is a psychologist, and author Deborah Serani uses the vehicle of Alicia’s therapy notes for readers to not only get a great summary of events with patient Lucas Ferro, but we get real insight and connection to Alicia. We are hearing her thoughts, reflections, and feelings fresh off the sessions with Luke, but Alicia integrates her patient observations and ones of herself. It’s clinical, but it’s fascinating.

Readers may be impatient with the humdrum details, but these are important because they underscore Alicia’s humdrum life. I kept looking at how much time was left in the story because I knew something was coming and then BAM! It does. The pace and plot escalate quickly from humdrum to HOLY COW level.

As much as the novella-length book is perfect for my reading needs right now, I would have liked more fleshed-out characters, some fine-tuning on plot, and a bit more out of the ending. But don’t get me wrong: The Ninth Session is a really satisfying story as it is. I just want more!

If you’re paying attention to loose threads, you might figure out a major component of the big reveal – but there’s no way you’ll predict the details of it. WOW! The Ninth Session has some unexpected and delicious twists. I absolutely recommend it and look forward to this author’s next book.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: The author narrates her book, and she does it admirably. While there aren’t truly distinct voices (she uses different pitches to voice the characters, though), there is never any confusion between characters due to the writing in the dialogue scenes. I really enjoyed the sound effects added in the scratching of pen on paper as Alicia is taking notes in her office. I did bump up the listening speed to 1.5x, but Serano’s pacing is steady, her diction clear. And the quality of the recording was excellent. Without hesitation, I would listen to her narrate another book.

Thank you to the author and Audiobookworm Promotions for providing me an audio code in exchange for my honest review – the only kind I give.

"What I hoped for in writing my book"
by Ilana Estelle

I know what I deal with now and understand my disability. Without the book I could never have had that.

Initially, I never thought about my book in that way. I wanted and needed to know what was wrong with me and for me to be able to piece my symptoms together for the first time. I knew I struggled with certain elements of a disability. Having completed the book now, I have come face to face with my disability for the first time, and that feels good. I also have closure. Without the book and with my blog, I could never have achieved that either.

So overall, writing the book has been a cathartic experience, it has brought a knowing and understanding where I previously had none. It has empowered me to want to do better and be better. I would like my readers to take away the overriding message of positivity and that we very much have the tools to change our lives where we think it is necessary.

More About Ilana Estelle:

Living with cerebral palsy is enormously difficult. But what if you never knew you had it? This is the incredible story of Ilana Estelle. Born the second of premature twins, an hour apart, from a young age Ilana knew she was different, but for all the wrong reasons.

A child of the '60s, Ilana experienced first-hand the way that disability was: so often brushed under the carpet, not spoken about. Her constant physical and mental struggles made her feel isolated, alone, frustrated, and misunderstood… and it took 46 years for her to find out why. Part memoir, part motivational guide, Cerebral Palsy: A Story: Finding the Calm After The Storm is Ilana’s open and honest journey from an angry, confused child -- knowing something was wrong, not knowing what was wrong, what her disability was, or that there was a diagnosis -- to the real her: a courageous woman using her experiences and lessons to create inspiring messages about mental and physical health, positivity, resilience and change.
