Feeling wired, tired, and stretched too thin? You’re not alone—and you’re not broken.

In Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired, Dr. Pam Stephens Lehenbauer, a respected researcher, epidemiologist, clinician, and thought leader on joy, wonder, and well-being, offers a compassionate and eye-opening look at why so many people feel chronically stressed, fatigued, and disconnected. She also reveals why the traditional wellness model, first conceived decades ago, is no longer serving us.

Part science-backed reflection, part celebration of the world’s awe-inspiring details, this book blends thought-provoking commentary with bite-sized facts and trivia designed to reignite our sense of childlike wonder. From the mysteries of the cosmos to the miracles of the human body and so much in between, each chapter encourages readers to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with nature, with curiosity, and with what truly matters.

This isn’t a how-to guide or conventional self-help manual. Instead, it’s a gentle, joyful invitation to look up, look around, and rediscover the extraordinary in the ordinary. Through powerful insights and warm encouragement, Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired helps readers step off the “happiness = wellness” hamster wheel, take a big step back, and breathe deeply. It creates space to experience the tears, the chills, and the thrills of a world filled with wonder.

Perfect for anyone seeking a mental reset or a moment of inspiration, Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired is both a balm for the soul and a spark for the spirit.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on book summary, so please read the synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: 4.5 STARS. Within the pages of Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired, author Dr. Pam Stephens Lehenbauer offers readers a respite from the world where we're assaulted not only by toxic negativity, but also toxic positivity, which she explains can be equally problematic. Lehenbauer provides a new perspective on well-being in this well-written, well-edited, and well-researched gem of a book.

Even reading the Introduction to Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired, readers will find themselves nodding in agreement, muttering yes, yes, yes as the author outlines many of today’s challenges. With all the demands and expectations put upon us to look and feel a certain way, Lehenbauer advises us to step back and reassess, and she defines “wonder” as an emotion – an accurate definition that I’d never considered despite feeling it many, many times.

Additionally, those early pages include a not-to-be missed list of ten to-dos designed to engage wonder, and a download link to a free guide and workbook to use as a companion to reading Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired. This guide rounds out what I was expecting and is a perfect complement to take the book to the next level. Honestly, I’d like to see it included in the book in future updates.

Though the introductory pages contain the crux of the book, everything after is designed to bring joy, amazement, and wonder. Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired is almost like a reference book for finding inspiration. The majority of the book is filled with statistics, trivia, myths, and both serious and giggle-worthy truths, all to wonder-fy the reader. Every reader will be reminded of the wonder of life and things bigger than us. Our bodies, for example, are truly miraculous in how they function and perform for us, but how often do we think about the miracle of the myriad components working together?

Highlights for this reader are:

*the affirmation that talking to my plants matters. (they’re responding)

*there’s such a thing as the nightmarish Zombie Ant Fungus (EEK)

*there’s a collective noun for a group of jellyfish (a smack!)

*the “Timeless Wonders of Art and Architecture” (but what about the Marfa Lights?)

*the ”Ordinary But Extraordinary List for Wonder, Joy, and Gratitude”  (pages of small joys)

It’s too much to sit and read this book straight through because of the sheer quantity of information contained in Wonder and Joy for the Wired and Tired. But I absolutely will revisit it, particularly when life’s feeling heavy, but also to make a habit of feeling wonder. I can choose a category (flowers? stars? my digestive system?) and be reminded of the miracles of each. And with the companion workbook, there’s opportunity to dig deeper and reflect upon them.

“Please take time to pause and appreciate the many gifts available to you from your everyday life and consider how you might help others find wonder and joy.”

Granted, I kinda have the perfect setting to be receptive to this book and mindset: a vacay in a spectacular, wonder-inducing place. Nonetheless, there are plenty of takeaways for the reader, no matter the situation or surroundings, and a big takeaway is to show gratitude for this astonishing universe and all that’s within it.

HALL WAYS AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: What a well-written, emotional read, but it was probably too soon for me to read a book like this. Lots of tears, but it was cathartic and hopeful, too. I'll write down all my feels when my own losses aren't so fresh. But I highly recommend it, and the narration was top notch.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
by JAMES S. JULIANA

Genre:  Adult NonFiction (18+), 176 pages

Categories: Self-Help, Mental Health
Publisher: Self-Published
Release dates: October 2019

Content Rating: PG. This self-help book deals with adult subject matter of mental illness.

Book Description:

Are you one of the millions who reside within a secret life, a life which constantly feels out of your own control: Are you plagued by repetitive thoughts and/or actions which interfere with your daily activities? The author lived for more than 40 years with an undiagnosed form of mental

illness, a phobia now known as OCD: obsessive-compulsive disorder. His emotional pain and suffering were at times almost unmanageable. In his mid-sixties, the author, a loving husband, father and accomplished high school teacher and athletic coach, discovered a unique psychologist

within the Denver therapeutic community who utilizes a radical but highly successful treatment that's allowed the author to control his OCD symptoms almost 100%. A Secret Life is one of the few books written by an OCD sufferer and descries in detail the pain and chaos living with this illness can cause not just the victim, but those closest to him.

This story doesn't stop there, but provides readers with options and advice dealing with OCD from someone who broke the curse of living a secret life. Now he's ready to share his story in order to help others.

"Which would I choose --
helping people with OCD or coaching football?"
Guest Post by Jim Juliana:
Participation in sports has been an integral component of my life since I was a child. I love the competition, the physicality and the joy of success which sports provide. I also enjoy the camaraderie of team sports. Throughout my career as a classroom teacher, I have been a head varsity coach in four different sports. Coaching sports has been my life.

However, since overcoming the symptoms of my OCD four years ago, and being able to live a normal daily life; enjoying my wife, children, grandchildren and friends, today I think I would choose being an effective spokesperson on behalf of those suffering with OCD, rather than being a successful head football coach at the high school level. Assisting other people with OCD to learn to live happy and productive lives, despite having OCD myself, seems to me to be more important and meaningful.

Meet the Author:
Jim Juliana was a hard-working family man with a devoted wife and adoring children. As a teacher, he taught numerous subjects over a 28-year career, was an assistant principal/athletic director for three years and mentored generations of youngsters in the classroom and in athletics. Juliana was a coach for forty years at the high school level.

Coach Juliana has been a part of two state championship teams, a city championship team and several league title teams. He spent two years as a college instructor and football coach. But Jim Juliana had a secret life, one over which he had no control. For most of his life, he also fought - and eventually defeated - an embarrassing and almost debilitating OCD. OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that affects three to five million adults in the US each year.

OCD involves irrational fears or repeated thoughts or obsessions that drive an individual to engage in repetitive behaviors or compulsions. Jim Juliana's life was finally changed when he found a therapist whose treatment all but eliminated his OCD incidents. A Secret Life chronicles Juliana's battle against his OCD and gives readers options and information for treatment based on his experiences.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: ✪✪✪✪✪ BLOWN AWAY. Hands down, this is the best YA book I have read in some time. Such a unique premise. Victoria Scott has crafted a completely screwed-up world with completely screwed-up characters, but both work the readers in an unexpected, almost obsessive way. The flaws on these characters aren't warts -- they are festering boils; yet, Scott manipulates readers to feel not only horribly disgusted, but drawn to look more closely and ultimately, even look past the flaws. Just as main character Domino has an alter-ego, it was almost as if the reader takes one, too. I find myself rationalizing horrific behaviors. The lines between good and evil, right and wrong, justice and injustice have all been blurred.

"The slums grew arms and legs and crawled toward their shiny homes and manicured lawns, and then swallowed them whole without remorse."

Scott's talent is not only in her fabulous writing style (and immaculate editing. BRAVO.), but in the imaginative way she conveys mood, tone, setting, and character. The dialogue is authentic and well balanced with the narrative, and the sprinkling of figurative language is powerful, resulting in images that stick. In keeping with the title of the book and with the volatile nature of the main character, Domino Ray, there are repeated allusions to bombs and their impending detonation -- all which build up to a truly explosive finish to the book.  And in alter-ego Wilson, the allusion is taken further as he is a ticking time bomb within Domino, ready to unleash his devastation. And then there is Cain. . .

"Cain. I let that name sit on my tongue like
a peppermint. It burns with flavor."

This guy. He and his story bring out all the feels. Readers (well, this reader anyhow) will appreciate that despite the slow burning sexiness in this messed-up guy, Violet Grenade is not a romance, there's no insta-love, and the focus of the story is not all about boy meets girl. There is so much substance to the relationships between characters (ALL the characters).

I don't think it was possible for me to read the last quarter of the book any faster, and I loved that I was dead wrong, time after time, about what was going to happen. Scott planted all kinds of red herrings and set-up mystery after mystery for readers to figure out (incorrectly, for the most part). There are a few unanswered questions at the end, but it's okay; it's almost like each reader might need a different answer so each of us can decide what we want for the characters.

Sensitive readers be warned -- this book gets pretty dark. There is substantial violence, sexual references, and harrowing scenes that could be upsetting (see "screwed-up," above). I must give snaps to Victoria Scott here, too, as she doesn't get overly or unnecessarily graphic; she trusts her readers to get it.

Thank you, thank you to Chapter by Chapter Book Blog Tours, Entangled Teen, and the author for sharing this book with me in exchange for my honest opinion -- the only kind I give.  Violet Grenade is going to stay with me a long, long time.
