"What I hoped for in writing my book"
by Ilana Estelle

I know what I deal with now and understand my disability. Without the book I could never have had that.

Initially, I never thought about my book in that way. I wanted and needed to know what was wrong with me and for me to be able to piece my symptoms together for the first time. I knew I struggled with certain elements of a disability. Having completed the book now, I have come face to face with my disability for the first time, and that feels good. I also have closure. Without the book and with my blog, I could never have achieved that either.

So overall, writing the book has been a cathartic experience, it has brought a knowing and understanding where I previously had none. It has empowered me to want to do better and be better. I would like my readers to take away the overriding message of positivity and that we very much have the tools to change our lives where we think it is necessary.

More About Ilana Estelle:

Living with cerebral palsy is enormously difficult. But what if you never knew you had it? This is the incredible story of Ilana Estelle. Born the second of premature twins, an hour apart, from a young age Ilana knew she was different, but for all the wrong reasons.

A child of the '60s, Ilana experienced first-hand the way that disability was: so often brushed under the carpet, not spoken about. Her constant physical and mental struggles made her feel isolated, alone, frustrated, and misunderstood… and it took 46 years for her to find out why. Part memoir, part motivational guide, Cerebral Palsy: A Story: Finding the Calm After The Storm is Ilana’s open and honest journey from an angry, confused child -- knowing something was wrong, not knowing what was wrong, what her disability was, or that there was a diagnosis -- to the real her: a courageous woman using her experiences and lessons to create inspiring messages about mental and physical health, positivity, resilience and change.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: I was already in love with this coloring book/quotation book set as soon as I finished the introduction. Author Annette Bridges writes that the illustrations were all inspired by photographs of her and her daughter, Jennifer, taken at various stages and in various places throughout Jennifer's life.  But fear not, moms of boys! As a bonus and to keep things balanced for those who have a son (or four, in my case, plus a daughter), there are plenty of illustrations that have a precious little boy with his mother. The inspiration for those comes from the two sons of the illustrator, Lesley Vernon.

And let's just talk about the illustrations. . . they are fabulous, whether you are looking at the coloring book's black and white versions or the quotation book's full color versions. Each page is highly detailed which, in the coloring book, creates for the reader (color-er!) plenty of opportunities for creativity with color choices and techniques. The quotation book depicts the same pages as in the coloring book, but they really pop to life with vibrant colors and the same uplifting affirmations. With the coloring already done, the reader can read, relax, reflect, and refresh

"If you can see the end of your dream, you're not dreaming big enough."

Every single one of the affirmations in the books is nod-worthy and inspirational.  The one quoted above is one of my favorite pieces of advice from the books, and it's the page I chose to color first. With my baby in his twentieth year, it's been a long time since I have done any coloring. (Well, not as long as you'd think because *confession* -- I colored the parts of the microscope for him in 9th or 10th grade so he could do his math homework. But I digress.) When I decided to color, I set everything else aside, and I was completely focused for easily 45 minutes: coloring was a complete escape. And it made me happy. And I felt like I had accomplished something. Check it out! Go me!
I highly recommend getting the pair of books for yourself and then several sets for all your besties! We all could use a little coloring and a lot of inspiration in our lives, and author Annette Bridges has made it easy to get both. (Take it up a notch, and get Bridges's "Color Your World Party Box" that has both books, colored pencils, and other goodies! Treat yourself!)

Thank you to the author and Lone Star Book Blog Tours for providing me print copies of both books in exchange for my  honest review -- the only kind I give.
