A Madness Unmade ~ Book Review

A MADNESS UNMADE
The Deathly Inheritance Duology, Book One
By E.K. Larson-Burnett

Young Adult / Gaslamp Fantasy / Coming of Age
March 3, 2024
271 pages

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Initially drawn to the cover, then intrigued by the premise, by page five I was immersed in the magic of A MADNESS UNMADE: THE DEATHLY INHERITANCE DUOLOGY, BOOK ONE. Though there are elements reminiscent of books by authors like J.K. Rowling, V.E. Schwab, T.J. Klune, Ransom Riggs, plus some Haunted Mansion vibe, none of this story felt copy-cat-ish. Author E.K. Larson-Burnett managed to mix all the best magical morsels together and put her own inventive mark on A MADNESS UNMADE, creating a style all her own.

Laurel was “feeling as though she had been dunked in a goblet of champagne, dizzy and buzzing and alive.”

There are many subplots happening in A MADNESS UNMADE, but the teacher in me noted and enjoyed the underlying message of different people having different learning styles. While main-character Laurel’s first tutor is impatient and intolerant of Laurel’s struggles to learn what she must as Guardian of the Underhallow, when he gives up on her, it’s a gift. Laurel’s second tutor recognizes her challenges  and adjusts his lessons accordingly. And she blooms! Seeing Laurel grow in her self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-acceptance is wonderful to watch unfold. The icing on the cake is that she has love and support from a group of caring ghosts!

The undead in A MADNESS UNMADE are, ironically, fully fleshed out characters. Add-in that because of Laurel’s magic, she can experience their touch and fully engage with them makes the storyline even more robust, and unique among most ghost stories. There is a wide cast of ghosts (Revenants), but at start of the book, there’s a helpful section titled, “The Rumbroom Family Ancestry” that helps keep Laurel’s family straight. (Though I think a family tree visual would have been easier for my learning style. Some relationships are unclear, and I wonder about Genevieve, Laurel’s great-great aunt, who’s never mentioned again. Hmmmm.)

“He towered before her, which would have been intimidating if not for his eyebrows lurching up and down with each word like waltzing black worms.”

In A MADNESS UNMADE,  Larson-Burnett provides readers excellent world building and explanations about the mechanics of how the Revenant world operates. The writing and language are often humorous, and always delightful with cleverly crafted turns of phrase to immerse readers in the time period and tone of the setting. The illustrations sprinkled throughout the story are a welcome addition, too.

“She could no longer pansy-foot in the penumbral presence of its terror.”

Since this is the first book in a duology, I suspected there would be many questions left unanswered, and I wasn’t wrong. Tension ramps up considerably in the last quarter of the book, and readers are left alongside Laurel to puzzle out a whole lot of mysteries. And with the specter of the League for Revenant Reformation and Dissipators looming about, along with their ever-changing Revenant Accords, it feels like the clock is ticking on how much time is left for Laurel and her house full of ghosts to keep their peaceful existence.

“She was a blister rubbed raw, an exposed nerve in a storm of sharp things.”

*BRACE YOURSELF* I have no complaints about the editing. I read an ARC copy and it was pert near perfect. Anyone who follows my reviews knows it is a rare thing when I don’t find editing issues. My only grievance with A MADNESS UNMADE is that the second book isn’t ready NOW.   Meanwhile, I’ll be buying a paperback copy so I can enjoy that cover and maybe revisit Laurel and her ghostly friends while I eagerly anticipate the next installment.

Chameleon: The Summoning ~ Audio Book Blog Tour, Review, and $50 Giveaway!

CHAMELEON: THE SUMMONING
The Forest People, Book 3
BY MAGGIE LYNCH
Narrated by Rachel Jacobs
Length: 5 hours 52 minutes
Series: The Forest People, Book 3
Publisher: Windtree Press
Release date: February 12, 2019
Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy

She turned a man to ashes. He scattered himself across time in multiple dimensions. Can she draw the ashes back in time to save him and prove she is the chosen one?

Surviving the ultimate transformation and the Agnoses predators, Camryn now faces the rise of a new Mazikeen Queen who thinks nothing of calling the darkness for her own needs. With the forest people on the brink of war, she retreats to the solitude of the Cloud Forests. To grieve. To heal. To accept she is the chameleon of prophecy.

But the ancient world proves to be anything but quiet, and she is far from alone. Guided by the first forest people, who are now elemental spirits, Camryn must master the powers of air, earth, water, and fire. Only then can she enlist her thunder dragon, control time itself, and save Dagger from the void.

Even then, her quest is far from over. With the realms of forest and human pitted against each other, one world teeters on extinction while the other tips toward eternal darkness. Only Camryn seeks a balanced resolution and with it, an impossible choice requiring her to make the greatest sacrifice of all.

Chameleon: The Summoning is the third audio book in The Forest People, a YA paranormal fantasy series. If you crave unlikely heroes and heroines, internal and real battles between creation and destruction, and mind-blowing magic, then you’ll love joining Camryn as she finds her true self and fulfills a 1,000-year-old prophecy against all odds.

✪✪✪✪

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. This third installment in The Forest People series picks-up right behind book two and takes readers along as main character Camryn hones her skills to be able to fulfill the prophesy of the Chameleon. (I don't recommend it as stand-alone; readers would miss too much.) Being the Chameleon and carrying all the weight the role brings would be a daunting task for anyone, but for a girl who wasn’t raised within the magical realms of the forest and who is riddled with guilt and fear, at times it seems overwhelming. Fortunately for Camryn, she is surrounded by beings who believe in her and who are committed to helping her develop her skills.

The peripheral characters in Chameleon: The Summoning bring the elemental world into focus for readers -- and Camryn. Endra, the new queen, drips with darkness and malice and magical strengths which made her a character readers will love to hate. (I wanted more!) Then there are the fairy-like ancient first Forest People, who shine with light and goodness. These characters, especially as voiced by Rachel Jacobs, make the scenes come alive when Camryn is being trained to use her elemental powers.

The strength and power and leadership of women is a recurring theme of the book, and there were scenes that seemed to channel other powerful females with whom readers may be familiar (Grandmother Willow from Disney’s Pocahontas, Bella from the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer). Messages of friendship, respect, and the deep bonds women form as they support each other abound. Equally powerful is the message of what happens when hatred, jealousy, and ego corrupt a person.

“If the world is all light, then what is illuminated?”

Chameleon: The Summoning is all about balance, cause and effect, good and evil. The struggles within the story are both external between peoples and tribes and internal within various characters as they are pushed and pulled with decisions and quandaries. There is a lot going on with a huge cast of characters, numerous tribes, many sub-plots -- and little resolution -- which makes the story feel disjointed at times. (The ending is satisfying but a little vague and leaves me with more questions than answers.) But the stories keep moving forward and never stall for long, and the multiple story threads make it feel like author Maggie Lynch is setting the stage for future books – I hope so! There is a world of possibility in this series.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: In this third book of the series, narrator Rachel Jacobs really hits her stride; this is the best narration of the three. Her pacing is perfect, and she adds even more voices to the mix with the addition of Endra and the elemental first Forest People. Young or old, male or female, good or evil, dragon or human, Rachel manages to assign a voice that’s unique and memorable for each character. 5/5 Stars here.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. Chameleon: The Choosing is the second book in the Forest People series and is a good follow-up to book one, Chameleon: The Awakening, which I advise reading first. Author Maggie Faire again grabs readers’ attention from page one with immediate drama and tension, but in The Choosing, there are two early and unexpected twists that I find make this book unique in the typical teen love triangle sub-plots. Kudos to Faire!

In The Choosing, main character Camryn is discovering more of herself and her magical gifts, and readers are being further immersed into the world of the forest people. Part of the story takes us back into the world of the Agnoses, and more information is uncovered about the lichen mutations and experiments. As a side note, I find it interesting that Camryn doesn’t think about her Agnoses life or miss anything there (Soft toilet paper? A cheeseburger?) After all, the Agnoses world is the contemporary, non-magical, parallel world where Camryn was raised through the age of fifteen. Granted, it was a hard life for her, but she’s 100% moved on. On the other hand, who would dwell on the lack of Taco Bell when there is magic and dragons afoot?

Faire really ramps-up the descriptions in this book and leans very heavily on figurative language, especially similes and metaphors, to get her points and imagery across to the readers.  The world building within the forest is well-done, and many of the characters are well-drawn so that they are easily imagined. The writing makes readers feel very fly-on-the-wall, observing things as they unfold.

I like that so many of the power players in the book are female and in leadership and highly respected roles within their tribes or communities. Camryn is still struggling with where she fits and is inconsistent with her emotions about it. At times, she’s whiny, weak, and helpless, but other times she’s practically roaring, “I AM the Chameleon,” and she’s confident and powerful. Her inconsistency reminds readers that Camryn is still a teenager and lacks full control of anything. While she’s moving towards some independence by the end of the book, I rolled my eyes some that she continued to be rescued, by males, at the beginning.  I am ready for Camryn to start figuring things out on her own and rescuing herself. The ending of The Choosing is perfect with a change in point-of-view that leaves readers hopeful and curious about what’s coming next. I am counting on book three, Chameleon: The Summoning, to deliver answers and another satisfying, highly imaginative story.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Listening to the audio book continues to be a bit challenging because of the numerous and complex tribe names and new characters being introduced.  Narrator Rachel Jacobs again delivers an excellent listening experience with well-voiced characters and good pacing. (I listened at 1.3x on the Authors Direct platform.) There are still some scattered mispronunciations that may catch the listener’s ear, but her performance evokes the right emotions and responses readers should have to the action and the drama unfolding in the story.
