Selena Flood is a fighter of preternatural talent. But not even her quick fists and nimble feet could save her parents from the forces of New Canaan, the most ruthless and powerful of the despotic kingdoms populating America-that-was.

Forced to flee the tyrannical state with her younger brother Simon in tow, Selena is now the last chance for peace in a continent on the verge of complete destruction.

In her pocket is a data stick, the contents of which cost her parents their lives. Selena must now ensure it reaches the Republic of California—a lone beacon of liberty shining across a vast and barren wasteland—before it’s too late.

Between New Canaan and California stretch the Middle Wastes: thousands of desolate miles home to murderers, thieves, and a virulent strain of grass called yellow locust that has made growing food all but impossible. So when Selena and Simon stagger into Fallowfield, an oasis of prosperity amidst the poisoned plains, everything seems too good to be true—including the warm welcome they receive from the town’s leader, a peculiar man known only as The Mayor.

As Selena delves deeper into the sinister secrets of this seemingly harmless refuge, she soon learns there is a much darker side to Fallowfield and the man who runs it. Before long, she must call upon the skills she honed in the fighting pits of New Canaan to ensure not only her own survival, but that of her brother, in whom the Mayor has taken far too keen an interest.

And she’d better act fast, for an all-out war inches ever closer, and New Canaan is never as far away as it seems.

GUEST POST
If I Knew Then What I Know Now About Writing
Guest Post by Author Justin Joschko

I wrote my first novel at 18. It was called Leo’s Trip North and told the story of a boy who wakes up one day to find everyone in his city has vanished. He makes his way through a strangely altered landscape filled with bizarre creatures on his quest to the nearest big city, Toronto, where he hopes to encounter someone who, like him, remains unchanged.

I wrote the book in about three months, read it over once, and sent it out to agents. After a couple of rejections I decided it wasn’t so great, put it aside, and forgot about it. Twelve years later, my debut novel, Yellow Locust, has hit the shelves. It’s the first novel I’ve published, but clearly not the first I’ve written (it’s actually the third; my master’s thesis, "Gorilla Girl," was second).

You might assume that Yellow Locust got a better reception than Leo’s Trip North did, and that’s why it succeeded where my first book failed. But the truth isn’t so tidy. Yellow Locust took several rewrites and dozens of queries before it landed me an agent, and another year of querying from him until it found a publisher. I’d always heard publishing was a slow and painful process, but I don’t think I appreciated the extent of it until I actually went through it.

I’m happy with Yellow Locust as a debut. I’ve definitely grown better as a writer over the years, and the work I’m showing the world is from a practiced artist (albeit one who’s still learning) rather than a total neophyte. But I sometimes wonder if I should have tried harder with Leo’s Trip North. Yellow Locust taught me that a story can still be worth telling if the book it’s trapped in is deeply flawed, and that revision and reworking aren’t sins.

Looking back on it now, I see parts of Leo that don’t work, concepts that are unclear, characters whose motivations seem skewed. But there’s a kernel of a story in there that I still like in it, about a boy who loses one home and ventures out to find another. Maybe I’ll go back to it someday, but it seems too far in the past at this point. I’m not the person I was when I wrote it, and I think that particularly story was best told by a young man leaving home for the first time, heading off to university (in Toronto, no less, the destination of the book’s protagonist). I think the time to revise was then, not now.

At the time, a novel seemed to me like a sacred, crystalline thing. Mess with its edges and you might shatter it into a million hopeless fragments. If I’d known how much tinkering it would take to get the first novel I published on the shelves so many years later, I might not have been so afraid to rework the first one I wrote.

DELETED SCENE

My favorite deleted scene from the first two books in the Weirdo Academy series is one that never actually existed – a twist-filled epilogue to The Impossible Pitcher. How am I going to talk about the big gasp-inducing ending I had planned if you haven’t read the books yet?!

Let’s give this a try: When you read The Accidental Quarterback, you’ll notice there’s an epilogue written in the third person. It’s a jarring change from the rest of the novel, which is written with first person narration from the hero, Alex Ptuiac. Those final few pages are a quick look at a mysterious man in the stands at a football game speaking with what appears to be his partner (I’m really trying not to spoil anything here, as you can see). It’s implied that this shadowy figure is up to no good.

So when I wrote The Impossible Pitcher a few years ago, I had another epilogue in mind with the same concept – after the whole book was once again narrated by Alex, the final scene would be third-person narration of another evil figure. But I was running up against a deadline, and when I handed what I thought was the unfinished book to some early readers, I casually mentioned I was tacking on a soon-to-be-written epilogue.

But they all agreed after reading the book that they loved the ending I had and that an epilogue wasn’t necessary.

That means one thing: You’re going to have to wait until the third Weirdo Academy installment to see what I had planned.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR NICOLE CONWAY
How has your formal education influenced or impacted your writing?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I would say yes, my formal education did influence my writing, but not in the ways you might expect. I never took any creative writing courses in college. I did, however, take LOTS of Latin, classical history, and mythology courses! I’ve always had a passion for Roman history and the Latin language. Originally, I wanted to be a Latin teacher. But, alas, marrying an Air Force pilot means you move all the time—which isn’t great for a profession like teaching where the goal is to eventually retire. It all worked out in the wash, though. I love my career as an author and I always find myself integrating aspects of classical mythology and culture into my writing. The one actual writing course I did take and find useful was a Technical Business Writing class my senior year of college. We learned to write formal documents like resumes, etc. Very useful!

Also, not sure if this counts, but my professor for my Shakespeare courses was insanely handsome, always wore a tailored suit, and is the inspiration behind one of my characters from my upcoming Teen Urban Fantasy Novel!

Along those same lines, you have cranked-out a lot of books in a short time since graduation, plus you are a mom and wife -- how do you balance it all?

It’s not easy. Really, it has been an absolute fight. The transition into motherhood is incredibly hard, or at least it was for me, and writing is one of the things that has actually helped keep me sane and feel less like I am “losing myself” to the role of motherhood. I think that’s kind of an unsung struggle for all new moms. Motherhood is wonderful, but it is messy, stressful, and difficult at times. In a matter of months you are expected to adjust to this new role you have to play, with this tiny human that’s totally dependant on you, and for many military moms that means doing it on your own without the help of family. You’re trying to meet the impossible expectations of society to be the fit, healthy, beautiful, happy, positive, nurturing, all natural, organic, balanced, super wife, and mom. It’s impossible not to have those moments feeling defeated and I know, for me, I grieved for the life I’d had before because no one warned me that I would miss who I was before. Not that being a mom isn’t a beautiful gift – it truly is – but it comes at a price. So writing became my therapy and I always make it a priority to have time to do it. It’s my consolation when I’m lonely (which is a lot). It’s my stress and anxiety relief. It keeps me grounded and focused and also allows me be “Nicole” instead of “Mommy” all the time.

If you could date one of your characters from SAVAGE, who would it be and why?

Tough one!! It would be a tie between Prince Aubren and Kiran. On the one hand, Aubren is kind of the whole package. He’s handsome, chivalrous, brave, and the kind of bashful that makes a guy totally adorable. But on the other hand, Kiran has that whole mysterious, brooding warrior thing that I can’t help but be drawn to. I guess if I HAD to chose, I would pick Aubren.

What’s your funniest flaw?

I have “invisibrows.”. It’s that problem when your hair is really light blonde and you’re also super pale so it looks like you have no eyebrows. I have to draw them in, and I’m always worried it looks bad!

Do you have a mantra for writing and/or for life?

Absolutely! I have two, actually.

First and foremost is, “If I’m not enjoying writing it, no one is going to enjoy reading it.” Readers 100000% can pick up on authors’ states of mind and whether or not they are “into” a book or even a particular scene. If I find myself dragging my feet or not feeling into it, I will go back and start that scene, chapter, or even the whole book over. It’s not worth doing unless you do it right!

Second is something I picked up a couple of years ago. I can’t even remember where I heard it, exactly, but it rung so true. The saying was “The first chapter sells the book, the last chapter sells the next book.” To me, that means you have to pull no punches with the beginning, get the plot moving, make the reader connect – but you also have to end that way. Leave an impression that makes them hungry for more.

Law One: A summoner is responsible for all creatures it lets through from the netherworld.

Dacie Cantar wishes someone had explained the Laws of Summoning to her before she watched a shadowy creature crawl out of a painting at the local arcade. At least it explains the strange things she's witnessed since moving in with her great-aunt, after her mother’s untimely death. But who wants to be followed by shadows the rest of their lif e? Add that to being stalked by a strange boy at school, who just might be her Tovaros (aka soulmate), it’s about all Dacie can handle in her new life.
As she nears her seventeenth birthday, will she be ready for her new responsibilities, or will the shadows that stalked her mother until her death, finally consume Dacie, too? And then there’s Law Two…

Excerpt:
When we pull up at the front of the house, everything is dark. Katya must be out. I stay quiet as I close the door and walk onto the front porch.

“Don’t be mad,” Tryan says grabbing my hand and pulling me back against his chest. He looks down into my face. “Demons aren’t trustworthy,” he says. “Just remember that.”

I relax my body against his and Tryan leans down and kisses me. His lips are soft and gentle, and I melt against him. The stress of this last month melts away.

A shiver runs through my body and Tryan mistakes it for a chill. “Let’s go inside,” he says, pulling my hand toward the door.

As Tryan grabs the handle, the door creaks open. It’s not locked? He looks back at me with a frown creased across his brow. I push past him into the house.

“Katya?” I call out into the darkness. Nothing. Lights flicker into the kitchen through the open patio doors on the other side of the house.

“Come on,” Tryan says pulling me outside with a finger to his lips. “This way.”

We slowly creep around the side of the house, following the flickering lights to the back yard. Between the tall fence and the wooden siding of the house, we’re sitting ducks. We slow down as we reach the back corner and Tryan grabs my hand.

“Let me go first,” he says. “Please. Trust me.”

I nod and hold back as Tryan passes in front of me. He peers around the corner, then holds up a hand for me to stop as he disappears into the backyard.

I shuffle around the corner, but Tryan is nowhere to be seen. Lights are hanging along the fence to the back of the property, flickering on and off.

“Tryan?” I whisper. No answer. I look back. Where is he?

“Tryan?” I call out a little louder this time.

Project Emergence ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Blog Tour, Excerpt, & Giveaway!

Title: PROJECT EMERGENCE
Author: Jamie Zakian
Pub. Date: March 14, 2017
Publisher: Month9Books
Format: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 292

An ancient Hopi myth says people arrived on tiny silver pods that fell from the sky.

But the truth is far more terrifying.

Two-hundred fifty-eight teens are sent from a dying Earth to a terraformed Mars as part of the Emergence Program, mankind’s last hope before solar flares finish off their planet and species. Among the brave pioneers are sixteen-year-old Joey Westen and her twin brother, Jesse.

After only minutes in space, something triggers a total ship lock down.

With the help of their roommates, the Matsuda twins (notorious hackers and shady secret-keepers), Joey and Jesse stumble onto an extremist plot to sabotage the Emergence Program.

But Joey and Jesse didn’t travel to the deepest pits of space and leave their mother behind to be picked off in a high-tech tin can. They’ll lie, hack, and even kill to survive the voyage and make it to Mars.

EXCERPT:
Joey grabbed her brother’s hand the instant he climbed off the van’s step. People shuffled all around the wide-open room, probably watching her act like a baby, but she couldn’t let go. Fear stole her will. It could have been the towering room of glass walls and silver beams that encompassed her, the barrage of strange faces, or the fact that she’d never see her mother again, but gloom tainted this moment. Holding her brother’s hand quelled a fraction of her inner-turmoil, so she planned to keep doing it despite her sissy appearance.
A soft voice streamed from a kiosk of video screens, repeating the Space Center’s famed slogan.
Three days on the state-of-the-art R23 shuttle, strolling through green grass, swimming in cool oceans.
Everything she memorized from the letter in her backpack.
“Look, there’s check-in,” Jesse said, tugging her from the display of white sandy beaches.
She inched through the crowd, close to his side. They filed into a rowdy line, her palm sweating against his skin.
“The Westen twins, I presume,” a high-pitched voice echoed from behind them.
In one swift move, Joey shook free from Jesse’s grasp and whirled around. An ultra-posh Asian girl leered down, and Joey stood tall. Her eyes wandered to the near identical boy at her side, bearing the same long jet-black hair. Another set of twins.
“How did you know our name?” Jesse asked. Joey nudged his arm, pulling his gaze from the low cut of the girl’s sparkly shirt.
“We know the names of all the twins on this ship,” she said, her hand hoisting to her hip.
“First and last,” the boy added.
Joey stifled a chuckle. Twins who finished each other’s sentences; this trip was going to be stellar. The line shuffled forward, and the small group edged up a few paces.
“How many twins are on this flight?” Jesse asked, glancing between the pair.
“Fourteen, including us,” she replied.
“Well, fourteen sets,” the boy corrected, turning to his sister. “That actually makes twenty-eight twins.”
“But twins is plural, so it would be fourteen,” she argued, a hint of red flaring her cheeks.
“Yeah, but, you knew who we were,” Joey said. “We didn’t even know there were other twins here. Is there, like, a manual we didn’t get or something?”

About Jamie: Jamie Zakian is a full-time writer who consumes the written word as equally as oxygen. Living in South Jersey with her husband and rowdy family, she enjoys farming, archery, and blazing new trails on her 4wd quad, when not writing of course. She aspires to one day write at least one novel in every genre of fiction.
