If I Knew Then What I Know Now About Writing

I wrote my first novel at 18. It was called Leo’s Trip North and told the story of a boy who wakes up one day to find everyone in his city has vanished. He makes his way through a strangely altered landscape filled with bizarre creatures on his quest to the nearest big city, Toronto, where he hopes to encounter someone who, like him, remains unchanged.

I wrote the book in about three months, read it over once, and sent it out to agents. After a couple of rejections I decided it wasn’t so great, put it aside, and forgot about it. Twelve years later, my debut novel, Yellow Locust, has hit the shelves. It’s the first novel I’ve published, but clearly not the first I’ve written (it’s actually the third; my master’s thesis, "Gorilla Girl," was second).

You might assume that Yellow Locust got a better reception than Leo’s Trip North did, and that’s why it succeeded where my first book failed. But the truth isn’t so tidy. Yellow Locust took several rewrites and dozens of queries before it landed me an agent, and another year of querying from him until it found a publisher. I’d always heard publishing was a slow and painful process, but I don’t think I appreciated the extent of it until I actually went through it.

I’m happy with Yellow Locust as a debut. I’ve definitely grown better as a writer over the years, and the work I’m showing the world is from a practiced artist (albeit one who’s still learning) rather than a total neophyte. But I sometimes wonder if I should have tried harder with Leo’s Trip North. Yellow Locust taught me that a story can still be worth telling if the book it’s trapped in is deeply flawed, and that revision and reworking aren’t sins.

Looking back on it now, I see parts of Leo that don’t work, concepts that are unclear, characters whose motivations seem skewed. But there’s a kernel of a story in there that I still like in it, about a boy who loses one home and ventures out to find another. Maybe I’ll go back to it someday, but it seems too far in the past at this point. I’m not the person I was when I wrote it, and I think that particularly story was best told by a young man leaving home for the first time, heading off to university (in Toronto, no less, the destination of the book’s protagonist). I think the time to revise was then, not now.

At the time, a novel seemed to me like a sacred, crystalline thing. Mess with its edges and you might shatter it into a million hopeless fragments. If I’d known how much tinkering it would take to get the first novel I published on the shelves so many years later, I might not have been so afraid to rework the first one I wrote.

I sometimes hate telling people how long it took me to get my first book published (ten plus years) because I'm afraid it will discourage them. Though if there is one thing I’ve learned on this long publishing journey, it’s that you have to find a way to overcome a steady stream of things that will discourage you, and every person’s path to publication is different.

Like a lot of writers, part of why it took me so long is because real life interfered with my ability to concentrate on both improving my writing and on figuring out the publishing industry. You need to work on both to get published. Luckily, there is time. It may seem like everyone else gets published at a young age with their first book, but that is just because those stories get passed around on social media. You don’t hear much about the majority of us who work for years before lightning strikes.

Even though you hear the refrain, ‘write what you love,’ there are also trends in publishing that lead to a more accurate refrain is ‘write what you love, but it may not be popular enough to publish right now.’ Back when I started the first book of the Torch World series, my agent at the time wasn’t interested in science fiction. Very few agents were. I wanted to write the book anyway since I’m stubborn that way.

So I’m thrilled the story has found its way into the world. Month9 is a good fit for the story since they publish thriller/adventure type stories in several genres. I think I’m like many Month9 readers -- I’m looking for an exciting story, and I’m willing to read a lot of different kinds of books. I hope you’ll read this story and when you do, know it’s written by a reader just like you.

I love the way my cover designer really pulled in all of the elements of the story. The setting has a real steampunk vibe, so we used gears in the background and put the silhouette of the Charles Bridge on the bottom to commemorate Prague, the city where the story is set. The colors are bright, and the image really catches your eye. You can tell it was inspired by Caraval and This Savage Song. I’m obsessed.

How Libraries are Important to Me

I have many wonderful memories of visiting libraries as a young girl. It was our local public library that made me a reader. I remember going to story times as a girl at our library. When I was ten or so and was searching for a book to read but couldn’t decide on one, it was a librarian who asked me if I liked stories set in a fantasy or the real world. I told her fantasy. She rushed off and returned with a book she thought I would love. It was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis. And she was right. I instantly fell in love with the story and checked it out many times over the next few years. Fantasy books had become an escape for me. Whenever things were tough, I’d get lost in them. It was because of this book and the librarian who suggested it that I became a fantasy author.

Not only do librarians select and shelve books, they inspire reading and have a great wealth of knowledge about books. Need to know something? A librarian can find it for you. Librarians are guides into other worlds via the books they share with others. Librarians can change lives by just suggesting a book. I know it changed mine.

Without librarians there wouldn’t be libraries. The libraries in the Library Jumpers series are beautiful. Some hold the oldest books from history. But it’s the public libraries in our communities that inspire and educate visitors about art, literature, history, and music. Our school librarians provide books to students who can’t afford to buy them and wouldn’t read otherwise. Librarians help authors get their books into the hands of readers who may not be able to buy them at a store. Libraries are the gateways and librarians are the gatekeepers to our imaginations.

Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother's animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. With kids of all ages populating Brenda's world, it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical for both younger readers and the young at heart. And because she married her prince charming, there's always a romance warming the pages. Her favorite books are The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Kings Row by Henry Bellamann, and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.
