Summary:

Earth scientists and their families stationed on the remote planet of Fosaan were promised a tropical vacation-like experience. But Fosaan, devastated from an apocalyptic event nearly three-hundred years ago, is full of lethal predators and dangerous terrain. 

Earthers are forbidden to go beyond the safety zone of their settlement and must not engage the small population of reclusive Fosaanians, descendants of the survivors. Sixteen-year-old Quinn Neen plans to do both of those things.

When Quinn discovers a beautiful Fosaanian girl named Mira stealing food from his family’s living unit, he soon learns Earth’s government may not be telling the whole truth about Fosaan and the cause of the past disaster. 

There are some who to restore the planet to its former glory by any means necessary. Quinn finds himself caught between his loyalty to his own people and what is right for Mira and her people. 

Before he can decide what to do, the scientists are taken captive, stranding the young Earthers on Fosaan. 

Quinn must go from renegade to leader and convince Mira to become an ally in a fight against an enemy whose very existence threatens their lives and the future of those both on Fosaan and at home.

I sometimes hate telling people how long it took me to get my first book published (ten plus years) because I'm afraid it will discourage them. Though if there is one thing I’ve learned on this long publishing journey, it’s that you have to find a way to overcome a steady stream of things that will discourage you, and every person’s path to publication is different.

Like a lot of writers, part of why it took me so long is because real life interfered with my ability to concentrate on both improving my writing and on figuring out the publishing industry. You need to work on both to get published. Luckily, there is time. It may seem like everyone else gets published at a young age with their first book, but that is just because those stories get passed around on social media. You don’t hear much about the majority of us who work for years before lightning strikes.

Even though you hear the refrain, ‘write what you love,’ there are also trends in publishing that lead to a more accurate refrain is ‘write what you love, but it may not be popular enough to publish right now.’ Back when I started the first book of the Torch World series, my agent at the time wasn’t interested in science fiction. Very few agents were. I wanted to write the book anyway since I’m stubborn that way.

So I’m thrilled the story has found its way into the world. Month9 is a good fit for the story since they publish thriller/adventure type stories in several genres. I think I’m like many Month9 readers -- I’m looking for an exciting story, and I’m willing to read a lot of different kinds of books. I hope you’ll read this story and when you do, know it’s written by a reader just like you.

Bonds of Steel (Law & Crucible Saga 3)

On a routine trip across the asteroid field, the robot, Del, and unregistered AI, Vee, meet trouble. With Captain Law and his crew having been put into stasis, their only chance of survival will mean placing themselves at the mercy of what few resources they have. Without a human to assist them, Del and Vee will be vulnerable and so too will the ship and all the lives on board.

Despite their best efforts to avoid unwanted visitors, another ship is en route. Their arrival does not guarantee the safety of those on board, and may ultimately lead to their demise.

With his position on the ship on the line, can Del stave off an attack or are their deaths inevitable?

HALL WAYS: SAGA REVIEW:

 This series of novellas/short stories is pitched as a space opera, and that pretty well fits with the settings all primarily on ships in outer space. Each of the three stories stands alone, though the character of Captain Law and some of his crew are in all three stories.  Each story starts with a little "stage setting" paragraph to save some time and for readers to be able to jump right into the stories.

The first story, No Port to Land, is the darkest of the three stories and takes readers into the horrific places that people go when they are desperate to survive. Author Ioana Visan does a great job of describing the hopelessness and eeriness of the decrepit space cruise ship and the people in various stages of dying aboard. Main character Nia is a survivor and readers will feel for her and what she must tolerate to stay alive.

The second story, Point of Origin, is a separate story from the first, with only a very small connection to an event that happened in No Port to Land.  It was disappointing to not ever know what happened to Nia and her sister Leelee -- they/their fate is never referenced. Readers are introduced to some new characters in this story, including one named Mia. This was initially confusing because I was expecting some continuation of the first story and actually thought Mia WAS Nia and there was a typo or something. Point of Origin provides action and suspense with shoot-outs and tight situations that the crew may or may not escape.

Bonds of Steel is the third story in the Law and Crucible Saga, and it is immediately connected to Point of Origin. This book provides some comedic relief with the story being primarily about the spaceship's Artificial Intelligence (named Vee) and robot (Del), who are left in charge of the ship and find themselves in some trouble. Author Visan does her best characterization here, ironically for the two characters who aren't human.  Readers form very distinct opinions of Vee and Del, and are left with an impression that there will be more from these two in any future.

Overall, these stories are quick and intriguing stories, with interesting concepts, and creative plots with good pacing. There is a lot of background left unexplained and just as many questions left unanswered -- especially in the first two stories. In addition to word use errors and typos, passages are often very long, awkward, and/or difficult to follow. Basically, the book is in need of a bit of editing to remedy plot and writing issues.

Readers who enjoy sci-fi and outer space adventures will enjoy the stories. The books' content for the most part is okay for young adults and up. With the exception of the first book, the language is clean and there aren't any sexual situations, but sensitive readers need to be aware that the first book uses the Fbomb and there is a rape (not explicit) and discussions of rape as the norm.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Award-winning writer Ioana Visan has always dreamed about reaching the stars, but since she can’t, she writes about it. 

After fighting the apocalypse aftermath in Human Instincts, she played with shapeshifters in Blue Moon Café Series: Where Shifters Meet for Drinks, she dealt with vampires in The Impaler Legacy series, she designed prosthetics in Broken People, and she helped wingless fairies in The Weight of a Wing before tackling a space opera saga. 

 Aside from publishing short stories in various Romanian magazines and anthologies, she published a Romanian short story collection, Efectul de nautil, and the Romanian edition of Human Instincts.
