FROM THE STORIES-WORTH-WAITING-FOR PILE. Leila Meacham came into my world in February, 2019, shortly after I took ownership of Lone Star Literary Life -- and she brought so much joy to my life. Not only was she one of the most talented writers (and finished her first book at age 65!), she was one of the highest-caliber humans I've known. Our friendship over the years was precious to me, and even as her own health was failing, she would text me uplifting and optimistic messages of love and support, and her faith never wavered. She gave so much credit to LSLL for the success of Dragonfly, and I feel like she did me the favor by choosing to work with us.  She first mentioned April Storm to me in September of 2020, and she was bound and determined to finish it and told me in November of that year: "You and I have continued business to do...we still have to make music together." Finish it she did, but after getting it back from her editor in June of 2021, she said, "The novel did fall victim to chemo brain fog here and there throughout, and I have been busy plugging the holes." As her cancer (she called it Henry) started winning the war she'd waged against it, and her responses to my texts were less frequent. The last I had from her was about a month before she passed in September, 2021. Her husband, Dick, knew Leila wanted this book to get published and worked hard with Leila's agent to get it revised & edited, placed with a new publisher, and it will finally be out in the world three years later. Praise be.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  A seemingly perfect suburban housewife is being pursued by a private detective . . . and hunted by a murderer in this riveting, much-anticipated posthumous novel from the beloved author of Roses and Dragonfly.

Kathryn Walker enjoys an enviable life. Her husband is an accomplished doctor, her children are bright and successful, and she devotes herself to charity work that uplifts her Suburban Colorado community. Settling into a new year, her life couldn’t be better. . .

Until April.

For Kathryn, April has always rained trouble—but this time may be even stormier than the fraught past she’s trying to overcome. Already distraught over the child she miscarried in this same cursed month many years ago, the emotionally fragile woman isn’t ready to consider the overwhelming evidence that someone may be trying to take her husband—and her life.

Featuring the complex characters and powerful storytelling that are the beloved hallmarks of Leila Meacham’s novels beginning with her breakout debut Roses, April Storm is a page-turning triumph that caps a remarkable literary career.

MY BOOK REVIEW

HALL WAYS ARC REVIEW: I am thrilled that this novel, which the author was revising when she passed away in 2021, was finished and will be published posthumously. I'm grateful to her husband for seeing it through and to the publisher for giving readers a last hurrah with sweet Leila Meacham's storytelling prowess.

APRIL STORM is a good story with some unexpected turns, and I read it in one sitting.  Women will likely connect with main character Kathryn in one way or another, whether it's in her years-old or newest grief, the sadness of a lost career or children leaving the nest, or the way relationships change --or stay the same -- over time.

I read an ARC provided by the publisher, and I expect the scattered typos I saw will be caught and corrected. I hope so because clean and superbly edited final books have always been a mark of Leila's books (and one that this word nerd appreciates).

Fans of Leila's prior works will feel her absence in the writing. I can't put my finger on exactly what's missing -- perhaps the emotional depth usually present in her characters? I've never read one of her books that didn't wreck me in some way and have me in tears of joy or sorrow at least once. I was not even close in APRIL STORM, though I definitely wanted to grab a character or two by the shoulders and shake them into reason.

Even so, I'd recommend it for those looking for a not-so-heavy and thoroughly entertaining thriller. And I'm okay with not being wrecked and even wonder if perhaps that was Leila's final gift to her readers.

HALL WAYS BONUS REVIEW:
Final score: the book wins 57 to 43. Time to expand my local horizons.

100 Things to Do in Dallas-Fort Worth Before You Die is a fabulous guidebook that gives concise but informative overviews of one hundred plus places and activities in the DFW Metroplex. By the way, the DFW Metroplex, I learned, is a 9,286 square MILES area! Wow! Author Tui Snider's travel writing skills are on point as she shares the places and tidbits about each that make north Texas so unique.

As a Fort Worth, Texas-born gal, I was raised in a family where my momma was always seeking-out and taking us to the cool, off-the-beaten-track places and festivals. Even with that upbringing and the majority of my fifty plus years lived in DFW, I found over half the one hundred places in the books are sights and activities (57 of them, to be exact) I have never experienced -- and a bunch I had never even heard of!

An awesome aspect to 100 Things is that it really is an excellent resource for locals to not only have on hand for visitors but to use as a source for new ideas and a lot of reminiscing.  Some of my favorite childhood memories and restaurant experiences were made at places mentioned in the book (like Burger's Lake Fossil Rim, and the National Cowgirl Museum, and Bonnell's, Ol' South Pancake House and Edelweiss). After reading 100 Things, I realize that I am a creature of habit with the local activities I enjoy: for example, Grapevine does not have the only wine trail; Fort Worth does not have the only ghost tour. I plan on getting a bunch of copies of this guide for my local friends and family to enjoy.

The “Hundred Things” is actually well over a hundred because of the glorious sub-lists in many sections. Plus, there are lots of extra cultural details, statistics, and tidbits thrown in that add an extra layer of interest. Again, much of what’s included is new information to me that reinforces DFW has some of the biggest and best events in the US.  The organization of the book, which includes a divided table of contents, index, suggested itineraries, and activities by season, and website addresses really helps users find what they need for quick reference.  Especially helpful are the "Free Family Fun" and "Rainy Day Fun" lists.  Also included in the book are interesting photos sprinkled throughout the book that add interest, though they are not clearly labeled. I am okay with the small selection of photos and that they are black and white since the purpose and focus of 100 Things is informational.

The book is well-edited, the writing is clear and friendly, and the generous white space and formatting make it very user friendly and easy to read (as opposed to other guides that pack too much on a single page with teeny-tiny print). There are a few places where it seems like there are no spaces between words, and this Grammar Policewoman issues only a few citations for some misspelled words and comma issues. (Though the Neiman Marcus police might have a full warrant for arrest out!) Snider gets an Award of Excellence for being on Team Oxford Comma, which counters any punctuation pitfalls. The issues are all minor and none detracts from the overall fabulousness of this book.  I can't wait to plan a staycation to include some new excursions and also to re-visit some old favorites around my own stomping grounds.

I subscribe to Tui Snider's newsletter (you should to) and answered the author's call a while back when she asked for suggestions of places to include in the book. What a surprise to find I am mentioned in the acknowledgments! I am excited and honored -- just like I was to finally meet the author at the AME Book Fest in July. When I was there, I bought another copy of her book Understanding Cemetery Symbols and arranged for my gorgeous signed print copy of 100 Things to be sent when it was hot off the presses. There were no strings attached, and my bonus review, shared via Lone Star Book Blog Tours, is my honest opinion -- the only kind I give.

Planning my staycation while on vacation!

Harmon General Cover Reveal Blitz!

HARMON GENERAL
Misfits and Millionaires #2
by
KIMBERLY FISH
Genre: Historical Fiction / WWII / Spies
Expected Date of Publication: June 16, 2018
Number of Pages: 330

ABOUT THE BOOK: Harmon General is book two in the WWII historical fiction series entitled Misfits and Millionaires—set in Longview, Texas. The novel picks up about two months after the story line in The Big Inch ended.

Familiar characters and locations get a shot of adrenaline from the biological hazard espionage going on at the U.S. Army’s new medical hospital treating diseased and wounded soldiers—a 156-acre pop campus created as part of a master plan to place U.S. Army hospitals around Texas specializing in long-term wound care for WWII soldiers. The Office of Strategic Services has one of its best agents in place as a nurse at Harmon General—Sgt. Emmie Tesco—and she’s soon up to her blood pressure cuff in intrigues at the hospital campus, particularly the mission to stop a culprit code-named “Dr. Death” who is accused of skewing the malaria test protocols being established at Harmon so that no one will notice him preparing to sell the malaria research to the enemies of the Allies. Heroes and villains circulate in Longview from the post at Harmon General, and Emmie ropes Lane Mercer into helping manage the overload of responsibilities. Readers of The Big Inch will better understand what drives Emmie Tesco and why poking at old wounds can be a messy affair. The backstory of Lane Mercer and her first husband gets a brutal airing too, and stakes grow dangerous for Lane and Zeke Hayes as the plans they’d wanted for their wedding are upended by well-meaning, Aunt Edith.

PRESENTING THE COVER
OF HARMON GENERAL

PRAISE FOR HARMON GENERAL:
"The war that changed the world brought the world to East Texas through Harmon General, a significant US Army hospital that treated thousands of wounded soldiers in Longview.  In Harmon General, we meet again Lane Mercer, a World War II heroine, and we enjoy again how the drama of her secret service to the nation and her complicated personal relationships pull us into the vast impact of the world war." -- Dale Lunsford, Ph.D., President, LeTourneau University

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kimberly Fish started writing professionally with the birth of her second child and the purchase of a home computer. Having found this dubious outlet, she then entered and won The Writer’s League of Texas manuscript contest which fed her on-going fascination with story crafting.

She has since published in magazines, newspapers, and online formats and in January 2017, released the first novel in the Misfits and Millionaires series set during the World War II years in Longview, Texas—The Big Inch. Her second book, Comfort Plans, was published later that same year.

She lives with her family in East Texas.

Genre: True Crime
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing / The History Press

Date of Publication: April 2, 2018
Number of Pages: 192 pages, 30 b&w images

Jennie May Walker Burleson was envied for having everything a woman of her time could want—the privileged upbringing, the dazzling good looks, the dashing war hero husband. She was admired for demonstrating that a woman could want more, from the front of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession to the bottom of a Mesoamerican archaeological dig. But as she stood over the body of her husband’s second wife, gun in hand, society’s envy and admiration quickly hardened into pity and scorn. T. Felder Dorn examines the complicated trajectory of her life as socialite, suffragist and shooter.
