FROM THE STORIES-WORTH-WAITING-FOR PILE. Leila Meacham came into my world in February, 2019, shortly after I took ownership of Lone Star Literary Life -- and she brought so much joy to my life. Not only was she one of the most talented writers (and finished her first book at age 65!), she was one of the highest-caliber humans I've known. Our friendship over the years was precious to me, and even as her own health was failing, she would text me uplifting and optimistic messages of love and support, and her faith never wavered. She gave so much credit to LSLL for the success of Dragonflyand I feel like she did me the favor by choosing to work with us.  She first mentioned April Storm to me in September of 2020, and she was bound and determined to finish it and told me in November of that year: "You and I have continued business to do...we still have to make music together." Finish it she did, but after getting it back from her editor in June of 2021, she said, "The novel did fall victim to chemo brain fog here and there throughout, and I have been busy plugging the holes." As her cancer (she called it Henry) started winning the war she'd waged against it, and her responses to my texts were less frequent. The last I had from her was about a month before she passed in September, 2021. Her husband, Dick, knew Leila wanted this book to get published and worked hard with Leila's agent to get it revised & edited, placed with a new publisher, and it will finally be out in the world three years later. Praise be.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  A seemingly perfect suburban housewife is being pursued by a private detective . . . and hunted by a murderer in this riveting, much-anticipated posthumous novel from the beloved author of Roses and Dragonfly.

Kathryn Walker enjoys an enviable life. Her husband is an accomplished doctor, her children are bright and successful, and she devotes herself to charity work that uplifts her Suburban Colorado community. Settling into a new year, her life couldn’t be better. . .

Until April.

For Kathryn, April has always rained trouble—but this time may be even stormier than the fraught past she’s trying to overcome. Already distraught over the child she miscarried in this same cursed month many years ago, the emotionally fragile woman isn’t ready to consider the overwhelming evidence that someone may be trying to take her husband—and her life.

Featuring the complex characters and powerful storytelling that are the beloved hallmarks of Leila Meacham’s novels beginning with her breakout debut Roses, April Storm is a page-turning triumph that caps a remarkable literary career.

MY BOOK REVIEW

HALL WAYS ARC REVIEW: I am thrilled that this novel, which the author was revising when she passed away in 2021, was finished and will be published posthumously. I'm grateful to her husband for seeing it through and to the publisher for giving readers a last hurrah with sweet Leila Meacham's storytelling prowess.

APRIL STORM is a good story with some unexpected turns, and I read it in one sitting.  Women will likely connect with main character Kathryn in one way or another, whether it's in her years-old or newest grief, the sadness of a lost career or children leaving the nest, or the way relationships change --or stay the same -- over time.

I read an ARC provided by the publisher, and I expect the scattered typos I saw will be caught and corrected. I hope so because clean and superbly edited final books have always been a mark of Leila's books (and one that this word nerd appreciates).

Fans of Leila's prior works will feel her absence in the writing. I can't put my finger on exactly what's missing -- perhaps the emotional depth usually present in her characters? I've never read one of her books that didn't wreck me in some way and have me in tears of joy or sorrow at least once. I was not even close in APRIL STORM, though I definitely wanted to grab a character or two by the shoulders and shake them into reason.

Even so, I'd recommend it for those looking for a not-so-heavy and thoroughly entertaining thriller. And I'm okay with not being wrecked and even wonder if perhaps that was Leila's final gift to her readers.

CHAPTER 3, PART ONE
FROM BURDEN OF PROOF
BY DiANN MILLS

April Ramos’s stomach rumbled, and her fridge at home looked like she’d hung a Vacancy sign on it. Donuts were the last thing she needed after this morning’s negotiation gone wrong—as though filling her body with sugar and grease might reduce the overwhelming guilt—but her car still swung into the busy parking lot of a popular donut shop a few blocks from her home in Houston.

How sad she also looked for something sweet to soothe the ache of loneliness. The idea of calling someone special, sharing her miserable past hours, and doing the same for him tugged on her heartstrings. Maybe her future held the possibility, but right now no one stood backstage, waving.

A slight chill blew in from the north, and she grabbed her FBI jacket from the backseat, slipping it over her blouse. Inside the shop, she took a place in line behind four other customers.

What drove a man to give up on himself and life? Benson had invited her onto the roof with him . . . so she could watch him commit suicide? For a while, she believed she’d gained his trust. Then an absent wallet destroyed his confidence and hers.

A young woman behind her scolded a crying baby. “I told you to hush. All this way, you’ve whined and screamed. I’m hungry, so deal with it. Should have left you alongside the road.”

The insensitive words irritated April, especially on the heels of the earlier incident. Loving mothers treated their children with tenderness, not like they were liabilities. They protected them from a world that was often harsh. April turned to the young woman who held the crying baby in pink pajamas. Tears stained the child’s cheeks, and mucus flowed over her lips.

“Are you a real FBI agent?” The mother looked to be in her early twenties, long ponytail, taller than average.

“Yes.”

The young woman shoved the baby into April’s arms. “Take her for a few minutes, please. I need to breathe.”

April attempted to return the baby, but the mother stepped back. “She’s making me crazy.”

“I see you’re upset. We can talk.” April patted the baby’s back, but the child only cried louder.

“I’m done with her.” The young woman rushed toward the entrance and disappeared into a mass of parked vehicles.

“Hey—” What just happened? April held the baby close to comfort her and detected a dirty diaper. She was shivering too. Shrugging off her jacket, April stepped out of line to wrap the baby—who wailed louder than before.

The mother might have gone to her car for a diaper bag.

Seven minutes ticked by. April pushed through the entrance of the shop into the cold November air, cradling the crying baby girl. At least the jacket kept her warm. April scanned the parking lot and walked to the rear. The young woman had disappeared.

“Well, little one, looks like it’s just you and me,” she whispered and walked toward the front of the shop with the intention of calling Child Protective Services. “Wish I knew how to ease your tears.”
A man jogged her way. “Stop! You have my daughter.”

What had she been hit with now? April sized him up for a potential struggle. Trim build. Wore a brown leather jacket and a cap pulled down over his forehead. And a distinct frown.

“Why did you kidnap my daughter?” Despite the cool air, sweat beaded his brow. Before April could respond, the baby whirled to him with open arms. “Isabella, Daddy’s here for you.” He attempted to take the baby, but April stepped back.

When Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal visits Houston to seek cancer treatment for his mother, an attempt on his life puts all agencies on high alert. FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson is the lead on the prince’s protective detail because of their long-standing friendship, but he’s surprised—and none too happy—when the CIA brings one of their operatives, Monica Alden, in on the task force after the assassination attempt.
Kord and Monica must quickly put aside interagency squabbles, however, when they learn the prince has additional motives for his visit—plans to promote stronger ties with the US and encourage economic growth and westernization in his own country. Plans that could easily incite a number of suspects both in the US and in countries hostile to Saudi Arabia. Worse yet, the would-be assassin always seems to be one step ahead of them, implicating someone close to the prince—or the investigation. But who would be willing to commit high treason, and can Kord and Monica stop them in time?

“Compelling characters and a riveting plot that fits seamlessly with current events make this novel impossible to put down. Readers can count on being glued to the pages late into the night – as “just one more chapter” turns into “can’t stop now.”” – RT Book Reviews

CHAPTER 1: PART 1: HIGH TREASON
By DiAnn Mills

FBI SPECIAL AGENT KORD DAVIDSON had survived missions in the Middle East, been detained in Iran, escaped an ISIS death trap, and still walked and talked. His past kept him fueled for the future while adrenaline flowed whenever he recalled the danger—and the victories of working Houston’s terrorist division.
Early Tuesday morning, Kord sat in a Mercedes limo with Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal, his longtime friend and a grandson of the royal Saud family, en route to the Saud mansion in River Oaks. The prince’s mother, Princess Gharam, and his two sisters rode in a limo behind them. Prince Omar had requested Kord for protection detail as an olive branch to the Americans. Smart move, in Kord’s opinion. The strained relations between Saudi Arabia and the US resulting from falling oil prices and the US having less dependency on foreign oil was only part of the problem. Despite being a strong ally to the West in the fight against terrorism, the Saudis disapproved of how the US was handling the ongoing tension in Iran, Syria, and Yemen, and the list went on.
Kord shook off those bleak thoughts and turned his attention to the security detail. “I’m looking forward to catching up with your family,” he said to the prince. “I appreciate the e-mails with your sons’ photos, but I want to know all about them from their father.”
Prince Omar grinned like a boy himself. “They study hard and work even harder at mischief. You and I will have hours of coffee and conversation.” His expression shifted to lines that aged him. “I wish the circumstances regarding my mother were more pleasant.”
“MD Anderson is the best medical center in the world to help her.”
“And Houston has the only facility conducting a clinical trial for her type of cancer. I keep telling myself she’ll be fine, trying to be hopeful. I have an appointment with her team of doctors after she’s admitted to the hospital this afternoon. They want to review the testing from her doctor in Riyadh and explain their proposed method of treatment.” He paused. “I’m glad you’re with me. In case Mother’s treatments aren’t successful, I’ll need a friend.”
“Princess Gharam’s a strong woman.”
“She’s determined to fight the cancer.”
“I see your business plans aren’t on the schedule.”
Prince Omar turned to him. “I’ll give you that once I know about Mother’s treatment.”
“My job is to ensure your safety.”
“We’ll discuss it later. On Wednesday week, I’d like for you to accompany me to Saudi Aramco.”
He responded respectfully. How many of those at the family business were supportive of Prince Omar’s plans to lease ownership in Saudi oil reserves to Americans?
Prince Omar tapped his driver on the shoulder. “Wasi, don’t forget we’re stopping at the Frozen Rock.”
“A little early for ice cream,” Kord said.
“Not on Riyadh time.”
The prince’s press secretary, Malik, laughed. “Prince Omar, I reserved the shop for 9 a.m. before we left home.”
The moment the limos pulled off Westheimer into the busy shopping strip housing the Frozen Rock, uneasiness crept over Kord. A sensation he couldn’t shake and one he’d learned to trust. He scoured the area looking for potential danger. “Prince Omar, I don’t think we should do this.”
“This is one of Mother’s favorite excursions, and my sisters enjoy it too.”
He glanced at his friend. “Zain and I can take orders and deliver them. My gut tells me this isn’t safe, and I can’t give you a solid reason why.”
“I know your gut talk,” Zain, the head Saudi bodyguard, said. “Kept us from getting killed a couple of times.”
Prince Omar sighed heavily. “We have eight armed men. This is a go.”
