Helicopter parents. Control freaks. Perfectionists. Intolerants. Over-consumers. Social media junkies. We all fit in there somewhere. Read one woman’s stories of clinging, turning loose, and becoming free.

We are overly busy helicopter parents, control freaks, perfectionists, intolerants, over-consumers and social media junkies--who worry, fear, laugh less, and always want more. In the midst of it, we wonder what it would feel like to open our hands and turn loose of all of it.

In HOLDING ON LOOSELY: Opening My Hands, Lightening My Load, and Seeing Something Else, author Dana Knox Wright tells stories of one who is hardwired to cling.  To her children when they asked for a blessing to go.  To someone else’s ideas, when she didn’t trust her own. She held on to prejudice when she would tell you she didn’t. She shut down for days while clinging to fear. She clung to youthfulness as if what would come next couldn’t be her life’s cherry on top.

In a particular season of her life, she recognized her bent to possess, to keep, to hold tightly, and to control was completely contrary to Jesus’ example. This is one woman’s history of holding on and her stories of turning loose--stories of the gentle and firm, humorous and heartbreaking ways God led her to turn loose.  It is living minimally from the inside out.

Dana Knox Wright’s Inspiration Scrapbook

I’m a very visual person and when I’m writing, I’m also photographing.  I don’t do it intentionally, but it always happens this way for me.  I think photographs help me find the words I need. They call out an emotional response in me and it is from that place I write the story. These photos, to most everyone I’m guessing, appear to be the run-of-the-mill sort.  When I see them, though, I see the “turning loose” that was happening just beneath the apparent in every one of them. That, in a nutshell, is my book.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK REVIEW

“I’m hardwired to cling… sometimes I held more tightly to things I had than the faith I had.”

“Mothering is a hard habit to break.”

“I was sad because they didn’t seem quite as sad as I was.”

"The Comfort Zone was never meant to be my permanent place; it was meant to be my charging station."

“My best day is someone else’s worst day.”

Dana Knox Wright's HOLDING ON LOOSELY wins for best quotables; I filled a page with them! From the author's childhood adoration of Donny Osmond to her mother turning to tend a garden (when she couldn't 'mother' any more) to the realization that the only reason you're invited to dinner with your young adult kids may be to pick up the tab, I found myself nodding in agreement from page one.

Those of us who've seen a few decades come and go and have raised a few kids will relate to all the observations and stories of parenting, but there are plenty of other chapters and stories to love -- and every single one of them will force some introspection and reflection.

Wright opens herself almost completely to readers -- but not completely -- and I think that's good. It's not a tell-all, but it's a tell-a-whole-lot that is real and relatable. I listened to the audio book, and the author does an amazing job with nary a glitch or hiccup. Pacing was great, and it felt intimate hearing her tell her own stories. I enjoyed that I could just listen to a chapter and let it sink in before continuing. I plan on buying it in print so I can tab my favorite chapters (Edith and her flamingoes & old people kissing, to name two), and then buying a couple more for gifting. My guess is that most who read it will feel it's timely and eerily similar to parts of their own lives.

Highly recommend.

Dana Knox Wright began letting go of fear at fifty.  It’s the decade where, in an odd twist, Sandra Bullock asked for her autograph—the decade she began hiking to places with seriously wild animals, rafting in crazy rivers and eating wild blackberries with only mild concern rabid foxes eat from the plants, too. After a long career in radio voiceover, she found a passion for spreading goodness and living to the full. She has offered readers encouragement, hope and sisterhood for almost ten years through her essays published on her blog. Dana holds a degree in Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin and is the author of Saving Stories: Afternoons with Darrell (2017). She is the mother of three adult children and three grandchildren and currently lives in a small river town in the Texas Hill Country with her husband and an English Mastiff named Pearl.

From the author of the award-winning book A Delightful Little Book on Aging comes a new self-help memoir Creatrix Rising: Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. In her new book, Stephanie Raffelock liberates mold-defying midlife women, tired of the oft-inaccurate characterization of the “old crone,” to amplify the resounding strength within.

Ever since Eve was banned from the garden, women have endured the oftentimes painful and inaccurate definitions foisted upon them by the patriarchy. Maiden, mother, and crone, representing the three stages assigned to a woman’s life cycle, have been the limiting categories of both ancient and modern (neo-pagan) mythology. And one label in particular rankles: crone. The word conjures a wizened hag—useless for the most part, marginalized by appearance and ability.

None of us has ever truly fit the old-crone image, and for today’s midlife women, a new archetype is being birthed: the Creatrix.

In Creatrix Rising, Raffelock lays out—through personal stories and essays—the highlights of the past fifty years, in which women have gone from a quiet strength to a resounding voice. She invites us along on her own transformational journey by providing probing questions for reflection so that we can flesh out and bring to life this new archetype within ourselves. If what the Dalai Lama has predicted—that women will save the world—proves true, then the Creatrix will for certain be out front, leading the pack.

PRAISE FOR CREATRIX RISING:

“The perfect topic at the perfect time, Stephanie Raffelock’s self-help memoir, Creatrix Rising, identifies a new archetype, the Creatrix, that transcends the old archetype of Crone. Her stories and insights about how far women have come is nothing short of inspirational. A must-read for any woman who wants to embrace the strength and creativity of midlife.” -Marci Shimoff, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Happy for No Reason and Chicken Soup for the Women’s Soul

“Poetic and philosophical, Creatrix Rising will inspire readers to claim the courage and confidence that already lives inside of them. An intimate story of transformation, of journeying through life on your own terms without apology.”
-Richard Blanco, 2013 Presidential Inaugural Poet and author of How to Love a Country

“The new archetype Stephanie Raffelock assigns to midlife women underscores the assets and wisdom older women bring to our culture and to the greater good. Creatrix Rising is an affirmation and celebration of the feminine story taking place in leadership and creativity throughout our country.”
-Gabby Reese, volleyball legend, Nike’s first female spokeswoman, and New York Times best-selling author

HALL WAYS MINI-REVIEW:

"We weave together tales of our past and present, helping us make sense of the ideal we strive for: the freedom to do life on our own terms."

Reading Stephanie Raffelock's book -- part memoir, part call to action -- was so powerful and empowering. Her fascinating life stories, and how she learned and grew from them, force the reader to reflect upon her own life stories and the people who helped mold her into what she is today. Raffelock reminds us that we can break those molds at any time or stretch them to fit who we want to be.  But more importantly, Raffelock shows how women all have the potential to evolve and take their rightful places in the world by throwing out the horrible accepted norms and definitions of mid-life women.

I'm past the mid-life point, and Raffelock's pointed (and more subtle) questions she poses for self-reflection are ones I will keep revisiting as I continue to reinvent myself and grow.

Highly recommend CREATRIX RISING for ages 40+ women -- and for the men who are in their lives.

All around us, older women flourish in industry, entertainment, and politics. Do they know something that we don’t, or are we all just trying to figure it out? For so many of us, our hearts and minds still feel that we are twenty-something young women who can take on the world. But in our bodies, the flexibility and strength that were once taken for granted are far from how we remember them. Every day we have to rise above the creaky joints and achy knees to earn the opportunity of moving through the world with a modicum of grace.

Yet we do rise, because it’s a privilege to grow old, and every single day is a gift. Peter Pan’s mantra was, “Never grow up”; our collective mantra should be, “Never stop growing.” This collection of user-friendly stories, essays, and philosophies invites readers to celebrate whatever age they are with a sense of joy and purpose and with a spirit of gratitude.

PRAISE for A Delightful Little Book on Aging:
“Where are the elders? The wise women, the crones, the guardians of truth here to gently, lovingly, and playfully guide us towards the fulfillment of our collective destiny? It turns out that they are right here, in our midst, and Stephanie Raffelock is showcasing the reclamation of aging as a moment of becoming, no longer a dreaded withering into insignificance. A Delightful Little Book on Aging lays down new and beautiful tracks for the journey into our richest, deepest, and wildest years.” – Kelly Brogan, MD, author of the New York Times bestseller A Mind of Your Own

“A helpful, uplifting work for readers handling the challenges of growing older.” – Kirkus Reviews

HALL WAYS REVIEW: AUDIO BOOK / PRINT COMBO. Love, love, LOVE this little book that packs a big punch by putting aging into a positive, but realistic and new perspective. Stephanie Raffelock is both an excellent writer and narrator, and her book, A DELIGHTFUL LITTLE BOOK ON AGING, is just that. DE-LIGHT-FUL! I went into reading it with the expectation that many of the messages would be ones I already have heard -- been there, done that, you know, since I am several years past the 50 mark. Two pages into the prologue, I was already giggling and flagging quotes. Raffelock gets it and has plenty of pieces of advice that were new, but also a few already known and just in need of reinforcement.

Is this book inspirational? Absolutely. But Raffelock is no Pollyanna.  When she said, "I'd like to kick the whole "positive only" movement in its little ass," I knew I had found one of my tribe. She reminds us that not only is it unrealistic, but it's unnatural to always be positive. To be authentic is to allow some transparency and acknowledge all the feelings: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

“I learned quickly that I had to choose carefully what I invested in because I cannot do it all.”

Raffelock's words and experiences are thought provoking and readers need to let them soak in before moving on to the next section. Hearing her narrate her own stories and share her observations made them even more powerful. She is believable and lovable, and my guess is she is like Velcro in attracting friends. I know I want to sit around and shoot the bull with her.

A DELIGHTFUL LITTLE BOOK ON AGING is best consumed in delicious chunks to be savored and mulled over; the audio is the same. There's too much good information to listen straight through (though I did – you kinda can’t help it). But I will be revisiting both book and audio, a little at a time, for a quick fix when I need it. Raffelock reminds us of the perks that are easily overlooked when we are caught up with the numbers -- and she's good for a giggle.

I HIGHLY recommend A DELIGHTFUL LITTLE BOOK ON AGING for women in their mid-forties and older who are looking for laughs and a fresh outlook on aging.

Enduring and Triumphing Over OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
by JAMES S. JULIANA

Genre:  Adult NonFiction (18+), 176 pages

Categories: Self-Help, Mental Health
Publisher: Self-Published
Release dates: October 2019

Content Rating: PG. This self-help book deals with adult subject matter of mental illness.

Book Description:

Are you one of the millions who reside within a secret life, a life which constantly feels out of your own control: Are you plagued by repetitive thoughts and/or actions which interfere with your daily activities? The author lived for more than 40 years with an undiagnosed form of mental

illness, a phobia now known as OCD: obsessive-compulsive disorder. His emotional pain and suffering were at times almost unmanageable. In his mid-sixties, the author, a loving husband, father and accomplished high school teacher and athletic coach, discovered a unique psychologist

within the Denver therapeutic community who utilizes a radical but highly successful treatment that's allowed the author to control his OCD symptoms almost 100%. A Secret Life is one of the few books written by an OCD sufferer and descries in detail the pain and chaos living with this illness can cause not just the victim, but those closest to him.

This story doesn't stop there, but provides readers with options and advice dealing with OCD from someone who broke the curse of living a secret life. Now he's ready to share his story in order to help others.

"Which would I choose --
helping people with OCD or coaching football?"
Guest Post by Jim Juliana:
Participation in sports has been an integral component of my life since I was a child. I love the competition, the physicality and the joy of success which sports provide. I also enjoy the camaraderie of team sports. Throughout my career as a classroom teacher, I have been a head varsity coach in four different sports. Coaching sports has been my life.

However, since overcoming the symptoms of my OCD four years ago, and being able to live a normal daily life; enjoying my wife, children, grandchildren and friends, today I think I would choose being an effective spokesperson on behalf of those suffering with OCD, rather than being a successful head football coach at the high school level. Assisting other people with OCD to learn to live happy and productive lives, despite having OCD myself, seems to me to be more important and meaningful.

Meet the Author:
Jim Juliana was a hard-working family man with a devoted wife and adoring children. As a teacher, he taught numerous subjects over a 28-year career, was an assistant principal/athletic director for three years and mentored generations of youngsters in the classroom and in athletics. Juliana was a coach for forty years at the high school level.

Coach Juliana has been a part of two state championship teams, a city championship team and several league title teams. He spent two years as a college instructor and football coach. But Jim Juliana had a secret life, one over which he had no control. For most of his life, he also fought - and eventually defeated - an embarrassing and almost debilitating OCD. OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that affects three to five million adults in the US each year.

OCD involves irrational fears or repeated thoughts or obsessions that drive an individual to engage in repetitive behaviors or compulsions. Jim Juliana's life was finally changed when he found a therapist whose treatment all but eliminated his OCD incidents. A Secret Life chronicles Juliana's battle against his OCD and gives readers options and information for treatment based on his experiences.
