About Abigail Keam

Abigail Keam is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author who writes the Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series about a Southern female beekeeper turned amateur sleuth living in the glamorous world of oak-cured bourbon, antebellum mansions, and thoroughbred farms.

Besides loving history, Kentucky bourbon and chocolate, Abigail loves honeybees and for many years made her living by selling honey at a farmers’ market like her protagonist, Josiah Reynolds. She is an award-winning beekeeper who has won many honey awards at the Kentucky State Fair including the Barbara Horn Award, which is given to beekeepers who rate a perfect 100 in a honey competition.

Miss Abigail has taken her knowledge of beekeeping to create a fictional beekeeping protagonist, Josiah Reynolds, who solves murder mysteries in the Bluegrass. While Miss Abigail’s novels are for enjoyment, she discusses the importance of a local sustainable food economy and land management for honeybees and other creatures.

She currently lives on the Kentucky River in a metal house with her husband and various critters. She still has honeybees.

In a beautiful mountain community near Asheville, North Carolina, caterer and personal chef Allie Catt serves up mouthwatering, literary-themed dinner parties inspired by her clients’ favorite books. Her next event is sure to be a roaring success—if a murderer isn’t a killjoy.

If it were true that the best thing a girl can be in this world is a fool, then Allie Catt would be out of luck. Fortunately, Allie’s business is a smashing success. And following her Pride and Prejudice event, grander plans await.

Feast for the Eyes bookstore manager and Allie’s best friend, Tegan, is hosting a book club soirée and wants it to be a glittering affair based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic Jazz Age-set novel, The Great Gatsby. Soon, art deco table settings and visions of flappers are dancing the Charleston in their heads. Even Tegan’s prickly sister, Vanna, is on board. And surely, Allie’s tuxedo cat, Darcy, thinks it’s the cat’s meow.

Amid the planning, charismatic developer Jason Gardner arrives in town to buy some historic buildings on Main Street. He, too, has plans: to create a modern mall. Allie is more than concerned. She even wants to protest. But when Jason invites her to cater a lavish party, she finds him surprisingly likable. Then she’s summoned to his estate for a meeting—and finds him dead.

Once again Allie’s landed in the middle of a crime scene. Worse, one of her earrings is later discovered near the body. And when police learn she was upset about the mall, she’s suspect number one. Allie’s blossoming sleuthing skills once cleared Tegan’s name, but can she save herself—before a killer writes her a not-so-great Gatsby-esque ending?

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Murder by the Millions is a mélange of culinary and literary delights served with a liberal portion of mystery. A bookish friend of mine recently introduced me to the term “potato chip mysteries,” and I think Murder by the Millions fits solidly in that category. You want to just keep reading in this world.

Though I think I’d have had an easier time had I started with the first book in Daryl Wood Gerber’s Literary Dining Mystery series, Murder by the Millions, the second installment, certainly stands alone. Part of my struggle was figuring out the ages and connections of many peripheral characters – and there are MANY peripheral characters. Happily, Gerber provides a “Cast of Characters” section at the beginning of the book, and I referenced it frequently (though two were notably absent from the list. Intentionally? Hmmm.)

Murder by the Millions builds up towards a big (and getting bigger by the minute) Gatsby-themed dinner, and starting each chapter, there’s a telling quote from The Great Gatsby.  I liked seeing similarities between that novel and the unfolding stories within Murder by the Millions. I was expecting that the party would be where the big reveal and turning point occur, but that is just one of the several guesses I had wrong in reading Murder by the Millions.

Author Daryl Wood Gerber provides a carefully researched and interesting history of not only the 1920s fashion, food, and flair, but the goings-on and architecture around Asheville, North Carolina, where Murder by the Millions is set. She excels at providing grand descriptions and using precise words to convey the scenes and attitudes of the characters, though admittedly, I had to look up a more than a few words to get their exact meanings. (Context clues are there, but inquiring minds want to know more!) I read an ARC of the book and expect any typos and errors I noticed will be cleaned up for the final version for purchase.

Regarding character diction, for some characters, the language and vocabulary didn’t seem authentic to the ages of the characters (says the mom of five quite intelligent children ranging from twenty-eight to thirty-five). Along the same lines, the situations of these twenty-somethings aren’t realistic but they’re certainly idyllic. But what better place than fiction to have so many young women owning successful small businesses and being homeowners, with no struggles in life other than personal ones (like dating and dead bodies)?  I’m all in for this kind of fanciful town (minus the murders, of course).

Foodies will enjoy the play-by-play of main character Allie making delectable dishes for her business, Dream Cuisine, and there’s an extensive list of recipes of said dishes at the end of Murder by the Millions. As someone who just wants to know what time it is and not how the watch works, these scenes aren’t very appealing -- though the menus sure are, and I can appreciate the effort that goes into them. Bookish people will enjoy the time in the bookstore Allie co-owns, Feast for the Eyes, with the behind-the-scenes peeks, the book talking, and the sprinkling of well-known titles. It’s clearly the community’s third space, as it should be in a perfect world.

“If Dream Cuisine continued to grow, I would have to curtail my time at Feast for the Eyes or give up reading.” – Allie Catt

As someone who’s been in a similar quandary to Allie’s and who found the only viable option to having time to read was to retire, I’m again happy that the universe of the Literary Dining Mystery series is a fictional one. In that world, I expect that Allie will find a way to balance two businesses, a needy cat, a budding romance, and the occasional untimely mysterious death. And readers will get to ride along for the fiction, food, and the neatly tied endings. Score!

Synopsis:

Forewarned by Tracey S. Phillips

For 15-year-old Daphne Ann Post, the summer of 1976 at Lake Carlson should be filled with new friendships and carefree late-night parties. But something darker lurks beneath the surface—her chilling premonition that someone is going to drown.

Wishing she could escape the shadow of her fractured family and her mother’s too-soon rebound relationship, Daphne reluctantly heads to the family lake house in northern Indiana. The tension with her mother is thick—especially when Daphne is the only one who knows her mom's boyfriend is hiding a dangerous secret. But Daphne’s burden is far heavier than family drama. She harbors an unsettling gift—an ability to know the hidden truths of anyone she touches.

Last year that same intuition failed her when her best friend ignored Daphne’s warning before a tragic accident. Now everyone at school blames Daphne for what happened. Haunted by guilt, Daphne is determined to keep her ability a secret.

When she meets the Vaughans—cool, popular, and effortlessly perfect next-door neighbors—Daphne is drawn into their world, seduced by the thrill of fitting in. Over the summer, whispers of danger from the lake grow louder. Her intuition screams someone will die, and not even the haze of weed can numb her fear.

The clock is ticking. Daphne knows that to save a life, she’ll have to confront her darkest secret and risk losing everything she’s worked so hard for. Can she stop the inevitable without exposing her truth? Or will the lake claim a victim—this time, someone she loves?

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above, and be aware that it's only representative of one aspect of the book. More on that below.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audiobook & eBook Review. Set in 1976, Forewarned places readers deep into what seems to be an idyllic Indiana lakeside summer getaway. But just a scratch at the surface, and it’s clear it’s far from ideal.  Several subplots keep us curious and engaged and anxiously awaiting for what’s promised in the book’s description.

“I can’t drink; quaaludes are the only things that stay down.”

More than anything, Forewarned is a coming-of-age story with a splash of paranormal. It’s a summer-long snapshot of the lives of messed-up and misguided teens and their dysfunctional families – and all the associated drama surrounding that. Forewarned is a juicy read that unfolds much like a daytime TV drama. Think of an HBO’d version of One Life to Live or As the World Turns but with profanity-slinging sexualized primary characters, ages fifteen to twenty-four years old, using and abusing drugs and alcohol. Like I said, juicy, right? Yet, that’s also what makes Forewarned one of these books that I struggle to blanket-recommend for young adults. (I’d categorize it as mature young adult / new adult and older.)

“Icy dread laced with a sense of danger crept up my arms.”

Author Tracey S. Phillips shines in writing descriptive and evocative scenes that make the reader feel the sense of time and place and mood. Though the issues and problems depicted sadly span the ages, the 1976 touches accurately remind readers that Forewarned is not a modern book. For those of us who grew up in the ‘70s, the blasts from the past bring sentimental smiles: the freedom of roaming around, needing a dime for a phone call, hanging out at the A&W, playing Ouija, listening to Casey Kasem on the radio, the introduction of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the country’s bicentennial celebration. For younger readers, the blasts from the past will likely be jaw-dropping and lead to Google searches and Amazon purchases.

In addition to crafting authentic depictions of scene, Phillips writes realistic characters to love and loathe (I’m talking to you, Tony. GRRR! ICKKK!). Though it seems like Forewarned will be Daphne’s story, there are just as many chapters told from Lara’s point of view, and a few from the oldest in this otherwise teen group, twenty-four-year-old Mark. Daphne is the most intriguing of characters and seems a bit of an old soul in how she speaks and thinks. For example, she says things like, it “warmed my buttocks,” which is odd-speak for a fifteen-year-old who hangs out with the fast kids. Yet, as she’s thinking through piano concertos, it also strangely fits. Add to this that Daphne has the gift of clairvoyance (which definitely takes a back seat to the kids-gone-wild plotline) and is riddled with anxiety and anger, she’s fascinating. Fascinating for entirely different reasons is Lara, and watching her make horrible choices and desperately needing attention and affection is like watching a trainwreck. The addition of Mark to the story allows the author to bring yet another subplot to the mix. Through it all, there’s an underlayer of dread that drags on readers as we just know none of this can turn out well.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: I intended to read Forewarned only with my ears because I love audiobooks, but those narrated by the author, like this one, usually have another layer of authenticity. My listening preference didn’t sync with the very slow, steady pace of narration, and I had a hard time finding the right speed to work. I ended up at 1.5x, which made the faster-talking teenagers sound even more natural. However, I discovered an audiobook glitch that left out a significant portion of the book, so I switched to the eBook. I did see a sprinkling of typos and errors in the eBook, which is distracting for me, so I went back and forth between formats, and I’m glad I did. For one, I think the author became more comfortable with her audiobook narration, and the caliber of her delivery was greatly improved and enjoyable by mid-point, making listening at 1.5x perfect. But also, had I just stuck with the eBook, I would have missed hearing the wonderful “End Credits” where the author herself performs Chopin's “Trois Nouvelles Études," No. 1! I slowed the listening speed back to 1x for that, and then the audiobook referenced a playlist, and that information sent me back to the eBook. There readers find the “Forewarned Soundtrack,” which ranges from Hall and Oates, The Who, and Steely Dan to Beethoven and Chopin. BONUS: The eBook has a hyperlink to an Amazon Music Playlist. Score! (See the preview below my review! 🠋🠋🠋)

Though the countdown to an eerie ending is slow in coming around, with just less than twenty percent left, the suspense really starts building and like flies on the wall, we can’t stop watching the stories unravel.  Some questions are answered and some situations are neatly or messily resolved, but there are also some loose threads hanging about, along with new information that could take Daphne’s life in a new direction. With Forewarned’s subtitle being “A Daphne Ann Post Novel,” I’m guessing there will be future installments where lingering questions are answered and new adventures await. I’ll be there for it.

I voluntarily reviewed this book and received a print ARC from the author through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

Book Description:

Death wasn’t the end.

More than two hundred and fifty years after the infamous Pendle Witch Trials, the spirits of rival witches Demdike and Chattox remain tethered to their bloodlines—watching, waiting, and bound by unfinished business.

Now, in the late eighteen hundreds, a pragmatic midwife and a troubled young psychic—descendants of the two witches—are drawn into a haunting legacy. An ancient being is stirring—an angry god of the old world, hungry for vengeance and ready to consume the future.

To stop it, the living and the dead must unite, recovering the lost knowledge of their craft. Whilst facing age-old problems and new foes. Some spirits don’t rest easy, and in Pendle, they’re clawing their way back from the past.

Interview with Author Kayleigh Kavanaugh

What genre do you write and why?
Fantasy, historical, and romance. Not necessarily in that order or combined. Because fantasy lets me escape; history fascinates me with the many secrets it hides; romance just makes the world feel like a more hopeful place.

There are many books out there about witches. What makes yours different?
I think that what makes me different is the way I approached the subject. These were women who were victims and purposely targeted for political agendas. I wanted to give them sympathy but to show they were also people—complex and complicated. There are a lot of stories locally about the witches still being around and haunting places. It made me think, “If they were still around, why? And what would they be sticking around for?” Dead witches with ties to the physical world and being guides to their families is definitely a less-explored aspect of the genre.

What made you write a book about the witches in this unusual way?
I really didn’t want to just cover the trials. I wanted what felt natural but could leave a more hopeful ending and possibility for more in the future. Being spirits and reincarnation seemed like a great solution to this problem.

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?
Not exactly. I never suffer from a lack of ideas. It’s usually I’m too ill to think straight or make anything coherent. However, I did hear a great piece of advice. If you are blocked, it’s because the reader in you doesn’t agree with the writer. You need to go a few pages/chapters back and look at your work as a consumer. What part are you rejecting? Rework it. Then it should help release the block.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?
When I was writing a lot a day, I demanded silence, using ear defenders and turning my internet off. Now, when I’m writing less and need to take regular breaks, I typically have music playing in the background. A cup of tea and a bottle of water next to me. There isn’t more than this, maybe asking people not to disturb me, but that's more wishful thinking on my part.

In today’s tech-savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?
The book I wrote in high school was all on paper. I burnt it years later…

Any hobbies?
I like making jewelry. My dexterity isn’t great, so I can’t do it as much or as often as I’d like, but I love giving my family little pieces I’ve made myself.
I love skincare and makeup.
I also regularly to do tea-leaf readings. Though I am also partial to the runes and tarot.

ABOUT THE BOOK: A hurricane is brewing, a deadly plague is spreading, and time isn’t what we think it is.

Ronnie Andrews knows he’s here. Jeffrey Brennan, the ex-boyfriend who has haunted her past, is lurking somewhere in the Puerto Rican hospital, waiting for his moment to strike. As bubonic plague fears sweep the island, the hospital descends into chaos—staff flee, Homeland Security locks down the facility, and a bioterror threat escalates. But Ronnie fears something even worse: that Jeffrey will use this moment of turmoil to send her hurtling through time once again.

The damage to her brain from previous time-travel events is already severe—one more jump could destroy her. But Jeffrey needs Ronnie and Mike gone before they expose his time travel device to the government.

Meanwhile, Mike—barely clinging to consciousness after a devastating mudslide crash—is about to be put into a medically induced coma. But he knows one thing: if he falls asleep, he may never wake up again. With time slipping through their fingers, can Ronnie and Mike stop Jeffrey before it's too late?

Fracturing Time is the adrenaline-pumping fourth book in the Stealing Time series, packed with high-stakes suspense, time travel twists, and heart-pounding action.

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Reading Fracturing Time is like watching a juggling act, where author KJ Waters keeps multiple characters, multiple timelines, and multiple settings orbiting around her main character, Ronnie, in this action-packed fourth book in the Stealing Time series.

Having not read any of the prior books in the series, I struggled a bit to understand the relationships and events that led up to Fracturing Time. Also, I imagine having been alongside the characters, living the moments with them from the get-go, would make a reader feel more connected and invested, and even repelled. Waters provides readers with a few good bring-to-dates and insights along the way, which helps. But, I won't recommend it as a stand-alone book. Instead, I recommend the series because you'll want to know all the delicious details, start to finish.

Stephanie McKay studied the threatening sky, bracing herself for Orlando’s daily summer ritual, those few hours when Mother Nature threw her tantrum.”

Waters’s own experiences living in Florida surely aided her in creating such accurate and realistic situations for readers to experience (vicariously, thank goodness). However, it’s clear the author has done copious amounts of research into historical events, law enforcement procedures, medical conditions, and of course, weather events.  Sometimes scenes went on a bit long and one seemed intentionally ghoulish to me, but they definitely illustrated the deep research.

The characters in Fracturing Time are fleshed out and are written so that we hear the lilt in Steph's and Ian's voices, the seething in Jeffery's, and the time stamp of 1752 in Appleton's, to name a few. This lends an extra level of authenticity to the characters and the intriguing, even outrageous subplots in which they are involved.

I read an ARC of Fracturing Time and found some editing issues, but I assume those have been cleaned up in the final version available for sale. For this new-to-the-series reader, some re-reading of passages was required to try to grasp what was happening, which is pretty mind blowing and imaginative; but it works. Plus, having scenes told from multiple viewpoints (including one from a highly-medicated character) gives us a better understanding of the bigger picture. BONUS: if like me you love when a cover and book title tie-in to the story, you'll be pleased.

In the “A Letter to My Readers” section at the end of the book, author KJ Waters says, “I’ve wrapped up the storyline in the fourth book in the series, but I have at least two others in the works. I’m also going to write some spin-offs.” Hooray! In Fracturing Time, there are definitely some set-ups for more books. While Waters is writing, I’ll backtrack to book one and read current to be ready for more adventures. Standing by!

BOOK REVIEW
I don't spend time on plot summary, so please read the book synopsis above.

HALL WAYS REVIEW: What a first chapter! From the very beginning, I was hooked on Death Grip and all it’s action-packed, page-turning fabulousness. I devoured this book, flipping digital pages so fast that my eReader may have overheated. I was so involved in the story that I barely took any notes; this says a lot about the writing. (And it’s also a nod to the outstanding editing. Bliss.) I didn’t want to get taken out of this story for even a minute.

Even though Death Grip is the fourth and final (?) installment in Travis Tougaw’s Marcotte and Collins Investigative Thrillers series, and it's the first book I've read in it, there is never a hiccup jumping in here. The characters’ relationships are established, but instead of being confusing, it makes the reader want to go back to their roots in prior installments.

Interestingly, I’ve recently read two other new releases with a Montana setting, like in Death Grip, and I’m wondering if it’s a trend. Whether it is or isn’t, I can see why authors would set a book there. I’ve never been, but Tougaw’s rich descriptions make the landscape’s beauty and perils pop from the pages. He’s also adept at writing realistic characters to love and loathe while also cleverly steering readers’ suspicions so that we’re on the fence about a character or two. Early on, my spider senses were tingling at the introduction of one person, and I wasn’t wrong in guessing that one was the baddie. But how the story unfolded, and the twisted mind and deeds of the perpetrator, had my spine tingling, too.

With the sharp writing, terrifically twisty plot, and excellent characterization found within the pages of Death Grip, readers need to prepare for an intense and wild ride that will likely lead them to binge reading the full series. *Says one of those readers.* Highly recommend.
